I think the decision for Rio was made along time ago and it's really unfortunate or quite honestly sucks that the other city's had to invest so much money just to apply. The president and his wife made excellent speeches, but the vote was already decided long ago. Unfortunately USA is still hated throughout the world from the last 8 years . I saw both bid videos of Rio and Chicago, and quite honestly I thought Chicago was better. Doesn't matter much because USA doesn't really embrace the Olympic movement or real athletics. Were very much a country that loves the professional sports whether their athletic or not.Face it! If there was a world nascar race and Chicago could host it, there would have been 100% support for it. In my world that's sad, but that's America today.

It had more to do with how Atlanta and Salt Lake city handled their Olympics.

Amazing this gets more replies than anything posted about the climate bill in Congress. It surely shows people's priorities. I can't comprehend people getting this upset over games as opposed to a crisis that is changing the very face of our planet. Yes, it's an excellent choice, it's a beautiful city. Let's hope by 2016 the people of Brazil and other countries actually have the means to support such an event if something catastrophic doesn't happen first because people are too preoccupied with their political bickering to notice what is going on around them.
Watch as Australia gets pummelled by totally uncharacteristic dust storms, and typhoon after typhoon hits Asia, and drought in Kenya and other places kill livestock, agriculture, and people, and drought here becomes so bad the Colorado River doesn't flow anymore so food becomes scarcer and fires last an eternity... and then, by all means direct all of your energy to just using miniscule events to air partisan political hatred because it makes you feel better. No wonder Mother Nature has given up on us. We deserve it.
And considering this world does nothing but war and disrespect each other and this Earth, what true purpose do these games that started out as a show of brotherhood really accomplish? It's about THE MONEY as well. People in Chicago are crying because some games aren't coming there in seven years? Sorry, but there are many more important things they should be crying about. But I suppose it will take a catastrophe to get us to that point.

The improvements promised for the 2007 Pan American Games never surfaced, and construction for the twelve stadiums needed for the 2014 World Cup has not begun yet.
They have enough problems to deal with and now they must endure this pretext for gentrification.
This is unfortunate news for the people of Rio.

Congratulations, Rio. I was rooting for Chicago mostly because I wanted to attend the games and figured that would be the least costly destination. I wasn't jumping up and down about it because I had the sense that Chicagoans were in general somewhat ambivalent, given the obvious tax implications and the mayhem recently experienced by the folks in Atlanta. I figured Tokyo would be the LEAST affordable,,,but I honestly don't know much about costs in Rio. My main reservation about Rio is whether they can put their infrastructure together in time to effectively and efficiently move that many people between the airport, hotels and venues. But I know that they will work their butts off to make it happen. Its all good (except the morons who think that Obama should not have promoted a location in the country he leads, of course. Maybe those idiots can all chip in and purchase a clue...).

Anyone who's been to both Rio and Chicago would have voted the same way... And, that the Olympics have never been to South America made it an obvious choice.
How much did the murder of a Chicago kid and the treatment of foreigners while entering America have to do with it? A great deal, I suspect.

I wish people understood that Chicago is an absolute world class city. It isn't just the second city. It is the birthplace of the skyscraper, the haven for blues, and a sporting gem with two baseball teams, the Bulls. And lest we not forget, B Boy Bino White aka Joe Gets.

Well well....the great black hope didn't come throught this time. Obama is just a good man, who sometimes steps out there for us, but nothings set in stone or guaranteed as we would like it to be, being american. Let's remember how we've behaved over the last 8 years and ask ourselves do we really deserve this opportunity to host such a prestigious event on our shores. So white be polite, black push back, yellow stay mellow, and brown way to put it down.....congradulation

It was an uphill battle even for Oprah since the US has hosted the Olympics more than any other country with Summer games in 1904, 1932, 1984, 1996 and Winter games in 1932, 1960, 1980, 2002 so it was long odds that they would get it again so fast when this was the first time Brazil had the chance.

I'm kinda sad we didn't get it, but at the same time i'm glad we didn't because we couldn't have afforded this kind of event, and raising taxes wouldn't have been looked proudly on by the folks here in The Chi.
