In a nutshell, it will cost $6.5 billion over the next 20 years to maintain the fence along the U.S.-Mexico border. However, despite the fact that $2.4 billion has already been spent to build 633 miles of fence along the southwest border, there's no way to evaluate cost-wise whether the fence has helped to control the flow of illegal immigrants. If there is a will, there is a way. And beleive me the illegal immigrants crossing our border have huge expectations of America and won't let a fence stop them from getting here. This is a huge waste of money and I believe it's nothing but racially-set political propaganda. What do you think.

to make the fence work; it must be built and maintained by mexicans. the mexicans that get across the border are the best, hardest working and most determined people in mexico. the lazy or average don't even try to cross.
thought for the day; what if indians put up a fence to keep your fore fathers out? would your ancestors go away or would they kill to get their god given land?
i'm an indian and i marvel at your sense of ownership. why would you think you have more of a right to my land than a mexican? does god love you more? - 3 years ago

PILGRIM- Euphemism for illegal immigrant - Or Refugee pick one yourself.
If immigrants were a problem they wouldn't be here. The real problem is people like on this thread that perpetuate hate and are extremely divisive. - 3 years ago

that border fence photo looks like something out of Jurasic Park...
now that we have this George Bush gift to his favorite contractor, how does the U.S. propose stopping the problem of Immigrants coming across the boarder in cars??? Which is a more typical way to enter the country.... - 3 years ago

What is odd about the "fence/wall" discussion, is the insistence that "these things don't work",... BUT THEY DO! They do, thats why nations and prisons and city states and China and Israel have and do build them. A "methinks you protest too much" nay sayer lobby. Sure you can build one that works,....you just to have a design that doesn't suck and the will and focus to build it. The "should we " is another question, and perhaps more important. BUT YES, you can keep a divided Berlin divided by putting a big wall in the middle of it. Also to consider,...a Mexico wall, could be 75% effective and be HUGELY economically potent. Big business would HATE a 75% effective wall. Thats why the are quite o.k. with the "cant work" lobby.

None of those walls worked. the mongolians still breached the China Wall, the Berlin wall became a mockery and was hatefully torn down, and our own Border wall has holes in it that span miles. If they want to get into America badly enough a wall won't stop them.

REAL BORDER FENCE!!
that pic is misleading.
This thing is gigantic some 15' tall and extends another 4 feet below ground. That is double layered 1/4 inch mesh. Even with all that it has been breached some 3000 times this year alone. I must add this Photo is from Border crossing at Santa Teresa New Mexico, in middle of desert. Its gets significantly higher here in El Paso raised on concrete levees that are 6' high all ready

I think that as a nation we need to think about how illegal immigration affects the country as a whole. I live in California and find that the majority of the Hispanic population here have crossed the international border illegally. Unfortunately for us we get to front the bill for the immigrants. Often times they are allowed to apply for health benefits that aren't even available to the everyday working citizen. Yet I get to pay for it out of my hard earned pay check. Also because of the major influx of illegal immigration its much harder to find better paying jobs because there is always a person willing to work for much less than your average citizen would typically work. There needs to be more enforcement of our immigration laws. Not just building and maintaining a fence but physically removing people that are here illegally. Because of illegal immigration identity theft is at an all time high. Immigrants using citizens social security cards to get jobs or apply for social benefits. Benefits that as a citizen I'm not eligible for. Even though I pay for them with taxes.

Best opinion iv'e heard, I agree with you fully in that the biggest issue is deportation and regulation of the immigrants already here. The fence is a mere symbol for our want to keep them out but inability to do so.

I don't care what they say the fence is being built to keep us in not the illegals out. They want to control how and when we enter and leave the contry. They are getting ready for the war that is going to be faught on U.S. soil.

Scary thought, even scarier that i think that could be slightl true. I don't think they would plan on keeping law abiding citizens in, but if a renegade citizen tried to leave country in a car the fence could stop him with the border patrol and gates at ever road. But then again there is no fence on the canadian side, so if they are trying to keep us in all we'd have to do is fly north for the winter :P

The fence should be electrified and there should be randomly placed land mines all around it.
6.5 billion over 20 years is a lot less than illegals cost us every year.

Electrifying a fence thousands of miles long and issuing land mines would be impossible to maintain energy and money wise.
Also illegal immigrants from mexico, even though they don't add to social security or income tax, still boost our economy by doing jobs no one else will do for a low wage, and then buy american goods with that low wage and must pay taxes on those goods. I don't beleive we should allot illegal's in but unfortunately they are good for the economy, not bad. - 3 years ago

Electrified is a must but instead of land mines make them flash bangs so they go blind in the night and just say that they are land mines.
