FDA bans flavored/clove cigs to "protect public health."

As an individual of legal smoking age who enjoys a Black on occasion, this comes as an outrage. A quick perusal of the FDA’s flimsy research polls[1] and somewhat vague explanations begs the question, “What’s next?” We all remember how prohibition worked out. Am I the only one who feels like the government is overstepping its bounds and being a touch too parental in this situation? The only way to completely stop underage smoking is to ban all tobacco products, plain and simple. Is that the next step? We all know the health risks of the products we choose to consume, whether it be tobacco or alcohol or even caffeine. We can read the warning labels. I feel the FDA has insulted the intelligence of the American people.
A few days ago I made a trip to the local tobacco shop to grab a couple packs before the ban. The owner told me he’d gotten a letter stating that the cigarettes would be considered contraband from the 22nd on. The FDA’s website warns that anyone caught with cloves can be subject to seizure, fines, etc. Distributors who fail to comply with the ban will receive a Warning Letter before the “FDA may take enforcement action to protect the public health,” (see their FAQ on Flavored Tobacco[2]).
Personally, I don’t need the government to protect my health. Djarums are still available online, much cheaper than they were in the shops. Many of the websites are questionable, but hopefully it will still be possible to ship from overseas without being scammed, (or caught).

this is unquestionably one of the most wack, illogical and ridiculous bans the fda has ever put into action..
what else is there to say? the fda's decision making is de-evolving... what a pathetic waste.

Since when did the FDA care about our health? The FDA has become a political tool and science that is purchased for political reasons.
I don't trust the FDA anymore to be unbiased.

I'm drinking straight bourbon whiskey, taking prescription hydrocodone, smoking a flavored cigarette and firing my licensed revolver into a nearby tree.
Guess which one of these is illegal.

I'd rather smoke weed than tobacco anyday.

Why can't we just let people enjoy the things they enjoy if they are not hurting anyone? Come on FDA you have such bigger fish to fry, why don't you improve our food and drug industries, and let people have their tabacco.

Hmm, is there a possibility that this in fact, would also make the import and sale of hookah tobacco illegal? I'm pretty sure it falls under "flavored tobacco". And as to all this talk about how cloves aren't for sale. As much as I can say that they are good. I think it is true that it does get people started smoking at a younger age. When I was younger, I'd enjoy clove cigarettes better than the normal camel cigarette. So I can se where the FDA is coming from, although making it Illegal may be going to far, but I guess the smokers of America will just take one for the team on this one.

Couldn't one argue to ban flavored alcohol beverages such as wine coolers, mikes hard lemonade, ect? It's obviously geared towards people under legal drinking age. Nobody is upset about that.
This is leading to prohibition again, but over tobacco?

I love how apocalyptic people get anytime cigarettes have any sort of ban or tax put on them.
It's amazing what an addiction can do to make people desperate.
The best part is the attacks on others for being irrational during the rants.
At any rate. I'll agree this ban is silly. I just love the slippery slope mentality people get when anything they like ends up having any sort of roadblock.
I can't masturbate in public, you don't see me running out and making a website devoted to the legalization of jerking it on a park bench.
I imagine the original thought process behind this ban was just that many of the names of flavored cigarettes were obviously targeting people far younger than 18. They had names that were almost sesame street inspired.
In the end if everyone coming to the table for cigarettes was honest this sort of thing wouldn't happen. For the most part people have nobody to blame but disingenous tobacco sales tactics. It's not much deeper than that.
I wish all you smokers the best and just remember that the 2000's have been the largest years for ban removals in the last 50 years or so according to Google (which I figure is accurate enough for this post).

Some good points in there and i agree with the fact that "smokiers" can get so riled up about their habit that will and damn near get to the point of "lock and load" but the analogy is HORRIBLE.
If you jack off on a park bench you are impeding on my right to not have to witness something that could be considered offensive and as an assault to the psyche. Smoking can be intrusive but on the other hand you can do it in your own home like beatin it but there aren't any bans on beatin it in your home, now is there?

i bet most of you advocates for freedom think you should be able to ingest arsenic pills if you wanted as well. True Freedom. come on people, the masses are ignorant and easily swayed and sometimes people just dont know whats good for them. just because there are options doesnt mean the government should allow them, in reality a government is there to protect its people, and as much as we want to fight it, sometimes we should listen. im not saying tobacco is really that bad, or flavord cigarettes, but a problem arises when someone with no self control begins smoking a pack or 2 a day. it doesnt matter if youre smoking tea leaves, that shit will kill you. lets not lie to ourselves, smoke in your lungs is not a good thing, however enjoyable it may be. and as for smokers of cannabis, there is no possible way to smoke as much pot in a day as a serous cigarette smoker can, youd pass out before half a pack of "pot cigarettes", so its not accurate to compare the 2 because consumption is completely different. im not saying that we should do away with our options but there are things that are not good for us and we need to learn some self control.

ill agree with that. its not that im for taking away liberty's maybe just tapering them, like a pack a day limit, as marshal as that sounds. maybe there wouldnt be problems like obesity in the us if there was a little governmental imposed self control, taxes could do that pretty well. a fat tax, or cancer tax, or just a luxury tax like many other countries have

I can't believe what you are saying! The FDA needs to put out the facts on why these cigarettes need to be taken off the market besides the lame ass fact that it appeals to underage smokers, all things illegal appeal to the underage toxic or not. It sounds like Phillip Morris and the whole lot are trying to corner the market.

This is effing bullshit. I'm not a smoker (never really was), but I used to enjoy smoking a djarum every now and then while out drinking back at college.
Take away advertising, promote anti smoking campaigns that show how pointless it is to pick up the habit . . . but don't effing ban them! People should have the choice.
I'm gonna go buy a pack for the first time in several years . . . must, have . . . forbidden fruit!

That sucks blacks are technically a cigar. I was watching a current piece on TV about cigar makers, and one of them even said cigars don't raise life insurance premiums because they pose less of a health risk. Horrible, I love those little tasty bastards.... And the damn wine flavored ones, even the occasional clove cigarette...
This is horrible talk all the crap you want about cigarettes, but every time I turn around I'm seeing a 70+ year old smoking cigarettes and doing fine.
The only thing funnier than a smoking chimp is a 90 year great grandmother (that could still whoop your ass) chain-smoking and in almost perfect health.
Yeah cigarettes kill, but not everyone... They don't even hurt everyone who uses them....

This is total bull shit! I'm 18 right now and cloves are all i ever smoke-which is rare in itself! The problem with underage smoking isn't cloves! You aren't going to stop it by taking away cloves. The FDA has gone too far this time. They shouldn't take these away from us because underage people are smoking them. 18+ citizens know full well the risks. That's why the damn FDA puts the label on the damn box! Let us make our conscious decision to smoke it! I really feel like punching the FDA right in the ovaries. Fuck!

everything else that can kill you (chemically) is regulated. maybe if you only smoked 5 a day.at ten bucks a pop. like my weed costs me. nobody would get cancer.....make em ten buck a cig.....heath care my ass. with people willingly buying shit thats worse than heroin.

do you geniuses realize that you are proponents of PROHIBITION?
How did that turn out?
This is what is so f*ing funny about liberals. On the one hand you nuts promote the legalization of marijuana (and some want legalization of other drugs as well, under the guise of liberty and to 'end the war on drugs', which is a war on the smuggling of contraband substances that are highly desired), and then applaud a NEW prohibition, "for our health".
Are you aware that there is already a black market for cigarrettes that has created a whole new illegal and violent trade?
GENIUSES!
NEXT to be banned (to reduce health care costs):
