David Letterman and his amazing 'little story'

And then for ten minutes, he told the story that had broken only a couple of hours before: that he’d been the object of an extortion attempt, and that “I have had sex with women who work on the show.” But before he said that he put it in the context of an odd, often humorously phrased anecdote, almost a folksy shaggy-dog story. **
**
Here’s the thing about that reaction: If you’ve ever been in a studio audience before, you know you’re almost hypnotized into giddy good humor. You’ve been standing on a line for hours, you’ve had a warm-up guy come out and joke and tell you what to expect (Letterman usually comes out and does his own warm-up bit, to the best of my knowledge). And we no longer live in a culture where, upon hearing something disturbing, people feel comfortable saying (not shouting), “For shame!” or quietly walking out. In any case, I’m sure everyone was just pretty stunned, and that some of the laughter was of the nervous sort.
In a sense, Letterman had a captive audience with which to frame his admission. But that said, this was an extraordinary piece of television. He took what could be a damaging scandal, a tale of blackmail and workplace relationships, and turned it into a story that was at least in part about what he termed his “towering, Midwestern mass of guilt.”
Letterman even managed to get in a few more mild jokes about it. “I know what you’re sayin’: ‘Oh, Dave had sex!’” — a reference to his age (62). And though he said he would not have more to say about it, when he came back from a commercial, he said he’d taken questions from the audience during the break and “a guy said, ‘I’d like to see that movie.’” More laughs. On with the show.
** My question to you is, why isn't the EEO doing something about this?? (Equal Employment Opportunity) What are they going to do with a "Boss" of a show, having sex with his employees?

That is a valid point. Though I don't believe Letterman was sexually harassing anyone per se, at least there is no evidence at all of such an occurrence to date, the point is that those with whom he was playing consensual hide-the-salami were in a position to benefit.
For example, at least one the women who he is known to be involved with made appearances on air for which ACTRA scale determines she would receive an additional check for several thousand $$, being a national show to say the least. Not every staff member makes on-air appearances.
So there are ethical issues. - 2 years ago

It's about sexual harassment in the workplace. The boss can't do the help without raising questions as to whether it was consensual or coerced to keep a job.

Letterman is a major hypocrite a'hole. How could he say those things about Palin's kid while doing this kind of thing? I hope he gets his rear sued off.

I just don't understand why people in the public eye take such chances! Now his public admission makes him look honest and forthright when all this time he's been deceitful and exploitative.

So Letterman admits sexually harassing and having sex with many of his staffers? How rich is that? Who can forget him making jokes about "knocking up" Palin's child? The wolf passing judgment on the lamb. The hatred of the good for being the good.
"This guy knows creepy stuff about me," Letterman said.Yeah, cuz you're a creep.
Imagine the besieged female staffers on the Letterman show -- a very coveted position (who wouldn't want that on their resume?) And Letterman, in exploitation of his power, abused and imposed himself as only a self obsessed lech can. Yech, imagine that slobbering all over you. I can only imagine the couple of female staffers that were not left-bots (in the closet of course) giving each other the sideway glances when he was ranking on Palin and her children.
What a P.I.G. These are our cultural icons? Is it any wonder we are in such deep doo doo?
"I was disturbed by this. I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family. I felt menaced by this and I had to tell them [the grand jury] all of the creepy things I had done," Letterman said.
When he finished, the audience burst into applause.
Burst into applause? Who are these people?
Is it any wonder that a Letterman would attempt to defile a Palin? Like the silver cross to Dracula. This is how the debauched left destroys America.

We are not our failings.
The measure of a person isn't that they fall but how they decide to fall.
Every single person has made a mistake and even though they may joke about other people's mistakes it's not a hypocritical move in totality. Hypocrites do things that they say are wrong and go about telling others why it's so wrong to do it and advocate for the "good" and then it comes about that they were doing "wrong" that they were stating was so terrible.
A hypocrite would be someone that is someone not paying $80,000 dollars in taxes and then become someone that is over taxes it self and tell others that they need to pay their taxes and then FINE them for not doing so.
What David Lettermen did was mock those that state a way of living is the right way and then it is shown that they were doing it the wrong way...He's never advocated for a right way of living and therefore cannot be labeled a hypocrite. He can be labeled many things like a poor boyfriend/husband and a selfish lover.....but not a hypocrite.

Hell no!! I wanted Clinton to continue doing his job. I believed him because he said he didn't. Good actor too!
but here are some of my reasons why his story is not the same as Letterman.
1. it wasn't several women that worked in the White House that he was having sex with.
2. It was one person
3. Yes it was wrong that he had sex with Monica, but he didn't come out and make a joke about it.
4. The only reason we found out is because other women came out and told on him.... - 2 years ago

KSirys:
He slept with many women while governor.
He had sex with her in the sacred office of the President of the United States...totally disrespecting the office with his debased practices.
He didn't admit to it. He denied it. He debated the meaning of "is"....he made a mockery of the entire United States because he let it go on and on and on.
David at least admitted to it and nipped it in the bud.

But you said it best, while being a Governor he fucked up. While being President, one time... Yes I agree with you that he disrespected the Office and the US. But make a mockery of the US because he tried to cover it up? nah.... he was just scared!

No J, we are missing the point here. If i had a business and my employees were having sex with me. Wouldn't that constitute in my business closing down? The work place is for work, not for sex! It's not allowed in the work place! I understand one relationship... but he clearly said, "it was several women" he had sex with.
Just for that, he should get fired. There's no possible way that this should be allowed!!

Is it that really cut and dry? Were you for one that wanted Clinton Impeached for having "sex" in the Oval Office?

Depends on how the relationship is...if he had any power in getting them fired as in directly instead of suggesting....then maybe there might be a problem.
It also depends on what kind of sex it was. If it was consensual then maybe there's not as big a problem as if they had the feeling that they HAD to have sex with him.
