Dog Fighting Ring Busted At Day Care

Nine mangled and mutilated dogs have been rescued from a dog fighting ring that ran from a home day care center in west suburban Maywood, Cook County Sheriff's police said.

A news release called the scene at the three Maywood homes "the most gruesome officers had ever uncovered." One dog had its eye ripped out, another had a leg twisted backward, and a third had its lower extremities almost severed from its body.

A licensed day care operation operated from one house, and one of the three ringleaders arrested in the case is related to the day care operator, the sheriff's office said.

"Kids were playing on a swing set just 10 feet away from a vicious fighting dog and blood-stained floors," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said in a news release. "The very equipment used to train these dogs to kill was being kept in the garage right behind the house. To be engaged in this sort of activity is disturbing enough, but to take a chance with anybody's children is reprehensible."

When police got to the day care facility, children were being watched at the house. In a garage behind the house was a dangerous pit bull, according to the sheriff's release.

There was also blood on the floor and along the sides of a car in the garage, and there were syringes, medication, bite sticks, and dog fighting harnesses, police said. The highly aggressive pit bull found in the garage had a shredded chest from recent fights, and his penis was almost completely bitten off, the release said.

The day care operator said she wasn't involved in dog fighting, and the children weren't allowed near the dogs or dog fighting materials.

    • Why doesn't the media tell us about who was charged, arrested, convicted etc. Are they gettin off on telling us all the gorry details? What dog rings are in their back yards? Stupid Ass People! The media fits right in there with them. They should be charged as well.
      And is there any investigation and further busts because of this one? Or do the police just arrest one dude and let everthingelse go? Stupid Ass People!
      It never ceases to amaze me how people just let things go.

    • I would like to know what the judges do to them. They should be given a minimum of 10 years and 10 years of working with the Humane Society.

      I adopted a 2 year old Old English Bulldog that was a punching bag in a dog fighting ring. She was rescued and brought back to health, and we adopted her after she was given a temperment test by our Vet. She was skittish at first, but she is very sweet and has warmed up to the entire family. It sickens me that humans are capable of doing this to some of the friendliest creatures on Earth.

      I agree.

      Up until last year, I had a German shepherd cross that I rescued from the street .
      I treated him well, took him with me everywhere possible and fed him the best quality food that I could find.
      He lived for over fifteen years and scarcely saw the inside of a vet hospital, aside from routine visits.

      Rescue dogs are the best.

    • Jail, more jail maybe jail for ever for those who sponser these dog fights. That does not even cover the fact that people who sponser these fights cull suburban neighborhoods for dogs to steal to train their killer dogs on. They steal family pets and let their dogs kill them. I know, they stole my American Bulldog from my front yard never to be seen again. If I ever find a dogfight I won't call the police I'll firebomb the mother f--kers they will die a horrible death just like the dogs they kill

    • According to sources I've read these dog fighting rings are all over the country. It's hard to believe that so many people are engaged in this type of evil butchery of dogs. It needs to be often talked about on the news to keep it in the public's awareness and encourage whistle blowers.

    • This is disturbing and it's a good thing for everybody that it's in police hands now. But I have questions.

      From the original article, a suspect "was ticketed Tuesday for being a felon in possession of an unneutered or unspayed dog, the sheriff's office said. He was released from prison in 2006 on a drug conviction."

      Are felons not allowed to have unneutered/unspayed dogs? Is this only in Illinois? Does this only apply to felons?

      I've never had a dog and don't really know but that just seems like a strangely worded sentence (or law).

      .....the bullet, good sir, was nowhere near the kid. It just grazed right on by. He's still livin'.

      Proximity to danger for any child that you're suppose to protect should be so close to nil that is' amazing. She knew that there were dogs tearing into one another but what she cared about was the double income she was getting.

      Legit business up front. Black market crap in the back.

      When one thinks they can't be shocked any more from the dumb things people do....or, for that matter, allow.

      The caretaker needs her business license revoked and closed down. She should go to jail, but you know the laws in this country, if you didn't see it happen and got money, you're OK by the courts! BS!!!!
