PITTSBURGH – Police threw canisters of pepper spray and smoke at anarchists protesting the Group of 20 summit Thursday after some marchers responded to calls to disperse by rolling trash bins and throwing rocks.

The march turned chaotic at just about the same time that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived for a meeting with leaders of the world's major economies.

The clashes began after several hundred protesters, many advocating against capitalism, tried to march from an outlying neighborhood toward the convention center where the summit is being held.

Police in riot gear stood guard near the protesters, who banged on drums and chanted "Ain't no power like the power of the people, 'cause the power of the people don't stop."

The hundreds of marchers included small groups of self-described anarchists, some wearing dark clothes and bandanas and carrying black flags and others wearing helmets and safety goggles.

Some held a banner that read, "No borders, no thanks." Another banner read, "No hope in capitalism." A few minutes into the march, protesters unfurled a large banner reading "NO BAILOUT NO CAPITALISM" with an encircled "A," a recognized sign of anarchists.

The marchers did not have a permit and, after a few blocks, police declared it an unlawful assembly. They played an announcement over a loudspeaker telling people to leave or face arrest and then moved in to break it up.

    • Why doesn't the Police attack the tea baggers with rubber bullets...Because they are afraid some crazy nut with M16 in the crowd might start shooting back at them...

      I wouldn't mind seeing that...

      @Dre

No the anarchists usually arent armed but there is a difference between peaceful protest and rioting. Damaging property and assaulting officers is rioting. Something such as say the Million Man March is peaceful protest.

Class into unavailable stats, but it would be interesting to know what percentage of violent rioters are but agent provocateurs who's only mission is to rationalize repression against demonstrators.

check this ugly little ditty as a proof of concept

    • WHAT? The police arrested people at a protest under Obama's watch?

      NEVER.

It doesn't matter if it's lawful or unlawful.....the fact is that police arrested people who were at a protest under Obama's watch. Someone stated that that wouldn't happen and yet....it has.

If they are not being violent and are not hindering access to areas that Citizens would like to go to, then by all means why bother them? Loud protesters...so what? As long as they keep their hands to themselves what's the problem?

I think people who protest are not the brights people, but I just dislike protest OVER ALL...period. I'm being really in general with this because I don't think protests do a lick of good for anyone.

Nice typical republican response. How does protesting not do any good? What did the Civil Rights Movement not accomplish anything?

Jeez and you say liberals are the sheep.

And yeah saying "somebody said..." is a retarded argument.

      And?

You cannot attribute the passive of the Civil Rights to protesting...because MLK jr. Spoke with many people without marching. Their Marching was a demonstration of power and solidarity and it was more for the people than it was to tell the Government anything.

Writing a simple letter to the White House to get what is you want and have thousands of others do the same would be far more effective than standing out in front of the white house and chanting like a cult person.

    • Every protest i find myself repeating the same thing , yet people still show up in civilian clothes.

BUY riot gear! Helmets , gas masks, shields, boots... the whole getup. Just like the police! Less injuries...

Don't forget the badge,' Citizen, whom do you serve?'

Why continually protest without riot gear when the 'authorities' show no hesitation to use riot protection on citizens in plain clothes? Symbolic gestures, peaceful protests are being directly assaulted by authorities even when the peaceful group stays within it's designated area... look at what happened today...Peaceful citizens in areas designated by authorities for protesting are identified by the media as 'anarchist' ( not protesting citizens) after what is clearly aggressive actions by 'po lice?.. has produced less and less 'fruit'..results are more important than symbols. Who would win a football game where only one team gets to use pads...every 'game'?

      Even the playing field!
