Family Says 911 Tape Caught Cops Planning Cover-Up After Shooting

A homeowner says a Phoenix police officer shot him six times in the back during a 911 home-invasion call, and the 911 tape recorded the officer's partner saying, "That's all right. Don't worry about it. I got your back. ... We clear?" The family says the officers were not aware that the 911 call was still recording as they spoke about covering up the shooting.

In their complaint in Maricopa County Court, Anthony and Lesley Arambula say an armed intruder "crashed through the front window" of their home on Sept. 17, 2008 and ran into one of their son's bedrooms.

Anthony, worried about his son who was still in his bedroom, says he "held the intruder calmly at gunpoint" and called 911.

Phoenix Police officers already in the neighborhood heard the crash of the Arambulas' window. When they approached the house, Lesley says, she told Sgt. Sean Coutts that her husband was inside holding the intruder at gunpoint. Lesley says Coutts failed to pass on that information to the two other officers.

Inside the house, the Arambulas say, Officer Brian Lilly shot Anthony six times in the back while he was still on the phone with the 911 operator - twice when he was on the ground.

The officers ran into the bedroom after Anthony told them, "You just killed ... you just killed the homeowner. The bad guy is in there."

The complaint states that Officer Lilly "admitted that it was only after Tony was laying, bullet-ridden, on the ground that he assessed the situation. The 911 tape continued to record what happened even after Officer Lilly unloaded his weapon into Tony, including Officer Lilly's post-shooting, one-word 'assessment': 'Fuck.'

    • I'd like to (yawn) at stories like these that typify many communities' relationship with the police, however that might wrongly convey that I don't care.

Agree that it shouldn't be projected at all those in uniform, but for different reasons than a previous commenter. Would be good for people to study the history of the modern day police and then add on what their experiences are - to avoid shock and confusion...

    • See, this is exactly why your supposed to shoot any intruders right away.

ONLY YOU can eliminate the threat of being shot.

    • Arizona is a rogue state. Unfortunatly my surprise is that the cop was even investgated to begin with, but I guess with the help of the 911 tape they couldnt sweep this one under the rug like they do so many other things. Just last week there was an article in the Mohave Daily News how an off duty sherriff held a 14 yr old kid in submission after throwing a skittle at another kid sitting in the bleachers at a football game. If the local law enforcment acts like that off-duty, I can only assume how they perform under pressure in dangerous situations.

    • "Lesley says Coutts failed to pass on that information to the two other officers."

Communication breakdown. An unfortunate error that only a fool would project onto all police officers.

    • Please don't anyone tell unimatrix0, she will say it was the fault of the homeowner for protecting himself against the bad guy and holding him at gunpoint to protect his family.

    • That is truley a conspiracy. We in LA have had 14 officer shootings 5 have been found wrong by the police. No gun on suspect. Innocent people are being shot. The person in the home robbery wasn't right but to shoot 6 times is just pain wrong.

Well I'm not necessarily ready to put on an aluminum hat just yet. Yes I believe this happens a lot more than we will ever hear about, but I don't think that there's some cabal of police shooting people for whatever reason. Cops are people, people with more power than most of us e.g. guns and as people are wont to do they behave idiotically more often than not. That said I wouldn't feel all to bad if six holes were conveniently placed into that officer as well. They shoot a guy and try to cover it up. Heavens to Murgatroyd!
