As businesses contend with rising costs, many workers face an erosion of health benefits next year, according to an annual survey released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust.
Forty percent of employers surveyed said they are likely to increase the amount their workers pay out of pocket for doctor visits. Almost as many said they are likely to raise annual deductibles and the amount workers pay for prescription drugs.
Nine percent said they plan to tighten eligibility for health benefits; 8 percent said they plan to drop coverage entirely. Forty-one percent of employers said they are "somewhat" or "very" likely to increase the amount employees pay in premiums -- though that would not necessarily mean employees would pay a higher percentage of the premiums. Employers could simply be passing along the same share of the overall increase that they are doing this year.
The authors of the study said the findings underscore the need for federal action to rein in costs.
The survey is one of several reports providing fresh ammunition to President Obama as he struggles to overhaul the nation's health-care system. One of his biggest challenges has been winning over Americans who are satisfied with their existing coverage.
A major business lobby weighed in Tuesday, saying that if current trends continue, annual health-care costs for employers will rise 166 percent over the next decade -- to $28,530 per employee.

Love these 5 year old reports masquerading as current events. Employers have been sleeping with the medical industry devils for at least 5 years. Just raising our copays and rates and sometimes cutting a break for the employer pay side. Back in 2003 or 04 I think, Kaiser tripled the employee subscription rate, held the company's rate flat.

Are you sure? I've heard mention that if your employer has an expensive crappy plan, like Wal Mart that you won't be able to refuse it and choose the public option. Let's look them over carefully before making any assumptions.

Unfortunately that is the case currently with most unions. My union is contracted by the company I work for to supply qualified crew members. I can not opt out my union sponsored medical/pharmaceutical plan for one that I chose, be it private or government subsidized.

once the reform comes out, there will be choices, so. if your current one is expensive, you'll just switch to another. and your current one will be forced to make it affordable.

I'm glad Obama is taking on healthcare reform. I like how he said, "I may not be the first president to take on healthcre, but I certainly am determined to be the last..."

They need a survey to discover health care costs are going up?
What's next, a survey to see if the sun is going to come up tomorrow?

Already people are spending huge amounts for health care.
Even people who retire from where I work, (and we have good benefits when compared to most other companies) are now taking part-time jobs, when they can find them, just to PAY for health care.
A couple in their early 60s paying over 800 bucks a month for coverage that is OK, but not that great.
And this insurance is cheap because so many members are in it!
Those that oppose single-payer are just don't get it. And further, I don't think they care. They got theirs, so to hell with everyone else. - 2 years ago

At least they think they've got theirs... when the road gets bumpy, they'll be lucky if their beloved insurance provider sticks with them to give them the 10% discount.

It's a coldhearted business run by middlemen who have no idea of how real people have to live. So when people start really taking over hospital emergency rooms and demanding their loved ones be cared for, then what?Just how far do they think they can push us before we start pushing back?

If nothing is done, and it looks like nothing effective is going to be done, the insurance companies will keep shifting the cost of care to the insured, so that the CEOs and Executives can increase their obscene salaries, bonuses and golden parachute plans.
Hey its a business and the goal is to make as much money as possible and supply the least product. This is the problem, it is for profit, and if we regulated it like SWitzerland, it would solve the issue without single payer.
But our corrupt Senators and Congress members are owned by the greedy insurance companies. So..................what is going to have to happen for real change? The people screaming about being anti-reform don't realize that if they are alive in 10 years they will regret their stance because they will be spending 50 percent of their income supporting the lifestyle of the insurance hierarchy. - 2 years ago

They are going to have to pass on the cost of health insurance to the workers. Some are going to stop health insurance entirely. People need to be aware of this and plan for it.
We need a decent public option not co-ops or a choice of crooked insurance companies. We need HR 676. Improved expanded Medicare. We better start fighting or we are going to be in deep shit with the plans they are talking about and they are going to force us to buy something. - 2 years ago

With the cost of insurance doubling every ten years or so it is hard to blame employers for this. How are they supposed to keep up? And how can any sane person stand against health care reform. I think some people just fear change and the unknown. They would rather ride this downward spiral right into the ground than try something new. I just wish I didn't have to go with them.

Chasingame, you make great points. I am a relatively center conservative. But, I still believe some sort of public option whatever that may be must become available. Otherwise, you will see less hirings, and less benefits for employees, due to the healthcare cost that are currently spiraling out of control.

I have been unemployed for months now, most of the interviews I have gone to have only been offering 18hrs a week ( not enough to live off of) or they are ON CALL positions, ON CALL for a receptionist job?? since when does that happen, no one can afford health care, and because of this they are hiring more employees but making sure they don't get enough hours to qualify for health benefits.. it's not all their fault though, it is mainly the evil insurance companies that keep raising their rates...just because they can.. they must be stopped...

Like it or not, change is coming. If you oppose health care reform, you support paying higher premiums year after year. These people who don't want to get screwed by the govt that they elect are happy to get screwed by insurers that they have no control over. I guess the questions are, how much money are you willing to pay to get screwed and how much control do you want over who is screwing you?

They will continue too raise your health care insurance bill, because they are mobsters, you want protection from the private sector good luck with that. If we get handed a bill that doesn't include a public option with it's own insurance plan that only has a 3% overhead, then I want it voted down. The Insurance company's are handing out 1.4 million dollars a day while this debate rages. Do you think they are scared?
