Did Chicago lose Olympic bid due to US passport control?

Yesterday, Chicago lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics (which went to Rio de Janiero instead), and it's looking very likely that US border procedures were one of the main factors which knocked Chicago out of the race: 'Among the toughest questions posed to the Chicago bid team this week in Copenhagen was one that raised the issue of what kind of welcome foreigners would get from airport officials when they arrived in this country to attend the Games. Syed Shahid Ali, an I.O.C. member from Pakistan, in the question-and-answer session following Chicago's official presentation, pointed out that entering the United States can be "a rather harrowing experience." ... The exchange underscores what tourism officials here have been saying for years about the sometimes rigorous entry process for foreigners, which they see as a deterrent to tourism.-

earrachanam you said "Its odd that a lot of people seem to be making such a huge deal about losing this bid....yet as far as I can remember no one made this big of a deal when New York City lost the bid for the 2012 Olympics..." The big deal is the President and leader of the Free World back then did not risk the embarrassment by Pressuring Olympic Officials or stupidly try to influence them by bringing Opra ....The "One" is just another Number.....and the media told us fantasy that the World would LOVE us Americans more once Obama is in Power ...with his bowing down and giving up strategic missile defense systems is Poland along with saying how sorry he is for our past misdeeds only shows weakness to the sharks who want to deefeat the USA.......

The country is over run by illegal aliens, and foreigners with questionable legality flew planes into the World Trade Center, so if they don't like it, it doesn't bother me a bit.

Chicago lost it because the world, unlike the Americans, can smell the fetid, corrupt air of the city run by the Dem machine for over 50 years.

you reap what you sow America.I'm a Canadian just getting back from a Vegas trip...I will never forget walking through customs screening with my shoes and belt removed having to hold up my pants and face the grim faces and questioning of the security.A friend was pulled aside asked the same questions several times and electronically finger printed.I mean come on!

I understand that Chicago wasn't the best city for the Olympics, but i question the choice of Rio as the winner. I city that has such blatant inequality and degrees of violence is also a deterrent to tourism. While I am excited there will be a South American Olympics I feel that other cities on the continent could have served a better hosting sites.

I would assume that the Munich Olympic murders would provide sufficient support for enhanced customs and security procedures. To hear a representative from a Muslim country complain is ludicrous.

I think it was many factors. Tokyo, Madrid, and Rio banding together to push Chicago out because it was a threat to all three bids in a way that none of the cities was a direct threat to each other. The fact that the former IOC chair was Spanish. The fact that South America had never had the Olympics. The fact that The World Cup had been Awarded to South Africa and it was setting a trend for opening up new avenues for global sport. The increased security costs being most evident in America of all nations in a post 9/11 world. The constrictive passport and airport security measures not in place in the other competing nations. Blago. I mean there are plenty of things conspiring against Chicago.
One thing is certain. The IOC is off Oprah's favorite things list.

What's not to get ? the media told everyone that the Europeans are enamored with Obama. They lied Chicago came in last place on the first round. The posters of this are trying to spin it to some how say it was not Barak's fault...maybe Obama should have figured out this was the reason other Presidents did not "Put it on the line" was because this kind of thing could happen..very embarrassing.....Now how about listing to the Generals on the battlefield...give them what they need to finish the job...then listen to small Business People who in reality do the vast majority of the hiring, "Surprise that's not Government's job" and get America back to work...Obama has the Stimulus package set to really affect the economy right before the next two elections ...he thinks we wont find out what thats all about! If you think everyone is suppressed about the Olympic vote ...wait till the next two elections!

I hate the US airports. I'm american but I'm also Asian.
I was standing a few feet away from my mom, waiting for her to go through the customs line (i already went through) and then this Miami security women told me to stick close to my mom. (At the time I was 17 but she told me I looked 14)She made it sound like I was going to run wild in the airport. A complete pain and often insulting.

You know, it's a wonderful thing being a Canadian Citizen. At major airports, we have preclearance so our plane arrives as a US domestic flight.
Although you Americans need to train more cheerful people to work for the DHS. When I go back to Canada by car, people are always cheerful. When I'm driving pass the border, the US customs always seems like they're gonna tase someone.

I love Chicago, and being an Illinois resident I am a little disappointed that the games are not going to be there, but I don't understand why the media is making such a big deal about this. It's like they are saying America/Obama are failures for not winning the bid. Big freakin deal. I have been to Rio and it is pretty darn nice, and I think it makes sense to for them to host the games considering Brasil has never had the chance.

No, Chicago is not a sore loser. The majority of people who live here don't want the olympics. The city just sold all of its parking meters because it couldn't pay the bills.
Like a poor person going to the pawn shop, then inviting everyone over for the baddest party on the block. Chicagoans can breath a sigh of relief. No host city in modern history has even come close to breaking even on an olympic games.
As for Rio? The police there kill an average of 3 people a day & their poor don't even live in proper buildings, but shanty towns. 6&1/2 years to clean up the worst crime of any of the contending host cities. Hopefully Brazil is so welcoming to it's foreign visitors that they'll allow them to bring their guns to Rio... - 3 years ago

chicago is totally a sore loser, and brasil have held the PanAmerican games in rio before, and i dont see why olympic tourist would have any problem while they are there, just like any major city in the world you go into a dark street by yourself you are asking for trouble.

wrong... the last two summer olympics staged in the US had an incredible positive impact not only in infrastructure.. They were privately funded.. LA 84 and Atlanta 96 posted profits in terms of investment returns according to most olympic insiders and historians.

Rio a nice place for Brazilians, but a dangerous place for Tourists, 3 times more than Chicago.
US passport control, a major problem ,out of human reach. Most African countries have no electronic passport, how should they?
For the rest, US must change or people meet elsewhere.

I don't no man maybe because The folks here in the U.S. are spoiled and cry every time they don't get there way. I for one am glad for the people of South America. I believe it will slow down the people dieing to cross the border. I live about a hour and a half from mexico. they find dead or dieing people out in the brush all summer long. I wish I could go see the Olympics. but I can't Oh well maybe one day.
