I was 18 or 19 when I sampled my first toke. I'm going to be 61 later this month. I've waited a long time.
Folks from my generation have known all along the things said about the weed were incorrect. We've been vocal before, and smacked down before. This is the end of the game.
I say that because a number of things are different now than they've been over these decades. The majority of you here at current are representative of one major reason. You've swelled our ranks. Another is our most vocal opponets; "The old School", is now indeed old. Their ranks are being filled by my generation. Conclusion: more of us and less of them.
Because there's nothing wrong with it to be afraid of, and because there are so many of us saying this now, the reasoning for the prohibiton is crumbling under it's own weight. It's hard to defend a lie.
And then you have the folks with a medical need. The general public does understand pain; and has sympathy for those that suffer. Public outcry and testimony from these folks has made everyone aware that these people aren't being treated the way they should be. If pot helps them, then they should be able to get it. period. prohibition not withstanding. More and more that opinion is starting to prevail.
Because of the growing acceptance of marijuana for it's medical value, the public is witnessing first hand that all the dire predictions about legalized use are mainly hot air. Without intending to, these folks are helping recreational use right on along.
When you add to that America's current financial strain and looking for a way out of it; it's only common sense to do away with excess spending. Overfunded, failed programs are on the chopping block. In that respect our War on Drugs is singularily qualified.
And one can't overlook our massive amount of American green backs that are being used to to fund the problems of the Mexican people AND government. We're helping the enemies our of friends. And keeping those dollars at home doesn't sound all that bad.
So as an advocate; yea... I think the time is right. I think we're closer than we've ever been before. And I think we need to keep right on keeping on.

I just signed a petition at my school today for legalizing it. The same laws that apply to alcohol will apply to it, including the legal purchase age, which I do not agree with. I'm 19, and the only way I'd be able to get access to it is for medicinal purposes, which I could because I have Tourette's Syndrome and frequent anxiety attacks.

Silly pot heads. Don't they realize they're one of the reason that marijuana and therefore hemp production will not be legalized anytime soon. They scare soccer moms who probably secretly toke themselves. Really wish majority of america would get fed up with special interest holding marijuana down via politicians and get this thing done. 1st though take care of the whole universal healthcare issue.

ok honestly... if we really want cannabis to become legal we as a significantly large population of the united states, need to educate our neighbors on the truth's about the myths regarding cannabis.
if a person becomes educated about a subject they would be more inclined to make up there own opinion and decision as to whether or not something is good or not, and cannabis is a great subject to become educated on.
the more people that become educated on the truth about marijuana the more people will begin to see through the scare tactics that the opposition loves to use. that's not to say you should say cannabis is some miracle plant, tell people about the positives as well as the negatives and let them decide on that.
and you your self should become more educated on the subject of cannabis. for the simple fact that in a debate you can, in an intelligent and dignified manor, contrary to the opposition's accusations, not only defeat all points but educate the opponent at the same time.
education really is power and in this case it would be our greatest source of power to move forward, so go educate and get educated.

dude you speak the truth. education is key.
marijuana education should be put into action just like sex ed is. they are both two natural things us humans engage in and we need to be taught the good and bad.
but the common factor, they're both beautiful and beneficial and education will help us create outlooks of acceptance.
people today know the negativity of harder drugs and alcohol so they opt to stay away from it. they inform themselves on the good of marijuana and that's what they stick too.
we need to educate the truth that it's not a "gateway" drug and it's the individual that lets it overtake them, not the herb.

Oh yeah..legalize :) It's less harmful than cigarettes are for God's sake.. Weed is for the free-hearted, cigarettes and alcohol are for the trapped (As are hard drugs)

yeah I am not big on any type of recreational drug use but it seems like a huge waste of money and a total contradiction to allow cigarette smoking and beer and liquor sales every where all these laws have done is make criminals rich and put the lives of other at risk. I don’t drink I don’t smoke but I do take meds for Bipolar disorder that’s why I avoid this stuff but its just stupid to say pot is at the root of all evil. Frankly it seems that the more money we waste fighting it the more it cost to fight it and the more risk involved in getting it the more profitable it is for those ruthless enough to kill anyone in their way. while we spend all this money to keep kids off drugs but we don’t spend nearly as much on lets say education or better medical care for kids because its the lack of both that puts the "at risk kids" at risk
legalize it and you will see its use drop; cocaine was used even more after it became illegal because it became a status symbol this is the same thing the more illegal it is the more coveted it becomes. Spend money where the interest of the people are served that’s how you fight crime not with making everything illegal - 2 years ago

This article is more realistic about the legalization and how the public is viewing it through polls:

the legalization of marijuana is such common sense that it'll be academic by the time the healthcare industry allows congress to legalize it.

I agree with Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and John Adams.
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
- George Washington, U.S. President"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
- John Adams, U.S. PresidentIt's time to stop the 'Reefer Madness', it's no longer acceptable for our elected officials to 'pretend' they don't know. If they don't know, they should no. It's time to hold them accountable for 'not' knowing.
The actual uses for cannabis hemp are too important to ignore. Hemp is 100% biodegradable. Can we afford to let them keep pretending they don't know? 'Hemp for Victory' was a real documentary. Why not talk about it?

Not so fast my brothers and sisters, we all know how the government likes to keep ridiculous laws on the books to blackmail us into submission if we start pointing out other bad laws and infringements on citizen's freedoms. Drug, tax, reproduction and marriage laws are there to keep us from really working on the big violations of freedom, theft and general mismanagement perpetrated every day by our government.
Of course marijuana should be legal. That is a no brainer. Keeping it illegal just gives the government more power over you if you partake.

Thats not a nice thing to say acontradiction, I smoke weed and I pay all my own bills, I maintain fulltime employment and then some and I have for 30 plus years now. I have never been unemployed or taken 1 dollar from the government in the form of any aid what so ever. I am a contributing member of society and if I want to take a seed, grow a plant and use it, I should be able to. And you should hope I, and others like me, continue to do so. I am one of the people that grows the food you eat every day by taking seeds, sticking them in the ground, growing plants and using them. I would have to figure you don't have any trouble with that now do you?

As a person with a California 215 card due to a bad accident I had and the years of drug use for pain my liver is shot. The use of cannibis has been a godsend to me. It is safe. And no I am not lazy and niether is the majority of the people that use it. I pay alot of taxes and still work a hell of alot. I see kids smoking ciggs and drinking and I would prefer my kids to smoke cannabis than smoke ciggs or drink.

@acontradiction:
bullshit! why must it be only stereotypical pot-heads (that exist only in stoner movies) who support legalization. You would think anyone who cares about freedom would support it, and denounce the war on drugs that imprisons people for what they choose to do in their spare time. Not only that, but if you care to do the research, you will learn that it was unconstitutional to make it illegal in the first place. That's why they did it in a round-about way.
Also, with such propaganda as "Reefer Madness" and claims that smoking pot will make you insane and will make you murder people. It's all based on lies. Also, one of the main reasons why it remains illegal is because of the powerful tobacco and alcohol lobbies.
So anyone who values freedom, who is against their government lying to them, is against jailing people for what they do for recreation without hurting anyone else (America is the number one jailer in the world - fact), is against this war on the American people, etc, etc should be for ending marijuana prohibition.
There are so many reasons, there is no way I can do them justice in just one comment.
Also, like maof4brats and ihatethemall, I smoke too and I am far from your stereotypical view of stoners. I have a very successful career. I have written 2 books on computer programming. I pay my bills and taxes, and also never received any welfare or anything like that. Your opinion is just flat out wrong. It's hard to blame you with all the misinformation out there, but that's why we are correcting you.
Opposition to ending marijuana prohibition is still based on falsehoods, exaggerations, and stereotypes. We should evaluate this on its own REAL merits. I have done so, and like many others, I have come to the conclusion that ending marijuana prohibition is the answer. Part of promoting that is dispelling the lies we have been pummeled with (after school specials, etc). I hate when one side of a debate doesn't even argue in the realm of facts.

you're pretty damn judgemental. you can't say that just the "pot-heads" want it legalized.
THE MEDICAL BENEFITS ARE OBVIOUS AND SUPERIOR TO WHAT MOST OF "MODERN" MEDICINE CAN BRING US. people use it to help them and want to be able to do it freelylike a lot of other people responding here, you can keep it as a simple activity in your life and not let it overtake you and make you a "loser", like portrayed in film.
everyone i know who smokes has a desire to to be successful, they work towards their goals, and they have more sensibly realistic intelligence than the average person who accepts the information given to them by mainstream media, modern medicine, and their not-so in-depth education.weed smokers are not pathetic losers and people like you basing your opinions on stereotypes and ignorance are holding us back. educate yourself some more and stop paying attention to those "above the influence" commercials.
