Sumo Champion Raises Arms and Shocks Crowd!

Standing with his fists clenched and arms aloft, sumo wrestler Asashoryu's celebration after beating a bitter rival would be considered fairly restrained in most sporting arenas.

But the "bad boy" of Japan's sumo world is in hot water with the sport's elders who considered the gesture to be "intolerable" and not in keeping with the ancient sport's gracious traditions.

Asashoryu, who holds the title of yokozuna, the highest rank in the sport, defeated fellow Mongolian and bitter rival Hakuho in the play-off bout to decide the winner of the tournament on September 27.

The win came as a surprise as Asashoryu – whose name translates to Blue Dragon of the Morning – had not won the last four tournaments and had been defeated by the same wrestler already the same day to force the showdown bout.

Clearly delighted with the result, he raised both arms in the air, turned and smiled at the crowd.

The response from the very traditional Yokozuna Deliberation Committee was shock and horror and they promptly issued a warning for unsporting and dishonourable behaviour.

Claiming that Asashoryu's actions lacked the dignity required of a grand champion, committee member Makiko Uchidate claimed, "such impolite actions by a yokozuna, who is the top-ranked wrestler, are intolerable."
