You could say Judge Herman Thomas was a rising star. He was a popular black Democrat in mostly white and Republican Mobile County, Alabama, which is like a Jew being elected Grand Marshal of the Hezbollah 4th of July Parade. President Clinton even nominated him to the federal bench.
Thomas was the kind of judge who went the extra mile to rehabilitate inmates. He'd meet with them privately in his chambers, and would intervene in sentencing even if the case wasn't in his court room. But admirers seemed to have confused rampant sexual thirst for helpfulness...
Word of his unusual practices first arose in 2001, when an inmate filed
suit claiming Thomas had agreed to help him in exchange for sex. But
the inmate was deemed, well, an untrustworthy inmate, and the suit was
dismissed.
Thomas reputation was quickly restored, and he remained popular with the electorate. But that changed six years later, when he was accused of bringing male inmates to his chambers, asking them to pull down their pants, then spanking them with a paddle. This wasn't the kind of spanking practiced by middle school principals prior to the 1980s. This was hot man-on-man action, a practice not highly regarded in the ranks of the Alabama judiciary.
Thomas resigned as an ethics investigation was launched. But as detectives dug further, they found they had a total creep on their hands. Last spring, he was indicted by a grand jury for sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse, extortion and assault. It seems the good judge was a full-on sexual predator.
