Did they really send a missle to the moon? How do we know? What did we see when they said they were successful? Hmmm..... Have we heard anything more about it? They should of never sold the building where they filmed the first steps on the moon, they could of used it for a moon blast!

The trend of this thread ---REALLY IS--- toward anti-tech idiocy and "science fear". With a "friendlyliberal" crowd like this,...who needs fascist/theocratic superstitious conspiracy theorist conservatist "enemies". DAMN! McCain is ACTUALLYstarting to look GOOD in comparison,.... like the "noble worthy foe"; at least as a pilot HE is O.K. with flight and missiles! This makes my head hurt.

If any aliens are receiving this message we do NOT blow up everybody we find who we think might have water. We have too many other and much better reasons we always have reasons.
They're always real good reasons. It's our way.
They're always real good reasons. It's our way.
They're always real good reasons. It's our way.It used to be we had to have a Biblical reason but we've progressed way beyond that now.

WTF people? It's not a bomb. It's a satellite that has been in orbit around the moon for some time.
This is the final stage that is going to kick up some dust from an existing crater. If this thing could even remotely impact the moon's orbit we would be in serious trouble as the moon routinely gets hit.
As usual people are letting fear and ignorance get the best of them. Reacting, yet again, to another over sensationalized headline.
Fear terrorists, fear scientists, fear corporations, fear you neighbor, fear nature, fear god. I'm sick of all this fear.

GAH! They are not bombing the moon. LRO / LCROSS will certainly impact the moon, but no explosives are on-board. It will just be a high-speed impact to try and detect water. The media is making it sound like we're sending up nukes, missiles or other large explosives but that simply is not the case. This is an amazing experiment that could start to allow humanity to visit the stars, forever altering our future. I know that sounds overly dramatic, but it is pretty freaking cool stuff!

They are going to mess up the orbit of the moon. then we will have all kinds of things go wrong here on earth. get ready folks the people in charge are going to kill us all one way or another.better yet why waste money on space crap if we take care of what we have here being here is great for what was spent on this crap we could have saved a millon people here on Earth. I think it is all a waste of money that could be put to better use else where. Thats all I don't really beleave it will cause the moon to jump out of orbit. I just don't under stand with all that is going wrong. why waste the funds to find water on the moon. when millons are dieing of thirst here on Planet Earth. I just don't under stand folks?

Some of the comments here are dumber than usual.
For one, the impact of this probe is insignificant compared to the history of impacts the moon (and every other body in space) has. It's covered in craters.
It's also a cost effective means of analyzing the surface composition. The impact "bomb" is really a satellite that after service in it's prior role is being crashed into the surface -- reuse for cost effectiveness.
My final point, poor people can study hard and get jobs in science and engineering if they so choose. Why deny poor people that choice to explore the universe in which we live?

Again, setting aside Saladin's marvelous use of reasoning, let's consider a couple of basic facts.
Besides the treaty that the US, and NASA is clearly breaking. No surprise to NATIVE AMERICANS of course.
NASA has a history of accidents on launch pads. So the clear and present danger of the results of such a failure, with a bomb on board is rather obvious.
Add to that the fact they plan to orbit the damn thing around the Earth for awhile before sending it off to blow up on the moon, presenting a possibility for it hurtling back to Earth, to explode on any given nation. The international incident that would evoke is not something we would likely forget for generations!
I guess no one remembers the international stink from China's anti-satellite missile test in 2007?
Let me point out the final sentence from the article linked here.
"The United States objected at the time, saying the 1967 Outer Space Treaty provided sufficient guarantees against weaponization in space."

Saladin's voice of reason aside, let me point out an obvious fact that everyone seems to be forgetting:
Article IV
States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the Earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner. The Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military maneuvers on celestial bodies shall be forbidden. The use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited. The use of any equipment or facility necessary for peaceful exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies shall also not be prohibited.
Testing any type of weapons on celestial bodies shall be forbidden.

money spent on space doesn't go on the ship into space, silly. it is spent on; workers and materials right here and that money is spent on many things (yes candy bars too) and then it is spent again and again making the economy work. space exploration is important as america will be one solid city in 6 generations. - 2 years ago

@ Saladin (and yes men)
Wow someone thought they were going to blow up the moon? Can you point out to me who that that was because I didn't see that comment.
I also found no mention of a "waste of time".
Now there were a few mentions of wasting money. Which didn't involve a knowledge of science (something else you were complaining about commentators not having), they just needed a vague understanding of economics; and they were correct it is wasteful.
Here something scientific; if the children aren't educated there won't be more scientists.
If tax payers money keeps going to bullshit, instead of important things like education (which in time would improve the economy); the whole future of this country is in peril.
There are WAY more serious issues; the economy, health care, education, etc., etc......
And if several shorted sighted egg-heads from NASA, think that water on the moon is more important than the future and stability of his country; that's embarrassingly stupid....
And because these people at NASA have life in a blender, and are supposed to be so educated yet lack common sense. I figured I'd emphasize education...
Gonna search for life on the moon, when that funding could be saving lives on Earth...

It is ironic that someone with the name spacemikey is talking about cutting the funding for NASA and I would have to agree that I don't share you values either. I would much rather have the measly 18 billion going to scientific advancements. 18 billion really is NOT that much in the grand scheme of things.
If you want to argue about saving money then argue to stop the war or stop defense spending which is upwards of 600 billion (rough google search). basically argue for what is significant--this is not.

They're not blowing up the moon geniuses. They're testing for something.
Read the article.
And if you're too lazy to do that, take a gander at the moon. Do you see those GIANT fucking holes? Those are called -craters-. They are the product of massive asteroids more powerful than dozens of nuclear bombs.
Do you -seriously- think that tiny probe testing for water is going to damage the moon in light of the massive attacks that rock has suffered for the billions of years it's been around?
You might as well think a missile would destroy our planet, it's equally stupid.
Talking about science requires a basic knowledge of science, -criticizing- science requires a more extensive knowledge.
But if you know -nothing- about this at all and talk about this mission being a waste of time and "dangerous," you're fair game for ridicule and scorn. You might as well yell at your car mechanic for taking off a flat tire or burst into a surgeon's operation and demand to know why he is cutting a human being open.
It's embarrassingly stupid.

I don't want to make a big thing out of this but they didn't find water, they detected it using infrared sensors. Or more specificly they detected hydrogen and hydoxyl (H and OH) concentrated in the same areas and infered that it must be water. My point is we havent actually collected any lunar water samples.

Indeed Darevalo,
Science and exploration waits for no one. Sure things (cough... economy) aren't looking so hot but that doesn't mean we put everything else on hold in the meantime.
Rock on NASA!

its nothing but science and exploration.
which is kool.
finding water on something like the moon gives us a glimmer of hope there is water else were we may find.
which is also kool. (cause acording to manbearpig guy we only got till 2050, and the aztects apparently say 2012, some dumbass thought 2000 but they were wrong)
yeah, we could spend money on other stuff.. but guess what.. TOO LATE HA!

The Indians already found water on the moon.
I guess it wasn't there when we first went.

Correction: India detected massive amounts of hydrogen under the surface. No one has actually found water yet.

I wonder how far the NASA budget could go as far as; sheltering the homeless, or improving public education? The vast majority of projects NASA works on are only of interest of those that are very rich. Nobody else could apply the information they are obtaining.
There are so many other things the tax payers money could go to. We're increasing the amount of stupid things we do in space, while simultaneously cutting school board budgets across the country?
Between NASA and the cost of these needless wars, no wonder China practically owns us. I'm surprised the country isn't completely bankrupt actually......

NASA/propulsion rockets are a smokescreen to make everyone think we're moving ahead at Plodding Speed. A big shockwave is coming. You've heard how UFO's stop and start on a dime? That's from having a dual system.
A combination of gyroscopes will hold it completely still in the sky while the other system gradually spins up to recharge. When moving time comes it hits real hard => instant acceleration.
That's what people are expecting to happen when we "attack" our own Moon, expecting a fleet of ships to intercept and protect their underground lairs.

wow i can think of maybe a hundred reasons not to do this. chief among them is that it's a colossal waste of money.
can we please get a petition going to stop these idiots spending our perfectly good money to bomb the EFFING MOON? how about we stop funding nasa all together, until we have earth sorted out. a small fraction of the money we spend at nasa could fund all the observatories we need to monitor space for decades.

I take a different view. It is the "landing" to the moon 30-40 years ago drove America's technological innovation, and the nation's interest to pursue Science & Technology education....look at now, how many kids are enrolled in science and engineering education in colleges? US' kids math level are 114th place compared to the rest of the countries. Young people don't even know how to calculate anymore.....it is better to make this "moon" thing a "fashion" statement for science/technology, than big bucks spent to be cool in sports/entertainment!!!!
