Greenpeace greets G20 leaders with massive banner off Pittsburgh Bridge

JanforGore
Pittsburgh, United States — Greenpeace activists are rappelling off of a Pittsburgh bridge with a massive banner displaying our message to G20 leaders gathering for tomorrow's summit. The banner takes the form of stylized "road sign" that warns of the political maneuvering and delay that have put a international climate treaty in jeopardy as the world enters the final stretch on the road to Copenhagen.

"It is imperative that developed world leaders do not fail again in Pittsburgh. They must put money on the table to support developing countries" said Damon Moglen, Greenpeace USA's global warming campaign director. "It is also critical for G20 leaders agree to kick-start economic recovery through clean energy investment. Both of these elements are vital to achieve a good deal in Copenhagen and avert catastrophic climate change."

Saving the Environment and the Economy

World financial representatives and leaders of the G20 (19 of the world's largest national economies, plus the European Union) are meeting in Pittsburgh to discuss both the global financial crisis and the global climate crisis.

At this meeting President Obama, Chancellor Merkel, President Sarkozy and other G20 leaders will have an opportunity to kick-start growth and put us on a path to stopping global warming by agreeing to invest in clean, cutting edge technologies for the future. Global prosperity is not in conflict with preserving the environment--in fact, our prosperity depends on it. The decisions our leaders make at this meeting will help to decide whether we create millions of green jobs or face ecological and social collapse.

Global Warming Affects the Economy, Stupid

Already, the price tag of global warming on our economy is staggering. Today, global warming costs the world's economies $125 billion per year, according to the Global Humanitarian Forum. Given the predicted impacts--and the associated costs-- of climate change, we simply can’t afford not to tackle global warming.

    • Headline:

14 arrested in Greenpeace brudge stunts as G-20 debuts in Pittsburgh

The mayor was actually quoted as saying he was happy the troopers were there to protect them. From Greenpeace hanging a banner?

Just for you. Look at about one minute into this video and see the banner they unfurled against Bush. They aren't politically biased like you are.

    • This isn't about your idol Obama, this is about the sustainability of our planet which is much more important. And how do you know they didn't do anything regarding Bush? Where was your banner over the last eight years? This banner was geared to ALL leaders attending this G20 summit. Perhaps your ire should be directed at those it was addressed to. You go up on a bridge and repell down to unfurl a banner like that and then maybe you can stand and call someone else a coward. Perhaps they believe there is hope Obama may actually heed it, where with Bush there was none. I am absolutely amazed at those who continue to be such blazing hypocrites when it comes to holding Obama accountable for doing what Bush did, especially regarding dirty toxic tarsands. Look up Alberta Clipper pipeline and then tell me why we shouldn't hang banners now. You wouldn't hold Obama accountable for anything because you like the Bush supporters put your party or the man first over this planet. Talk about cowards.

Thankyou jan, what are these people , 12? Some times I find this current discouraging. Most of the, including myself, responses are not about the problem in face , itt's about how they respond the thought as what to do physically, greenpeace was always there, just not media'd. some grant paid more to look the other way,

    • this is all well and good, but where were they during bush's reign of environmental terror? nowhere to be found. at least not here in america. so again, more points to the sea shepherds, and again greenpeace are all fluff, no stuff. i wouldn't call them on this but they wouldn't have dared to hang a banner mocking bush, yet they did one against Obama. cowards.

I agree with you on the not sure if mankind is the leading factor . I feel that we play a part in polluting because we have not yet perfected the way's of not polluting but that's what this whole senerio is about , getting corporations to apply themselves legally to the alternatives of what our best minds have suggested and then made legally binding through congress, That's the fight . The almighty dollar. Nah , the almighty heart of we who care. And to further on this , evolution of the system, it does it's global changes without us, hope we don't drive it out of it's cycle. I don't think we are , I think what's happening is awareness of all of this through the media hyped hype. Hope I wasn't too boring.
