"Well, you know, kids sometimes don't always like what their parents want them to do," said Annette Hilt, the suspect's mother. "Everybody knows that."

There were nearly 50 other church members inside when the blaze took place.

    • This girl needs some hard time. Her mother needds some hard time. What kind of reason is "some kids don't like what their parents like?" Lack of parental oversight seems to be the case here.

Yes, I agree jail is definitely needed and for a long time. How dare she endanger the lives of fifty people, even one life is worth jail time.
Her mother's statement seems to be a way of the mother saying, "I completely do not endorse her dumb and nasty and mean and dangerous act." But she said it in a crude and uncivil way.

    • It's hard for me to believe there's no punishment for this girl. Making an effort to kill 50 people is a pretty serious offence IMO. I agree with MFT, no way would a boy have gotten away with this.........

    • I've heard of keeping the home fires lit....But church fires...that's a new one. Religions of all types are responsible for alot of horrors. Maybe this is a case of Karma running over their Dogma?

    • What is going on in our society?
"There were nearly 50 other church members inside when the blaze took place." and "The flames were about 4 feet high inside the chapel,"
But all we got was "Well, you know, kids sometimes don't always like what their parents want them to do," from this girl's mother. and "...the goal is to make sure that the girl receives counseling, not to necessarily punish her."
I bet if a 15 year old boy set a fire to a church because he is a devil worshiper he would be jailed!
Why do we accept this gross downplay?

    • The ironic thing is that the church is Mormon and knowing that she was probably forced into church I'm sure made her rebel against it. My cousins rebelled because their Dad was a Baptist minister, one was killed by police and the other has a drug addition.

    • What i wan't to know if they really loved satan or they just hated religion in general.

      There is a difference.

    • She needs to spend a day or two at a burn unit. then spend a few months in a juvanile detion center. Then a couple of years on probaion doing a two or three hundred hours of communaty servise. then she should go back before the court to exsplane her actions.

    • Depending on her age, whether or not she gets proper help, she will likely end up back in her LDS church with her family and they will take care of her for her actions.
Now if she gets treatment away from the church and is of age to make her own decisions she may be separated from her family and church.
The church she 'belongs' to (if since birth) keeps a limited amount of experiences away from the fold.(For good and bad reasons)
She is most likely at the age where she needs to have an individual identity and is acting out against the authority in her life. Because of these behaviors at the teenage level the Amish have a 'free' period for teens to 'sow their oats' so to speak so they don't feel 'stuck' in a lifestyle without 'world' or English' experiences.
I hope she gets the help she needs, she was screaming for it by her extreme actions. But I feel uncomfortable with the 'no punishment' or accountability for arson. The resulting no fatalities was lucky for her and the congregation.

    • I really think firstly that mentioning that she was a Satanist has more to do with making this story sensational than the crime itself. The fact is that regardless of her "faith" she committed felony arson and endangered the lives of many people.

On an unrelated note, saying you hate Christianity (or Judaism, or Islam, or...) by "worshipping" the devil is kind of like going to a convention and telling the Trekkies that you hate Star Trek... in Klingon.

Agreed, this whole Satan thing is a reactionary solipsism. She got a bone to pick with her church, so he latches on to Satanism and burns a church to demonstrate her hate and rage against the believers who she feels treated her as non-human. So she gave them a non-human response.
