    • He better get his stuff in gear! We should have a comprehensive energy bill that includes both fossil fuel and noise in the table. We, the public cannot seat back and wait for the Politicians to Act. For me the time is up! Many of the issues that happened on the Bush Admin, still happening in his Administration. Our transportation here in the City are comprised of dinosaurs acoustic psychopaths and I have not have seen a single technological change towards Green policies. Everybody remember the Green policies right? The one that follows the philosophy to do or to develop products and services that are healthy, safe and clean!

    • I think it's incredible that so many people still claim that "global warming" is a hoax, as I'm seeing in many of these comments.

I understand, and even applaud, the hesitation with accepting an idea like this. When a complex scientific theory is popularized to the point that even my own grandmother (who once asked me where the internet was) is telling me to watch my CO2 emissions, I think it's important to do some research.

But the fact is that every major scientific institution with a reputation to uphold has at least agreed that human activity can affect climate.Whether that change will be catastrophic is apparently a challenging question to answer.

In fact, many scientists simply agree that while the theory of catastrophic climate change seems possible, there simply isn't enough information available to confirm it.

So you may say "Who cares, scientists are wrong all the time. The truth is, they don't have a clue what's going on."

Maybe. But what I can't understand is how someone can claim to know that it is absolutely false. Doesn't that require some degree of certainty that can't exist given the circumstances? To question a theory is natural, and even helpful, but to completely disregard it, especially when the science is right there in front of us, just seems ignorant.

On top of that, I've never heard mention of a flaw in the theory itself, only the proposal that wide scale belief of the theory would benefit our government by giving them greater control over us.

This seems a bit silly to be honest. Talk about a roundabout way of controlling citizens through new laws and taxes. Is there really no better way to do that?

"Hey guys, how do we control these guys and get them to pay us more?"

"Ummm... let's tell them the world will end unless they divest from big oil and initiate a reconstruction of our economy"

"How the hell will that help? Won't that just take decades and tons of work?"

"Good point. Let's just pass another patriot act."

There is no good reason to say that this theory is false. That's not to say that it isn't. Let's just get rid of all the ignorant excuses to call it a hoax and get down the the science. That's all I'm saying.

    • people are gullible to not see that this is an elaborate hoax to loot americans of their cash. Any time you have major propaganda like this you can be sure that they're after our money or more power.
Obama will end up pledging our money but other countries will blow it off. americans will pay for the so -called climate change. The rest of the planet will loot us and our president will welcome it.
and before you start -- it has nothing to do with his skin tone.

You're comments you are leaving are rather immature, and poorly conceived and written.
I challenge you to prove that climate change doesn't exist and isn't happening. Cite some legitimate sources, please.

I doubt I have to explain much history. But with the industrial revolution, man began to burn up fossil fuels. And the burning of fossil fuels results in the release of CO2, Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas.
Greenhouse gases capture heat from the sun, and keep our fragile planet at the right temperature. This action is similar to the glass panes of a greenhouse.
But this recent introduction of mass amounts of CO2 is something the earth has never felt before. And has happened in the blink of an eye as far as the planet's time line is concerned.
As you can see in the data attached, its true that the earth does warm and cool. And it is true that the warming and cooling is directly linked to the amount of greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere. True again that in recent years global temperature has risen due to a direct link with greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
At present, no scientific body of national or international standing disagrees with these facts. They do agree that climate change is the cause of humans.

      mcjk,

"They do agree that climate change is the cause of humans."

Actually this is about as wrong as you can get. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of scientists who are now changing their opinions on MMGW. You sound like Al Gore where you claim something is scientific fact when it isn't in reality.

I'm not disputing humans put CO2 into the atmosphere. I'm saying we aren't causing the Earth to warm. Temperature has been recorded for a very short time on the Earth scale, and scientists are saying we are actually coming out of our last ice age. So common sense would dictate that temperatures are going to rise.

I also read a study that humans are responsible for no more than a total of 3% of atmospheric carbon. Which isn't enough to actually cause a change. Volcanoes and other naturally occurring sources provide far more CO2 than humans ever could.

I don't mind cleaning up the environment. We aren't the cause of global warming though.

      libertyforall,
There are a lot of statistics out there. Ranging from: Less than 1% of scientists don't believe in global warming, to you saying that thousands have parted with the idea. And then there was Ronald Bailey, author of a book calling global warming a myth, changing his position and saying that anyone still not believing out there ought to hang it up.
According to "Surveyed Scientists believe global warming is real", CNN Jan, 20, 2009, 82% of surveyed scientists believe man caused global warming. 97% of climatologists believe man caused global warming, climatologists being the ones who study the climate. The Nay-sayers? Only 64% of pertoleum geologists believe man caused global warming. And where is their pocket at?

Prove that I am wrong to say there is no national or international scientific body that disagrees. I have not heard of a scientific body that does not believe man made carbon emissions are contributing to the rise in temperature.

So, when's the big global warming, flooding the coastal areas gonna happen? Obviously soon. Can the prophet Bobama tell us WHEN to expect this?

Just like we have to pass health care NOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (but it wouldn't take effect til 2013, a year after the uh, 2012 election....hmmmmm)

This would all be hilarious if the danger of punishment to the people in the form of higher utility rates and taxes didn't exist.

    • JohnA,

So your criticism of him is that he writes his speeches in exactly the same way both Bushes, Reagan, Clinton, Nixon and Kennedy did, huh? (I was going to include Ford, but I couldn't find one of his speeches...I'll bet he used the word "America" in that same context, though..."

As to ego...I guess I am kind of hard-pressed to imagine someone running for President of the United States without an ego. His is certainly no larger than McCain's...or Palin's for that matter.

Hey Jan. I like all the things your saying, but I hope you realize that clay here represents the argument of almost half this country against anything Obama wants to do on this. Look at the healthcare "debate". This country is not prepared to do anything really great in this area.

Maybe in 10 years we'll be more progressive and ready to get serious? Or 20? Maybe it won't be too late by then? Maybe we're doomed? The fact is, China is far more likely than us to really take the lead on this. If they do, they'll also secure economic superpower status for a century.

Obama's baby steps forward look pretty good when you consider the alternative: Republicans denying there's a problem and accusing those who want to do something about it communists.

dittos! See my response below. The very scientist
promoting this (and gore) came out and switched his position.

The earth has always warmed and cooled. It's natural. But, throw far left liberals in the mix of something normal and the result is to tax it because they don't understand normal.

In the 70's we were going to go into an ice age. Guess who was in charge? Libs. Carter farter. Google "Newsweek 1974 Global Cooling" and when you find the article, you'll see that the solution to global cooling would be to shoot CO2 to in the atmosphere to create warming.......LOL! Tards.

You also forget that this is not a dictatorship. Look how hard getting any kind of progressive healthcare has been. Treating sick people is an absolute no brainer compared to making major investments and sacrifices to fight global warming. Especially considering half this country believes it's a hoax. If Obama were to keep half his campaign promises, we'd probably have a civil war on our hands. I hope he does, but this will be one of the most difficult areas. It's just too easy for the rabid right wing to spin into something terrifying. Just look how riled up it has gotten this nobama nut who can't stop posting here.

      @Abehammy

I am well aware of the Health care issues going on right now. But he can stand to focus on more than one task at a time. Given the sluggish nature of out government, the faster he does anything the quicker it will supposedly get done.

      @DougChristian

That is the president's job. To introduce and approve laws that will benefit everyone. In essence, to make change. Perhaps he should just start doing things in the best interest of the people. The GOP never waited for the other side to approve of things they really wanted to do; they just did whatever they wanted to do. The Democrats should do the same. They should drag all those dinosaurs fighting health-care into the 21st century, kicking and screaming, instead of trying to reach across party aisles. That is obviously not going to work. He should write legislation about climate issues and establish new rules on industry to promote clean energy practices, and demand anyone who isn't for clean energy is "Unamerican". All this diplomacy and posturing is getting us no where, so he needs to ACT.

If he REALLY wanted us to make a difference... we would be. It's all bullshit. We don't care, and we don't have to... because our people fear our government and have no voice left.

The simple truth is... they don't want us to move forward, and they're being paid by too many people who share that sentiment. I voted for him... and I love the guy... but I have no doubt that he's lying to us.

    • I'm really glad we have a president who is doing something about this. But I still don't feel it is nearly enough. So far we're doing nearly squat to combat climate change. What we need is something as drastic as what the oil companies have done. Big Oil destroyed electric streetcars/trains in the 40's, and killed the electric car in '99. We need to actually act on this and turn around our emissions.
Imagine how many jobs would be created with the dawn of a green infrastructure. Solar, wind, geothermal jobs would be everywhere. Hell, I'd even be okay with more nuclear power for a while, as long as it was temporary. At this point we have to take drastic measures. Creating one off shore wind farm isn't enough, there needs to be hundreds of wind farms popping up on the shore and off.

It is easy to say you are determined to do something when standing at the podium of the UN where all of these country's leaders will now have a battle of the speeches to see who can deliver the best one to make the nightly news... It is a whole different thing to show it in practice.

And 20% by 2020 isn't even near enough of a reduction, and we need at least 90% reductions by 2050 as well. So what specifically are we doing to get there and how will we afford it with wars going on?
