College issues dress guidelines -- for teachers

It is normally students who are sent home for inappropriate attire, but one English college is threatening to send lecturers home for violating a dress code, which includes a ban on jeans.

Their union has accused Birmingham Metropolitan College of "acting like the fashion police."

    • Well, i go to this college, and if im being honest with you this rule is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Im a student, and its bloody awkward watching teachers walk around in suits and the look in their face just looks uncomfortable. For gods sake a college is meant to be a place of learning, but its also meant to be a relaxed environment. The majority of students are happy with the fact that they no longer have to wear uniforms, but now staff are being subject to it too? It shouldnt matter what a teacher wears as long as the teaching is done properly. We dont walk into a lesson and go 'oh god she's wearing a blue shirt with red shoes, right thats it i cant learn in this lesson now.' The way the college is being run is like a jail. Everyone must live by the rules set, and that's all well and good, but only as long as the rules are not ridiculous and are not put in place so that the Head can feel as if shes in a really important business. College is not a business, so why should the staff be subject to walking around like robots?

    • i don't see a problem with a college wanting their employees to dress professionally. if there are individuals that don't agree with it, go somewhere else. it's a job.

    • Damn!! I'm beginning to wonder if I'm in the right place. Am I the only old fart here? I've been out of school longer than most of you have been alive.

    • Community colleges pride themselves in being friendly and approachable. Guess this particular one missed the memo and want to create the next generation of drones

    • I'm glad they are focusing on the real problems at colleges/universities around the world...those damn professors and their jeans. Now students everywhere can finally learn in peace and not be distracted by unkempt professors...finally.

    • I think they should be able to wear what they want. They aren't dealing with children! But i do see how there are limits, but that's prolly something they need to balance themselves.
