White House lashes out at Glenn Beck, Fox News ‘lies’

Image
WakeUpPeople
In another sign that the Obama administration is increasingly willing to take on its media critics directly, the White House blog has published a comparison of Fox News “rhetoric” versus “reality” on the issue of President Obama’s support for Chicago’s Olympic bid.

The statement went so far as to use the expression “Fox lies.”

“Last night Fox News continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration’s efforts to win the Olympics for the United States,” the White House blog entry begins. “In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News’ Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings.”

Some Republicans criticized the president earlier this week for his last-minute plan to fly to Copenhagen to help Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. While some have accused the president of hometown favoritism, on Tuesday Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said the trip was a distraction from larger priorities; Sen. Christopher Bond (R-MO) said the president should stay in the US and focus on the war in Afghanistan.

Fox News’ Glenn Beck picked up and expanded on those talking points Tuesday night, and on Wednesday the White House responded with a scathing debunking of numerous points the TV personality made.

The statement attacked Beck for claiming that the Olympics cost the city of Vancouver $1 billion, pointing out that the Vancouver Winter Games haven’t taken place yet. It also took a Beck guest to task for claiming that Chicago has had to close its city government several days a week because of a fiscal crunch; “Chicago has had one reduced-service day in 2009, and will have two more on the Friday after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve,” the White House retorted.

The statement concludes: “For even more Fox lies, check out the latest ‘Truth-O-Meter’ feature from Politifact that debunks a false claim about a White House staffer that continues to be repeated by Glenn Beck and others on the network.”

The White House now appears unafraid to take on Fox’s controversial coverage of the Obama administration directly.

You said it so well with only a few words!
      Excellent!
I will now gladly quote what you wrote and I know it is true anyway, "FOX News is the most watched news network in America. FOX NEWS is the third most watched tv station on cable."

There, now all the screamers can see where so many millions of us are at.
Perhaps all the supporters of the purposeful dismantling of America, will pause and wonder if FOX NEWS appeals only to the ignorant or perhaps some people with open minds will wonder if maybe we know what they know plus a bit more.

That is the best video ever!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWu-efNN8PM
You are amazing. The person in the video openly and honestly expresses what so many of us keep bottled up inside! I am glad that someone has found a way to express himself and to get out deep feelings. I hope I too can be able to release mine.
      Thank you for inspiring me.
Thank you for giving me a chance to live vicariously through this guy's actions and words.
      AMAZING!!!
Thank you so much my friend!!

So corporations deciding who gets elected is preferable to the public making the decision?
Explain how that is democratic? You accept the status quo, do you?

"now, if the box had some more boxes next to it, even allowing me to choose a PARTY to whom the dollars would flow, i'd START to consider supporting such a thing."

The idea is that the money is distributed equally to all candidates, taking special interest money out of the equation and leveling the playing field for all qualified candidates and eliminating corporate influence, which is the root of the problem with this broken electoral system.
It's the one path to giving the people a voice in their own democracy. Unless you prefer the status quo of overwhelming corporate control of Congress.

I'd be in denial if I disagreed. Montreal just paid off Expo 67, what was it, last year? More than 40 years of debt.
Corporations make out like bandits but the region gets a 40 year tax increase and levies on everything. fuel, sin taxes, property taxes, you name it. Plus, the Olmypics is ultra corrupt. BUT, it will have a short-term benefit in job creation, which is much needed right now.
That said, it really is kicking the can down the road.
I'm afraid I'll have to side with the wingnuts on this one.
As for Becky's claim that Vancouver 'lost a billion', I doubt that it was intended as a lie, just pathetic research. he might have Googled it and discovered it's not till next year.
But nobody ever accused Gwen of actually being smart. He's a button pusher. Has been all his life. An ignorant little morning zoo DJ with a nasty history of some very cruel acts combined with severe substance abuse.
Not a lot different than Limbaugh, really, just chubby rather than morbidly obese.

What a pleasure to hear from the man of Truth!
I am not able to be as on top of things as you! But with your encouragement I will try!
Thank you for all the stuff we would never find on other "news" sources; Current has actually not held back in many ways. Sometimes they are really good about freedom of speech!
Even though Current seems to have a liberal bent, I must admit that most of the time they print it like it is, and that makes them more brave than other sources like MSNBC and ABC and NBC and CBS and The Slimes.
Please be patient with them. When the news of his false authorship hits the main media, I'll bet Current will reconsider what you brought out to all of our attention.
Birdmanbob4 you are the best, you pull no punches. You are especially tough when you come to the rescue of someone who is being bullied! That is the sign of a real hero. Current can never take that away from you.
You are not one of those fake heroes or one of those wannabes.
      You da man!!!!
Like you always say, "The truth will set you free!!!"
Thanks for all your hard work! Thanks for opening our eyes to the truth!!!

I sure don't ....After connecting to Brierbart from well before the election it has been like being in a time Machine... for way to long I knew about every major story way to long before it broke ...The crew at The b Cast got every single story months before the rest of the world second place was and is a long way off...and finally most of them became part of the National conversation "everyone" talked about. and after they did I could exhale. Current.com will allow a Terrorest to go on and on like he was Revrend Wright the day after 9-11 but the self loading video explaning "exactly" how Obama had Bill Ayres write his Book was to much and Current did a "EDIT" on all my video post's explaining in detail. I think I need a Vacation lol..But I can not think of a better man to take up the cause more than you!....You take the helm for a bit I need a rest...Obama or Radical friends of Obama are a Rabbit Hole with no end! You know how to get in touch with me!...Bob PS: my Doggy misses me! And the good news is America is awake!

    • Mr. Obama didn't go to lobby for the US. He went to get money for the Chicago Mob so he could pay them back for donating so much to his campaign and get money the real estate pals who lost money unless the Olympic Stadium opens right next to their buildings.
Also, each day, there is something new that we learn from the news about him or his policies. One day, one of us here on Current will have enough time to gather all the failed actions of this administration and enumerate them so we can read a real list.

    • I understand the response that it appears that the white house "finally grew some balls", but I don't agree. Rather, I think the White House has again lost track of some of the children in the administration. As I understand it, Glen Beck has revealed a number troubling things about the administration. By choosing to make hay of the fact that the Vancouver Olympics (that haven't happened yet) lost $1B (which is an obvious mistake), hasn't the administration admitted that everything previously pointed out by Glen Beck is accurate?

Again, I understand the statement about balls as that is a reasonable first impression, but peal the banana and I think the White House response is nothing more than another poorly thougth knee-jerk reaction. It is truly another sad day for the presidency.

Wow -- the anonomous Internet is reporting that Glen Beck is reporting "rumors"! How could I have missed that? Indeed, how could the White House have missed that as they have seen fit only to point out that it was the Calgary Olympics not the Vancouve Olympics, while remaining completely silent on all of these "rumors"?

I am continually shocked and amazed at how ideology blinds one to the truth, and instead leads us to the Internet to find what we want to see. Keep reading that Internet, as "the Internet will set you free"!

    • I get the liberal left message now that I have read so many comments here on Current.
The message is, if something good is happening it's because Mr. Obama did it. If something bad happens it's because Mr. Obama didn't have enough time to fix it because the Bush administration left such a mess.
In other words the liberal left has set it up so that Mr. Obama can never be wrong.

    • What a load of bullshit. It's not the job of Barack Obama or the White House to try to convince us that Fox News is lying to us. Is everyone too dense to see that the same corruption we all complained about during the Bush administration is happening to the same extent if not more right now with our current administration. The liberal agenda and the GOP agenda are ultimately the same. Why not get angry at David Letterman? His inability to ask Barack Obama serious questions about what he's doing with our country and softball jokester question's are just as radical as the bullshit Glenn Beck talks about on Fox News.

I have an idea. Why don't we all go out and learn something about what's happening in our country and the world instead of relying on the ultra-biased bullshit that the majority of the people in our country are spoonfed by these media outlets. It used to seem like the current community was progressive and somewhat unbiased, but it's becoming more and more clear that I might hear more intelligent and legitimate debate about current issues on TMZ.

As for the olympics coming to Chicago, it seems like none of you actually understand what goes on in the windy city. If someone expressed what I'm about to say, I apologize in advance for repeating it. I couldn't bear to read any more of the endless meaningless comments above. Chicago's politicians are extremely corrupt and the machine that has been running the city continually f***s us Chicagoans in the arse on a Daley basis. Every politician connected to the Daley political juggernaut is shady and any profits earned during the hypothetical Chicago 2016 Olympics will go right into their endlessly deep pockets like the rest of our money. Think about these things I have written.

We should have asked what kind of change we were voting for during the election instead of clusterf***ing one another in a mega-biased political deception orgy.

Obama is responsible for this. Ironically, there is intense and I have to say bitter and illogical criticism of Obama in his own country.

The world desperately needs the leadership of the US at this critical moment in history.

Nice to have you back on the same side as the good guys. That was a tough 8 years. But please, stop the irational sniping at Obama.

It's too bad there are so many ignorant followers of the media babblers (like Glenn Beck). Fox will continue to say whatever get's its ratings to soar. Fox doesn't care about politics, they are just a bunch of money whores.

I can't even count how many times I've seen a Fox "news anchor" shut down a perfectly reasonable response to one of their Hard Ball esk' questions/ debates by simply lying.

You just don't know what you're talking about. Writing the legislation is the job of Congress. Obama has made it very clear to anyone who will actually listen to him that there are objectives that have to be met in the bill in order for him to sign it into law. He is letting the Congress do its job in figuring out the specifics of how to get those objectives met.

These pundits' pockets are infinitely lined with cash from mega-corporate institutions that want to control our media into making the public believe that a more socialized government is harmful to the American people and they are willing to use any means necessary to fulfill that goal hence the ever popular, albeit crazy, Glenn Beck show. By no means do I find Obama's administration perfect, but I do applaud the White House for not backing down like previous Democratic politicians have to the pressures of an overzealous right wing media and really standing up for truth.

Besides, he has been busy with many things and he still finds time for this, that's not bad at all...I think.

Yet for the important things like Iran, you told Israel SIX months ago to leave Iran alone while you work on it. So now you have given them six more months to build their bombs and you still are giving them more time again. The next thing will be sanctions and that means they get even more time.

I think Glenn Beck is great.
Of course, all his 8 million fans and me included, are well aware that he purposely exaggerates to make a point sometimes, but most of the time, no exaggeration is needed.
Mr. Obama has taken this country away from us. He dislikes most of us. He apologizes for us all over the world. He is ashamed of us. He goes on daily explaining how bad we are. Meanwhile, he is showing off for Europe and Africa and South America and Asia.
Mr. Obama makes an ongoing mistake daily.
While he shows off to the world , he gains their respect and admiration. BUT!!! He also has lost OUR respect for him here at home.
Mr. Obama himself is the very reason that Glenn Beck is so popular.
      GLENN BECK, You da man!!!
Mr. Obama's hate of us and his shame about us, has created many new Glenn Becks all over the media.
Mr. Obama, we are not Europeans.
You are impressing them, but at the cost of losing us to your sacrifices to fame.
      We don't live in Europe.
We live here Mr. Obama, and your policies affect US.

Well maybe we should pass legislation requiring everyone to vote, you can even vote for none of the above. And we should pass the legislation with the provision if you fail to show at the polls for two consecutive elections we revoke your right to welfare payments or yor social security payments then we would see the far right anf the far left move closer to the center and we would have a government representitive of all the people.

    • Last Wed. Brierbart Broke a Blockbuster Story from a tip of mine. Now it is on British News, Canadian News, and all over the Internet and Raido............Who is Bill Ayres Obama's friend from the weather Underground http://bizarrereport.com/weatherunderground.htm........................ can any one figure out the odds a story about a River going both ways getting in to Obama's and Ayres Book?........................................................................................................... A newly discovered anecdote from Bill Ayers' 1993 book, To Teach, solidifies the case that he is indeed the muse behind Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father.

In the book, Ayers tells the story of an adventurous teacher who would take her students out to the streets of New York to learn interesting life lessons about the culture and history of the city. As Ayers tells it, the students were fascinated by the Hudson River nearby and asked to see it. When they got to the river's edge, one student said, " Look, the river is flowing up." A second student said, "No, it has to flow south-down."

Not knowing which was right, the teacher and the students did their research. What they discovered, writes Ayers, was "that the Hudson River is a tidal river, that it flows both north and south, and they had visited the exact spot where the tide stops its northward push."

In his 1995 book, Dreams From My Father, Barack Obama shares a stunningly comparable anecdote about tidal rivers from his own brief New York sojourn. He tells of meeting with "Marty Kauffman" at a Lexington Avenue diner, the man from Chicago who was trying to recruit him as a community organizer.

After the meeting, Obama "took the long way home, along the East River promenade." As "a long brown barge rolled through the gray waters toward the sea," Obama sat down on a bench to consider his options. While sitting, he noticed a black woman and her young son against the railing. Overly fond of the too well remembered detail, Obama observes that "they stood side by side, his arm wrapped around her leg, a single silhouette against the twilight."

The boy appeared to ask his mother a question that she could not answer and then approached Obama: "Excuse me, mister," he shouted. "You know why sometimes the river runs that way and then sometimes it goes this way?"

"The woman smiled and shook her head, and I said it probably had to do with the tides." Obama uses the seeming indecisiveness of this tidal river as a metaphor for his own. Immediately afterwards, he shakes the indecision and heads for Chicago.

Your assumption that everyone wants to be on one side, or the other is wrong, at least on my part. I truly wanted an ‘American Party’. One, which included a Democrat and a Republican, leading us out of the darkness. I wanted Al Gore and Chuck Hagel to work together to get America back on course. I hate divided America. I hate arguing with other Americans along party lines.
Divided we fall! Humpty Dumpty may never be put back together? But divided America is just wrong and we must work to find common ground and stop spinning division. ‘Spinning’ is the problem!

    • Both sides, Repubs and Dems, need to get over themselves. If you buy into the notion that one side is better than the other or that one is the lesser of two evils, then you and your willful ignorance are playing right into their hands and you are now part of the problem.

If you are a Dem, the Repubs are no longer in charge, yet there is no change. You blame the wrong side.

If you are a Repub, the Dems won the election, quit whining about birth certificates. Look inward and blame your own party for its own inadequacies.

    • I would -like- to think Obama would've stood up for any city's bid for the Olympics....but, jeez, that's the guy's home, he can surely be its #1 cheerleader. I am still torn as to whether addressing Beck and Fox was the ultimately right thing to do but sticking up for yourself, regardless of the situation, sets a strong example unto itself.

    • As long as spinning distortion is allowed, nothing can change. As long as people are allowed to lie on either side, no one can believe either side. I want media who seeks out TRUTH, not ratings, or political favor, TRUTH!

One thing I do know is, McCain/Palin would have been a disaster for ordinary Americans. Sarah Palin has already written a book titled 'Going Rogue'. 'Going Rogue' is not the leadership we need today. So I think her book speaks for it's self. McCain/Palin would have been a disaster. We have already had a President who was a self professed 'decider'.

I am going to correct it on my post, but I just wanted to thank you for the heads up!

    • The Dems don't need to stand up to Fox News just as the Repubs don't need to stand up to the NYT, the Washington Post, the La Times, the Chicago Tribune, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, etc. etc.

For those of you who "voted for change" what will it take for you to see that you got taken? How long will you allow Fox News to distract you from looking at the President's policies? Choose whatever issue is most important to you, name it, and then figure what change Obama has brought. You will be sorely disappointed.

    • To date the Democrats have failed to stand up against Fox News. If President Obama 'must' do it himself, so be it. But someone has to 'stand up' for those of us who voted for change.

One of the main changes I wanted was, to stop the spin machine of the right. I am sick of spin. One can not compete with spin, unless they call out the spinners. Call them out by name. Spinners should feel shame, not support. Spinning distortion is making people dizzy. There are not enough voices countering the spin with facts. Facts matter.

One would think other media outlets would counter the spin with facts. Unfortunately, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are the only ones willing to take on spin. Then along comes the right to spin, 'Keith and Rachel' are just spinning also. Facts be damned.

I don't want either side to spin distorted facts! I want some form of media, which I can trust! I want politicians I can trust! Has America progressed to the point where truth and trust are a thing of the past? That's not good for our government, or our people. TRUTH should be a requirement, not an option.

First the United States would have to be built on trust. It was not created on trust...so what do you expect. It's not like they trustfully took land from the Indians. It's not like they got an honest days work out of African Slaves. It's not like they brought trust home when they shoved Japanese into interment camps.

Trust is a fantasy and if that's what you're looking for you're on the wrong planet.

So, J_Jammer, what would you suggest? You are making points, which provide no answers to the problems. What do you think it would take for truth? Are no Americans to be trusted to tell the truth?

All the points you made about the Indians, the African slaves and the Japanese, are correct. They were atrocities. So, should we keep it up? Does more wrongs make it right? What is the end game for America? Is it too late to trust any American politician, or media outlet?

It's not an endgame for America...it's just an endgame for humans in general.

Men are riddle with problems of deceit no matter how hard they try. They become embarrassed or prideful or scared or excited and they do things that are mistakes and it damages more than just themselves. It's how it works for the average human and it's even more magnified for those that are leaders.

ANYONE can become President of the United States. There's no training. People believe the BS that dribbles out of a prospects mouth they'll follow them like little puppies and they'll vote with their little paws in the voting booth.

No training in how to deal with domestic affairs. No test to see if they know American history enough not to repeat past mistakes...NOTHING they just get tossed in.

What do you expect? People want Parents to have training but care not if someone becomes President with any training because of course anyone knows how to rule over 300 million people.

McCain wasn't wanted by the majority. It just so happens that not everyone votes, but that doesn't keep them from having an opinion.

If history is any indication of what humans can do with ruling over each other....then it's proof enough that it's just not possible.

    • Obama is the first President to go lobby on behalf of an American city to get the Olympics. If it were for a city other than Chicago, would he have as much interest. Will Valerie Jarrett personally profit from Chicago getting the Olympics in any way?

      WORST CITY in America.

They BEAT a teenager to death with wooden planks and he thinks that this is a great place for the world to see? There's more student deaths in Chicago than anywhere in the United States.

I can't believe they picked LA twice. Now they want Chicago?

If they go to Chicago before they go to more deserving areas in the WORLD....I will lose all respect for the Olympics. If they want black people go to Africa. Let them have the Olympics.

    • Wow, Obama has almost become taboo. You bring the man's name up and people will go off on him or his administration. Though, depending on where you live or what site your on.

Fox or as a hero of mine Obermann says 'fixed news' is a joke. Just like MSNBC, they are very on their own side and pitch to what their views want to hear. BUT, MSNBC whom Im a large fan of, does do fact checking, i think. And they have writers. And wit!

    • Perry_James in the person out of all of these comments that has something intelligent to say and actually understands what's going on here..... Did anyone actually see the Glen Beck show today?? I did. He's not lying about anything, you can double check his facts (which I like to do), and actually see that he's not crazy at all..... Ohh yeah, and he's not a Republican..... He's a conservative, which lot's of people have a hard time understanding that word nowadays without the stigma attached to it.

The difference between conservatives and Republicans is a hard sell. Good luck with that.

Honestly, are you saying that 'conservative' is a put-upon label? Go fuck yourself. Republicans and conservatives have been using 'liberal' as a naughty word for years.

I say Glenn Beck's show today. I'd describe him as a lunatic if he made anything approaching some basic goddamn sense. He doesn't, so he's just stupid.

He trolls IRL and makes a paycheck. So there's that.

    • Glenn Beck's reputation precedes him. You should watch his show. It's not about what Obama has done or not done, it's about a rabid TV personality who is getting a paycheck for whipping up the dumbs. I could debunk 90% of his nonsense with a pocket calculator, and I pay attention to politics maybe for an hour each week.

On one hand, yay for a Democrat President who takes these liars on, and on the other hand... please don't give them more things to scream about.

"...unlike CNN which invites a whole panel to discuss one topic for a half hour, but that's not saying much."

No, not really, when the panels consist of Mary Matalin debating her husband James Carville, or all the Republican douchebags like Bill Bennet, Lynn Cheney, Francis Townsend that they hire as 'political pundits'.

That said, they are light-years above ClusterFox which is *100%* partisan 24/7.
