10) MARIJUANA USE HAS NO EFFECT ON MORTALITY:
A massive study of California HMO members funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found marijuana use caused no significant increase in mortality. Tobacco use was associated with increased risk of death. Sidney, S et al. Marijuana Use and Mortality. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 87 No. 4, April 1997. p. 585-590. Sept. 2002.
9) HEAVY MARIJUANA USE AS A YOUNG ADULT WON'T RUIN YOUR LIFE:
Veterans Affairs scientists looked at whether heavy marijuana use as a young adult caused long-term problems later, studying identical twins in which one twin had been a heavy marijuana user for a year or longer but had stopped at least one month before the study, while the second twin had used marijuana no more than five times ever. Marijuana use had no significant impact on physical or mental health care utilization, health-related quality of life, or current socio-demographic characteristics. Eisen SE et al. Does Marijuana Use Have Residual Adverse Effects on Self-Reported Health Measures, Socio-Demographics or Quality of Life? A Monozygotic Co-Twin Control Study in Men. Addiction. Vol. 97 No. 9. p.1083-1086. Sept.
1997
8) THE "GATEWAY EFFECT" MAY BE A MIRAGE:
Marijuana is often called a "gateway drug" by supporters of prohibition, who point to statistical "associations" indicating that persons who use marijuana are more likely to eventually try hard drugs than those who never use marijuana - implying that marijuana use somehow causes hard drug use. But a model developed by RAND Corp. researcher Andrew Morral demonstrates that these associations can be explained "without requiring a gateway effect." More likely, this federally funded study suggests, some people simply have an underlying propensity to try drugs, and start with what's most readily available. Morral AR, McCaffrey D and Paddock S. Reassessing the Marijuana Gateway Effect. Addiction. December 2002. p. 1493-1504.
7) PROHIBITION DOESN'T WORK (PART I):
The White House had the National Research Council examine the data being gathered about drug use and the effects of U.S. drug policies. NRC concluded, "the nation possesses little information about the effectiveness of current drug policy, especially of drug law enforcement." And what data exist show "little apparent relationship between severity of sanctions prescribed for drug use and prevalence or frequency of use." In other words, there is no proof that prohibition - the cornerstone of U.S. drug policy for a century - reduces drug use. National Research Council. Informing America's Policy on Illegal Drugs: What We Don't Know Keeps Hurting Us. National Academy Press, 2001. p. 193.
6) PROHIBITION DOESN'T WORK (PART II):
DOES PROHIBITION CAUSE THE "GATEWAY EFFECT"?): U.S. and Dutch researchers, supported in part by NIDA, compared marijuana users in San Francisco, where non-medical use remains illegal, to Amsterdam, where adults may possess and purchase small amounts of marijuana from regulated businesses. Looking at such parameters as frequency and quantity of use and age at onset of use, they found no differences except one: Lifetime use of hard drugs was significantly lower in Amsterdam, with its "tolerant" marijuana policies. For example, lifetime crack cocaine use was 4.5 times higher in San Francisco than Amsterdam. Reinarman, C, Cohen, PDA, and Kaal, HL. The Limited Relevance of Drug Policy: Cannabis in Amsterdam and San Francisco. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 94, No. 5. May 2004. p. 836-842.

My comment was meaning no disrespect to Ronald Reagan and his passing. Ronald Reagan should not have been afforded the luxury of the lie. He should have been held accountable on the spot. The fact that he choose to say the lie should have been news. When facts and lies are hidden, how can people know the truth? Start holding people accountable, when they misstate facts in your presence. Don't let people lie. Granted some have been misled and don't know they are repeating a lie. Don't get mad, educate! Explain how they are misguided. Jack Herer's site is a great place to gain information about cannabis hemp.
Hemp is as important as cannabis! Hemp has limitless possibilities in industry. Hemp was used in the past, it has real positive history. With today's technology, I think the sky is the limit. We need industry! Our environment needs environmentally friendly industry! Hemp has great possibilities. Now is the time, before all the stimulus money is gone. Green hemp industry, sounds good to me.

Assholes that lie and say shit like "I am completely certain" especially while in the position of authority have your respect????????
That's the trouble. There's been no president except Jimmy Carter, that's been honest in my lifetime, but my fellow americans are too cowardly to do the right thing. Liars in high places need to be taken down, they are the lowest scum imaginable. Corruption that eats the very fabric of society. That is why this country is failing and will continue to fail, because the American people have become stupid sheep. They are getting what they deserve actually. All is just right. Stupidity is painful and it should be. :)

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marihuana." - Jimmy Carter, U.S. President

Ronald Reagan was afforded the luxury of a lie and no one held him accountable.
"I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast" - Ronald Reagan
I agree with Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and John Adams.
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
- George Washington, U.S. President"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
- John Adams, U.S. PresidentHistory, which is being ignored! It's sad really, our elected representatives are ignoring the voices of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams and listening to the madness of Ronald Reagan. Whether one supports Ronald Reagan, or not, that comment is a lie. A war on Americans, on American soil should not be based on any lies! If the war is not based on fact, the war should end! Cannabis hemp should be re-classified!

First off I smoke me medicine everyday. But realistically hemp or any other biomass will not solve our energy issues.
Most modern large scale processing facilities need to run year round for economic reasons.
Annual fiber crops, like hemp are harvested over a short period of time when the product is "ripe." This creates two issues: a peak in demand for harvesting labor, equipment and transportation, And a need for facilities to store the harvested crop. Perishability will require these facilities or the loss of crop must be taken as a part of doing business. This combined with fluctuating market cycles, provides some serious economic setbacks.
Annual cropping of fiber crops includes a regime of planting, heavy fertilizer and herbicide use, followed a few months later by harvesting. The land is typically left bare until spring, unprotected by vegetation during the winter due to the pesticides and herbicides. Running the heavy equipment twice a year doesn't help that much either!
Using hemp to make fuel and paper, nay. As a medicine Yay.
Im not really sure what the answer is to the energy problem... to me nuclear looks decent with electric cars.

Hemp is one of the fastest and cheapest renewable sources, look up info on its germination, it grows like a weed ( no pun intended) and can be harvested multiple times a year without use of herbicides or fertilizers. It's almost too good to be true, yet it isn't true because its illegal.

guys, I can appreciate your sentiment. But when it comes to law enforcement, you're missing the point. Having spent some time in prison for this shit, as well as being arrested more than once I have some small experience in this.
Sure. There's always some rotten apples in the barrel. And some officers get downright abusive in the performance of their duties. But to want to hurt these folks - or make them suffer isn't right - or fair.
They don't make the laws; they just enforce them. Not always even handed, but mainly. Ever time an officer screws up anywhere in the country seems like it ends up on Current. It gives the wrong impression.
While I have no abiding love for police officers, and frankly prefer to keep my distance from them, none the less I respect what they do and appreciate the difficulty of it. These are the folks that will lock you up for toking, but they're also the folks you call when somebody is breaking into your house or if a wacco is walking the neighborhood with a shotgun.
That's a job I wouldn't take on. I prefer to work where getting home this evening in one piece isn't a question mark. We need to hold them accountable for what they do, that's only right and fair. But as an institution, I think we're far better off with them than we would be without them. I have no desire to walk around armed or keep a pistol in reach at home.
There's a degree of comfort knowing that if the shit hits the fan a phone call will bring bad asses out of the woodwork to help you handle it.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

funnicus, like it or not, the police are upholding the law when it comes to cannabis. They did not classify cannabis equal to heroin and cocaine, Richard Nixon did. Richard Nixon did it for political gain. It's fact!
I don't want to become lawless, whether cannabis is legal or not. If police commit crimes, they should be punished. Not every police officer in America. The law needs to be changed, so ordinary Americans are not criminals, due to the bad judgment of a president who left office in shame. Richard Nixon left America in shame, but our shameful politicians followed his lead and used it as a political tool.
What would it take for shame? We honestly know cannabis hemp should not be illegal. Our current representatives choose to stand behind a president who left office in shame. Sad, sad, sad. One would think they would want to be above that?

"The Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer was my eye opener. I was already in my 30's before I found out the facts. Jack's book is full of information and documentation to back it up. Once one learns the history and the facts about cannabis hemp, one can no longer be spun with distorted facts. It's an "Assault on Reason" and it's an assault on us. Laws should not be based on distorted facts. If the laws can not stand on truth, the laws should not stand. The facts are out there! Cannabis hemp should be re-classified.
Politicians should be shamed when they spin cannabis facts. They know! Spinning distortion is not the representation we are paying for. Corporations may pay them to spin, but we VOTE expecting honesty and truth. Without our votes, corporations can not get any one elected. Let's start holding people accountable for spinning distortion!
It's time to end the un-just war on cannabis hemp!

Ordinary Americans are finally finding out, they have been misled. Cannabis hemp facts were removed from educational material. The history of cannabis hemp was hidden from view, while politicians spun the 'war on drugs'. Many people did not know cannabis hemp had history. Productive history. The documentary 'Hemp for Victory' is real, 'Reefer Madness' is not.
It's time to end the 'Madness' and move on to 'Victory'. Our environment and our economy are in terrible shape. Cannabis hemp could help both, our economy and our environment. I'm not really talking about taxation. Hemp has so many environmentally friendly industrial uses, it could stimulate our economy for years, just researching the possibilities of new environmentally friendly products.

Oh wait did I say "stockholm syndrome" I meant "treatment. Oh same thing. Cops bat thieves to blame the drugs in return the thieves get revolving door access via treatment etc, and the cops get to use these valuable "statistics" to promote their job security "war on drugs". Which paved the way to the other stupid USA wars on inanimate objects etc.

I understand there has been much research done that wasn't funded, in part or entire, by our govt. that has reached similar conclusions. As Connie pointed out, they can't NOT know. They choose not to know.
I've written both my senators and while the younger Sen. was more receptive than the older, I got the std. party line from both. I no longer think our representatives reluctance to address this has much to do with right and wrong. It has to do with political reality. Damn politics again.
These folks want to be reelected. Because SO many of our citizens have no personal experience they tend to believe the falacy that the Fed. has woven around this. They're against it - but with no evidence to support that position - other than what the fed has given them. Our representatives know this. To come out in favor of an issue that doesn't enjoy popularity in your state is to commit political suicide.
What to do? Keep on talking. I'm 60 years old and have been an on/off toker for 40 years. I'm an example of what doens't happen. Raised 2 kids; one of whom just graduated with honors from college. Run my own little business. Tried everything there was was in my younger years and went on to get hooked on nothing; save cigarettes. And I'm keeping that vice as I think everyone is entitled to one.
The good news is that my generation is now starting to walk the halls of congress and the senate. These folks have had more exposure to it than their predecesors. But the attitudes that need changing are those of our citizens before it will flow over to our representatives. So keep talking. Talk to your friends, neighbors, and relatives. Talk especially to those that disagree. Medical marijuana and the folks in CA got the ball rolling. Let's keep it going.

You are correct about the problem of facts not being said 'out loud'. Fortunately people are finding their voices and the facts are making it into mainstream.
Mainstream media is the place to go to get the word out. Once people find out the facts, things will change. People need to know what our forefathers thought about the plant cannabis hemp. Here are just a few examples of their thoughts, which were removed from history books:
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
