Questions are prearranged; ‘It was awful,’ one US delegate saysHONG KONG — Former US vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin said the US government was wasting taxpayers’ money and could aggravate poverty, said delegates at her first speech outside North America on Wednesday.
Palin, the former governor of Alaska, gave hundreds of financial big-hitters at the CLSA Investors’ Forum in Hong Kong a wide-ranging speech that covered Alaska, international terrorism, US economic policy and trade with China.
Her performance, which was closed to the media, divided opinion.
Some of those who attended praised her forthright views on government social and economic intervention and others walked out early in disgust.
“She was brilliant,” said a European delegate, on condition of anonymity.
“She said America was spending a lot of money and it was a temporary solution. Normal people are having to pay more and more but things don’t get better. The rich will leave the country and the poor will get poorer.”
Two US delegates left early, with one saying “it was awful, we couldn’t stand it any longer”. He declined to be identified.
Palin, who shot to national and international prominence after Senator John McCain picked her as his running mate last year, stepped down as Alaska governor in July but has provided little insight into her future plans.
She is expected to write a book and has said she will travel the country campaigning for candidates who share her political ideology.
In the CLSA speech, which lasted about 75 minutes, Palin also tackled the recent US trade spat with China, a country she said the United States should have the best possible relationship with.
According to delegates, she said US President Barack Obama’s administration worsened an already difficult situation when earlier this month he slapped duties on Chinese tire imports blamed for costing American jobs.
They said she praised the economic policies of former US President Ronald Reagan and criticised the current administration for intervening too much during the recent financial crisis.
Although she touched on the threat posed to the United States by terrorism and talked about links with traditional US allies in Asia such as Japan, Australia and South Korea, one Asian delegate complained she devoted too much time to her home state of Alaska.
“It was almost more of a speech promoting investment in Alaska,” he said, declining to be named.
“As fund managers we want to hear about the United States as a whole, not just about Alaska. And she criticised Obama a lot but offered no solutions.”
Another said he was disappointed that she took only pre-arranged questions.
There were no apparent gaffes though from Palin, who was mocked during last year’s presidential campaign for her lack of experience in foreign affairs and for her verbal blunders.
Several delegates saw the speech as a sign of her ambitions to run as a presidential candidate in 2012 and a useful indication of the potential direction of US politics in the future.
“It was fairly right-wing populist stuff,’ one US delegate said.
Palin blasted Obama’s proposals on healthcare, reiterating a previous statement made to the press that the plan would include a bureaucratic “death panel” that would decide who gets assistance, he said.
Another from the United States said: “She frightens me because she strikes a chord with a certain segment of the population and I don’t like it.”
**CLSA, an arm of French bank Credit Agricole, said it closed Palin’s session to the media after she indicated that she would have to adjust her speech if reporters were present.**

**The Leftists tried to bring down George Bush by calling the rescuing of millions from Sadaam's bloody hands, "Bush's War."**
Since not everyone is identical or think en masse, as much as you'd like to beleive, I can only speak for myself.
Hopwever, your sentence containing the remark "the rescuing of millions from Sadaam's bloody hands" made me laugh aloud, though. From March 2003 to...
-June 2006 Iraq Family Health Survey 151,000 violent deaths.
-June 2006 Lancet survey 601,027 violent deaths out of 654,965 excess deaths.
-August 2007 Opinion Research Business survey 1,033,000 violent deaths as a result of the conflict.
-April 2009 Associated Press 110,600 violent deaths
-June 2009 Iraq Body Count 92,489 – 100,971 violent civilian deaths as a result of the conflict.Along with other human rights organizations, The Documental Centre for Human Rights in Iraq has compiled documentation on over 600,000 civilian executions in Iraq. Human Rights Watch reports that in one operation alone, the Anfal, Saddam killed 100,000 Kurdish Iraqis. Another 500,000 are estimated to have died in Saddam's needless war with Iran. Coldly taken as a daily average for the 24 years of Saddam's reign, these numbers give us a horrifying picture of between 70 and 125 civilian deaths per day for every one of Saddam's 8,000-odd days in power"
Yet, the suicide bombings only began en masse after the Americans and Brits arrived.
Keep in mind an estimated 2,000,000 are displaced to other countries from which they will probably never return and most live in squalid refugee camps. I bet they're just falling all over themselves to thank Bush.**Do they now have the guts to call this Afghanistan conflict, "Obama's War?"**
Not sure what that's supposed to mean but I have registered my objections to Obama's policies on numerous occasions, whereas, I would seriously doubt whether you ever criticized Bush. Ever. Unless you can prove it.
I can.

Don't know about other readers, but I had never heard of CLSA before the publicity given to Palin's speaking at the CLSA convention. Maybe having her as a speaker was subordinate to having CLSA's name getting more coverage due to it's linkage with Palin's name. Smart business sense!

RFIDemocrac - and all shit depends on one thing. Oil.... you can't make war, you have no leverage, without.... Oil. That's one reason not drilling at home is the most insane thing I have ever seen from our elected officials.
Now granted, Bush was a pussy when it came to China, Iran, N. Korea - although he was ham strung by congress. Bolton could have done a lot. Clinton and Carter share blame for being passivist pansies for kicking the can down the road for us to deal with. Bill really should have turned Hillary's goons loose to kill them all - pull a little Vince Foster on their asses.
Our indebtedness is killing us... Agree or not, this shit must end now. And I also believe it was calculated and deliberate.

'Pussy is kind.' Completley clueless about anything aside from clearin- brush in Crawford, where he spent 1/3 of his tragic 'Presidency'
'Bolton could have done a lot' Now your funnin' me right?
Bolton could have done a lot of what? Bolton single-handedly set back US international relations at least a decade. Even the US' closest allies hated his guts.
About what i'd expect from A Bush recess appointment who Congress overwhelmingly refused to confirm for a second term.'Our indebtedness is killing us'

"China doesn't have shit"
Oh...really. Last I heard, they own a former empire with a former manufacturing/agricultural -based economy that I could name. Bought it lock, sock and barrel, I hear. too bad about those expensive military adventures.
*According to a state report on Tuesday, China's economy was 16.8% larger in 2004 than initially calculated. *
Oh my. 4.4% and falling. Oops. The late, great USA.
At least the US has lots of old nukes lying around. oh, wait...The People's Republic of China has developed and possessed weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and nuclear weapons. China is estimated by the Federation of American Scientists to have an arsenal of about 180 active nuclear weapon warheads and 240 total warheads as of 2009, which would make it the fourth largest nuclear arsenal amongst the five major nuclear weapon states.
Yeah, well, they're just learning, right? Oh....
China's first nuclear test took place in 1964 and first hydrogen bomb test occurred in 1967.

UWAZell...
Your talk is sounds exactly like you are reading from the New York Slimes, "All the news we decide to print."
What else would we expect from a newspaper which tries to write for the ex Europeans or the current Moslem Europeans. They fool people every also, with same air of false sophistication.
Yours is the typical rhetoric one would expect from the always-twenty-years-behind-America crowd. Your deceptive air of superiority is poorly disguised.
When American were walking around in jeans and dungarees, it took Europe twenty years to catch up and today they're all over Europe. When Americans stopped smoking in huge percentages, the wise, advanced and refined Europeans didn't seem to get the message from more than five million doctors and studies, and so they were comfortable with lung cancer until their medical knowledge caught up.We are the American people and we have to live with this man as our leader. We don't live in a Europe which is very rapidly becoming the Arab-Muslim Europe it never was. Enjoy it.
You have to live with your leaders. If you think Mr. Obama is the absolute best thing since apple pie, fine.
However, many of us have other opinions. - 3 years ago

Your first mistake was to assume that I read the NY Times... I don't. Moreover, when making a statement with the intent of appearing to be, for lack of a better word, whitty, it is best to actually check it ensure that it actually makes sense. 'Your deceptive air of superiority is poorly disguised.' And, 'Your talk sounds...' Those statements are ridiculous; I mean did you read that.
However, most importantly it is imperative to get your facts straight. You stated that, When Americans stopped smoking in huge percentages, the wise, advanced and refined Europeans didn't seem to get the message from more than five million doctors and studies,..." I really hate to give this bloke an ounce of credit, but thanks to Hitler Europeans knew about the dangers of smoking long before Americans 'stopped smoking in large percentages.' Hitler made informative video's about the health risks that result from smoking such of shortness of breath and so forth and actually banned smoking in Nazi Germany [side note: you are aware that Germany is in Europe correct]. Additionally, it is important to note that they were not aware that smoking can lead to cancer due to the obvious technological reasons, etc.
Lastly, the whole purpose of your message was really to spew more racists rubbish about Muslims' and further espouse your disdain for the more sophisticated Europeans. Mind you that last part of that statement is sarcastic... ignorant people live in every country and you are evident of that.
Lastly, refrain from writing to me personally with further rubbish.

We don't have a damn thing to apologize for - to anybody. What you and your lib friends don't realize is that - so goes us, so goes the world.

That is the most Ameri-centric thing I've heard someone say in a long time. Obama had some mess to clean up, which was not his decision. What's hard to understand about the relationship of cause and effect? If we do something bad.....bad things happen to us. So, to minimize the problems we have in the future, we try to help reintroduce ourselves as a helpful and caring nation, ready to work with the world as a cooperative force.
And if we go belly up? Do you know how many empires have risen and fallen? We are another blink of an eye on the history that is mankind. What do you think happened before America existed? Nothing?

@Jack
I put liberal democrat in quotations because Obama is NOT a liberal. He is a political centrist who supports both liberal and conservative agendas on different issues.
The US is in decline and has been ever since the 1950's. We are hardly the last bastion of Freedom and Democracy. The EU has a greater population and GDP then we do. They also have higher voting rates than the US and better healthcare... for cheaper!
And yes we do in fact have quite a bit to apologize for. The US has supported dictatorships and totalitarian states when convenient for us. How can you say we are the champions of freedom and democracy when we let genocides go on in Africa? Or we use China for cheap labor?

You are right to put 'liberal' in quotes, because Obama is not one. I could list a very few in office but I'd leave his name off.
"What you and your lib friends don't realize is that - so goes us, so goes the world." Really? I thought China was the superpower and the US is an indebted wannabe. Am I right? China has a massive military force, plus they have both money for gas and, well, gas. Maybe you are thinking of the seventies? How is the US going to pay off Reagan and Bush's debts unless they 'bow' to China?"When the last bastion of freedom and democracy in the world turns belly up. All of the freaks in the asylum are in charge - then like wise with the rest of us - your ass is grass."

Wow, that post actually rather interesting. Listen, seeing how Americans generally do not actually leave the country... and no mate, Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas do not count, let me tell you what the 'international community' thinks about Obama that FAUX News is not reporting.... We think he is great. Actually, he is the best 'blip' to happen to your country in quite sometime... especially since Bush... now that bloke is a running joke.
When we discuss the US these days it is not to poke fun at what your president did, said, or had thrown at him. What you need to realise is that to the rest of the world, for all intensive purposes, your president is America. When Bush was in office, where ever you traveled he provided comedic relief. Now, we see this bloke and think that you all are actually on track to joining the rest of the enlightened western world.
And Palin... I lived in the states for a while, and in GB and here in Oz we have rather unbiased news, i.e. the BBC. We actually reslise that Pain is not that bright; further, she too provided much comedic relief during the campaign. I remember being in the library at uni when the election results were coming through and everywhere you looked people had them streaming to their computer. We were excited when Obama won.
If you believe that being a laughing stock to the world and being seen as rather unintelligent is 'distinctly American', perhaps the biggest threat to America is not terrorism, but rather ignorance.

Lol, and what western country are you moving to since you have such disdain for 'socialism'. WAIT!, we have healthcare for everyone as well... SOCIALISM !!!
A number of American's, in general, do not actually know what socialism actually is, and interestingly enough the rest of t/western world is rather socialist. We recognise the need to take care of everyone. Yes, there are people who abuse the system, but that is the minority who for some reason gets the most publicity.

I don't think Palin can even win a Primary. With people like Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Tom Ridge, Mitt Romney and Rudy Guiliani, she will have her little bible-thumping hands full. She may even have to re-read ALL of the magagzines and newpapers. So, I'm not going to waste alot of time fearing her "rise to power". She's an uneducated quitter who can barely manage her own household. It will be fun to watch her get bludgeoned by her own party. She is now in the minority of the minority and fading. Fair enough, but I'm sure she will list this speech on her resume for foreign policy along with seeing Russia from Alaska.

Ha!
"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008The air defense identification zone, almost completely over water, extends 12-mile past the perimeter of the United States. … However, no Russian military planes have been flying even into that zone, said Maj. Allen Herritage, a spokesman for the Alaska region of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, at Elmendorf Air Force Base. “To be very clear, there has not been any incursion in U.S. airspace in recent years,” Herritage said.
Responding to Herritage’s statement, Palin’s foreign policy adviser Steve Biegun said that Palin was trying to point out that the “geographical location of Alaska has unique attributes,” unlike “many states in the union.”
