A major health care reform bill has moved through committee and we can expect debate on the floor of the Senate soon. Variations of health care reform are moving through the appropriate steps in the House. Despite some well publicized and unnecessary ugliness, the democratic process is working just as it should.
I for one would like to see a public option. I support almost all of the ideas posed by the Democratic leadership and I hope that the final product reflects as many of those ideas as possible. However, this is not a society of one, or of one party. Partisanship is good in that it forces discussion, draws out new ideas and although not everyone's ideas get implemented, at least most ideas get heard. Democracy will not give you everything you want all the time, but it gives you a voice.
I feel confident that something close to Senator Baucus' bill will be passed in Congress and signed into law. While I will mourn the loss of a public option, at least it will be more significant heath care reform than we've seen in decades. It will not fix health care, but it will be a big step in the right direction. Then perhaps we can focus on a public option as the next step. Let's call it "Health Care Round 2."
