Jan Helfeld interviews Senator Harry Reid about redistributive taxes. Reid maintains redistributive taxes are not a problem because people are not forced to pay taxes. He says taxation is voluntary…..this is not a joke.

    • Sure he's right. He probably doesn't pay taxes as Dashle didn't pay taxes. How about Charlie Rangel He probably doesn't have to pay taxes either. But I wonder just how this government can pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and still support 800 military facilities around the world and pay the CIA, The Pentagon and the defense department,The Federal Reserve Bank. Now that the FDIC is broke and has to boprrow money from the Banks we are in deepre doo doo. Every cent of money that Obama is spending today is debt pure debt and no way to ever pay it off. All of the treasury bonds sold to China are debt and no way in hell can nthe Chinese ever redeem them. Hah

    • the issue of taxation is beyond partisan politics... people need to wake up and look at how our economy is "working" and see for themselves what damage the federal reserve has done to this country.....

    • Oh my God what a fucking idiot.

Reid argues that it's voluntary because in other countries they automatically deduct the taxes...so that's not voluntary, but HERE you can choose to pay it later...

but if you don't pay, you go to jail or have all your assets taken, or both.

This is so revealing of the absolute IDIOCY of the Democrats. How can anyone possibly have any confidence in elected leaders who are that STUPID?!

    • Yes, taxes are voluntary. But if you choose not to pay, the IRS will have your ass thrown in jail, after they clean out your bank accounts.

Psst. I heard in the grapevine that the Annointed One, BHO, is about to make a major statement tonight that from now on, he declares DEATH to be VOLUNTARY.

And since it came from his Holy lips, it must be so!

    • Taxes are voluntary: you are free not to pay taxes just like you are free to accept the IRS smackdown that will ensue when they find out what choice you made. at least taxes arent taken out of your paycheck automatically...oh wait they are.

    • Even the IRS says paying taxes is voluntary. However, unless one is the Secretary of Treasury or a congressman, this voluntariness is done at the point of a gun.

Harry Reid, wrong about so many things is wrong about this also. It is only voluntary if you are paying taxes. NOt paying leads to a stint in the gulag as a political prisoner.

Something is wrong when a government jails its people for failure to pay their stipend. Isn't extortion wonderful???

Aw Timothy the non-tax payer and then OMG I didn't know....and then no fees attached to his lack of paying.

If only we, us small non cheating democrat people, could have such a valid excuse and such luck.

    • Harry Reed is a veteran politician and knows the politicians creed; say nothing, do nothing, see nothing. He could continue like this all day and still say nothing. One thing all Americans understand is FEAR and Fear is what they have from every agency of this government. Fear is how they have built up this power base over the past 100 years. But perhaps it will be their downfall.
See Harry Reed and the entire government thinks all of us are stupid and ignorant and we cannot prove otherwise. But just between you and I, Harry Reed is a sleezeball and he has been in many shady deals but like all politicians he has friends in the right places.

    • We have come so far from protecting individual liberty and private property in this country.
Who would voluntarily turn over the fruits of their labor to the crooks and thieves and Empire builders?
Never, ever again vote for someone that tells you you are free while they steal your property. All of your labor is your private property.
The new meaning of liberty. Altruism at gunpoint.

    • There seems to be some sort of semantical disagreement between the two. They both seem to be correct in there own mutual separate arguments but it seems that while the interviewer is stating the obvious argument that the terminology of "voluntary taxation" is a misnomer the Senator Harry Reid doesn't seem to understand why the use of the words taxation and voluntary together is a oxymoron. How the senator fails to comprehend this obvious fact is truly astonishing. Again I understand the definition of "voluntary taxation" and how it differs from involuntary taxation but the point is that putting the word voluntary in front of taxation does in no way shape or form change the inherently involuntary nature of taxation. Whether you are for or against taxation is irrelevant.

    • Every time I hear about taxes, I think of Ed and Elaine Brown... they have kind of slipped under the radar and it is unfortunate because they took a stand, got media attention, but were somehow ignored after the next big headline came up.....

    • Well as he is putting it he is correct. We the American people do in fact voluntarily set our own taxes, but we do it as a group.

You also have the option to pay no taxes at all if you wish. All you have to do is be poor.

Usual happybunnies ethics complaints: It's mostly an ad. The article is another utube link he refuses to post in any fashion but as a click through ad it won't show up unless scripts on the peacefreedomhappybunnies site is allowed. Not utube scripts but actual site specific ones. I'm really going to have to take a look at that script. One wonders why goes through such contortions to make people run it.

That is an agreement under duress, which is non binding. I do not have to choose between accepting one thing, or move from the country I am a legal citizen of. That is not voluntary, that is coercion.

There is a difference in paying taxes that are constitutional and taxes that are in direct conflict with a freer society. Let's get serious for a second and quit the facade that taxes are being well spent and for the People....this much is true....we need less slavery and more personal choice and freedom.

Dude, taxes are IN THE CONSTITUTION.

      Perhaps you should read it.

Maybe the 16th amendment? Dealing with income tax?

Or perhaps Article 1, Section. 8.
      Clause 1 or, Article I, Section. 9.
      Clause 4?

Duress? Hardly. Nobody is forcing you to live here.

If you want to live in a civilized society you have to pay taxes to pay for public needs. End of story.

If you don't want to pay taxes, you can simply move somewhere where you don't have to put up with the 'oppression' of having roads, public water, public schools, libraries, the military, fire departments, and the rest.

If I bought some property and lived on it, completely seperated, growing my own food, providing for myself, I would still be forced to pay taxes even if I did not partake in the "roads, schools, etc." If I refused, I would be jailed. This is coercion.

I am not against taxes, but let's not pretend that they are voluntary. Personally, I think everyone must help pay for society, the idea that human beings are individuals and individuals only is simply silly.

    • Here in America volunteering is like the old Byzantium volunteering to accept Christianity. After Constantinius had laid down the plans for the new state religion, the people were told to accept Christianity or forfeit their heads. Of course most of the people hept their heads . Here in America you are told to volunteer to pay your taxes or sacrifice your freedom and be sentenced for life for not volunteeriing to pay your taxes. Remember... I want a thousand volunteers, you, you, and you too, You etc. Strange how power really does corrupt and gain strength.

    • Don't forget Tim!

Toomre Capital Markets LLC ("TCM") wrote about the possible willful failure of Treasury Secretary-nominee Timothy Geithner to pay his social security taxes during the 2001-2004 period when he was employed at the International Monetary Fund. Those posts were WSJ: IMF Informed Geithner on Taxes and Timothy Geithner Has Some Past Tax Problems.

lol and now he is the Treasury Secretary!!!

It's true. You can go into the Constitution and pull the Amendment that discusses taxation. However, the courts aren't going to accept it as proof since it has been ignored in the past by judges.

The Federal Reserve and IRS need to be shut down.

I don't disagree with what taxes do, though. They help fix our highways, fund our schools, etc.

And if the taxes were used SOLELY for these purposes, there would be no corruptions. However, when the corrupt are leading the blind they are bound to pull some shady shit.

I wish well for your family member, and I hope that everything turns out okay for him. The fact that we are jailing people 75+ years imprisonment for taxes is tantamount to how ludicrous this country's tax laws have gotten.

    • They're supposed to be. However, the Federal Reserve and IRS are so deep in the pockets of Americans that they are able to successfully detain people for NOT paying as well as being able to defend themselves in court despite not having one law in the book stating Taxation is Mandatory.
