US to demand inspection of Iran plant within weeks

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration plans to tell Iran this week that it must open a newly revealed nuclear enrichment site to international inspectors “within weeks,” according to senior administration officials. The administration will also seek full access to the key personnel who put together the clandestine plant.

The demands, following the revelation Friday of the secret facility at a military base near the holy city of Qum, set the stage for the next chapter of a diplomatic drama that has toughened the West’s posture and heightened tensions with Iran. The first direct negotiations between the United States and Iran in 30 years are scheduled to open in Geneva on Thursday.

American and European officials say they will also press Iran to open suspected nuclear sites to inspectors, and to turn over notebooks and computers involved in suspected weapons design.

President Obama has repeatedly said Iran must show significant cooperation by the end of the year, establishing what officials say is effectively a three-month deadline for action.

    • Iran is already complying with both the UN and the IAEA, just like Iraq was doing before we invaded on the pretext of imaginary weapons of mass destruction from phony intelligence from Zionist extremists working for Israel.

    • I mean if a country is known for sending women to blow
people up & all kinds of things like that then what would you think they would do with Nukes ( strap on one & say there country is ready to go BOOM & take someone or country with it ) ?????? Now that has nothing to do with
the US sticking anything anywhere .

    • i agree that it should be looked into thoroughly but it isn't our sole responsibility to baby-sit the world. we have enough problems on our shoulders to take on other peoples burdens all the time. The UN should be babysitting and our government should be models of neutrality, respect and strength. Being the "leader of the free world" we should be known for being innovative not known for acting like we're in charge of keeping the world in line. you can't force people to change what they don't see is a problem you can only take charge of what is yours and provide a positive example of success.

    • I can't see why the US would want to inspect these facilities. If you would have the UN do it; fine.

And i believe that's exactly the statement Iran has made about this: UN is welcome to come have a look (at an not yet agreed date); but the US has no place here.

    • To those that think the U.S. could do anything to Iran, i say, my friend, you are hilllllarious. This is just a 'front'. Obama wants to come off stern, and needs the rest of the world to do the same on the issue of Iran creating nukes. But in reality, say that Iran openly displays that it does indeed have weapons of mass destruction and an assortment of nukes. No one could do anything besides sanction the crap out of Iran, which Ahmadinejad is not worried about. So this inspection is to get the gullible ones to worry that it means anything. The U.S. must learn it loses strength through the use of ammunitions and bloodshed. The U.S. will gain respect through respecting and recognizing the rights of others. So go ahead, look Irans nukes, tell them how ugly they look, it aint gonna bother them.

Actually, Bush would react to something like this by invading Yemen or some other country that had nothing to do with the infraction -- like invading Iraq in the face of a 9/11 attack that did not involve Iraq or even anyone of Iraqi descent...The invaded country would have to be a pushover, of course, Bush wasn't big on invading countries that could fight back...Funny, there is a word for people like that...no, it's not "cow," but I think the word STARTS like that...

you must also have liked president bush's tough but 'honest diplomacy' towards iraq. obama is delivering the same tired, jingoistic rhetoric of the previous administration.

Actually afloy, the only difference this time, even if Iran had Weapons of Mass Destruction, say they even had nuke, there is not much the U.S. or anyone could do about it. They could think sanctioning the crap out of them, but Iran is not phased by that. Obama ran on the platform that he would not make the next 4 years look like the last 8; the only reason that will be held true, is because the U.S. is flat broke from the last 8 years and couldn't handle going into any other wars. That is why Obama needs to end the two finish whats on his plate before going for more. This is more of a 'front' to the world that everyone should get hard on Iran about this issue, and we need everyone to back us up.
