The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised said: "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future
"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."
The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.
"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."
The prize is worth 10 million Swedish crowns (£900,000) and will be handed over in Oslo on December 10.

Congratulations President Obama on the Nobel Peace Prize -- Now Please Earn it!
Friday, October 9th, 2009
Dear President Obama,
How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.
But...
The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of our War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do.
There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.
The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee.
You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don't, you'll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.
Yours,
Michael Moore
MMFlint@aol.com
MichaelMoore.comP.S. Your opposition has spent the morning attacking you for bringing such good will to this country. Why do they hate America so much? I get the feeling that if you found the cure for cancer this afternoon they'd be denouncing you for destroying free enterprise because cancer centers would have to close. There are those who say you've done nothing yet to deserve this award. As far as I'm concerned, the very fact that you've offered to walk into the minefield of hate and try to undo the irreparable damage the last president did is not only appreciated by me and millions of others, it is also an act of true bravery. That's why you got the prize. The whole world is depending on the U.S. -- and you -- to literally save this planet. Let's not let them down.

Right, I got carried away with replying to other comments... what I wanted to say, was that I just saw Obama on Channel 4 News talking about how he feels to be receiving the award, and I gotta say, he said all the right things (which he seems to be pretty good at). He basically said that he doesn't think he deserves it personally, and is actually slightly confused by it, but it's a good message to send out to the world. Rather, it's a statment of intentions, both for America and others. It's sort of like, he's been given the award, now he really, really has to actually do the things the award represents. Like an incentive to do them.
Anyway, that sly Obama sure knows how to tickle my buttons. I don't know if I like him or not, the bastard. - 2 years ago

Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize. Arms manufacturer and inventor of dynamite and other explosives pretty much used in all wars since the late nineteenth century. Peaceful man.

Mr_Ben:
He invented dynamite for use in blasting away rock from areas where architecture, like bridges and other construction, were to be built. It was supposed to be a safer alternative to existing techniques, which saw many unnecessary deaths. He called it "Nobel's Safety Powder" in comparison to that. He wanted to SAVE lives. He did not invent it for death and war, you foolish person, and he was in fact utterly dismayed when he learned what it was being used for. It was much like Einstein and the A-bomb. Both persons in question performed research and invention with the best of intentions, but it was other people who distorted these good intentions into bad things.

Mr_Ben:
Erm, Nobel is not just like Einstein. I'm not saying he was a warmonger, but he was most definitely into arms.
Much of his family's wealth before him, and even his own, came from arms. His father's fortune came largely from supplying naval mines to the Russian military during the Crimean war. In 1852 Alfred joined this family business - which was booming due to the war. The fortunes made during this time allowed him the freedom and money to devote to nitroglycerine research.
Nobel invented ballistite (smokeless powder) not for mining or construction, but for ammunition. The learnings from non-weaponized explosives were at the root of it, but ballistite was created and sold as a weapon. Nobel himself called the "crowning glory" of his career. He offered it to the french military, but eventually sold it to the Italian military. This was largely seen as treason (he lived in France at the time), which is why he moved to Italy.
Nobel himself bought Bofors AB and personally reshaped it from an ironworks company into a modern cannon manufacturer which would later become one of the largest arms manufacturers of the time. He was naive to believe that his invention of dynamite would end all wars due to its destructive power. Alfred told Bertha von Suttner, an advocate for world peace that:
"My factories may make an end of war sooner than your congresses. The day when two army corps can annihilate each other in one second, all civilized nations, it is to be hoped, will recoil from war and discharge their troops."
Even so it was not until a french newspaper on the death of his brother had mistakenly wrote his obituary calling him "The Merchant of Death" that he decided to set up the Nobel Prizes and bequeath his fortune to fund them. - 2 years ago

I think this is a good thing, perhaps a little premature as he's not "done" very much so far but promises a lot. Also, I think the fact that he's so high profile may have swung it for him over some lesser known person with equal merit. With the Nobel its hard to say what factors they actually take into account in their final decision.

Amnesty International today congratulated US President Barack Obama on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2009 and urged him in the spirit of that award to keep justice, human rights and the rule of law at the centre of his efforts to promote peace.
“President Obama has taken some positive steps towards improving human rights in the USA and abroad, but much remains to be done,” said Irene Khan, Amnesty International's Secretary General.
“This award raises our expectations of President Obama and we look to him for decisive action to pursue peace with justice in the Middle East, end the rollback on human rights in the name of counter-terrorism, and reinforce the fight against poverty at a time of economic crisis.”
Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977.

As far as I can tell, Obama has won an award for doing nothing, or at least won an award for "promises" and things he says he's gonna do in the future. Do we award people for making promises, rather than actually keeping them? Unfortunately, it seems so. Forget about giving him the award when he has actually made a difference big enough to deserve it. How long has he been President? What is this? Like let's give the token black president a token Nobel Peace Prize? Cos he aint done shit as far as I'm concerned, he just says things that people want to hear. Yay, it's Obama, let's drool over what he has to say.

Other contenders this year were thought to be Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, jailed Chinese dissident Hu Jia, Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba who has campaigned for a peaceful solution to the almost 50-year-old conflict in her country and Afghan doctor and women's rights activist Sima Samar.

what about foreign relations in general? gaining support of other countries for our efforts and strengthening ties between old allies that were beginning to think we were off our rocker, that's what he has been fixing, diplomatically, meeting with foreign leaders bush would never have met with.
just because the war isn't over, doesn't mean he hasn't done nothing to deserve recognition. The meetings and talks he has been doing to try and strengthen our international relations with our enemies is something that i think bush would have never agreed too and was a huge mistake on his part, that obama is now mending.

on iraq:
"Let me say this as plainly as I can: By August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end," Obama said in a speech at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. (but if this isnt accurate and he announced something i missed let me know)im ok with that. as long as it happens... if 2010 comes around and august passes by and i dont read or hear anything about all the soldiers reuniting at home.. me and you can be best friends.

besides your focusing on the actions of others, when the nobel commitee only considers the actions of the person.
he didnt sign gitmo into existence, he didnt approve waterboarding(as well as the other torture shits). what he did do is talk... with his enemies... something bush didn't do. and this is why they think he is a pretty kool guy and deserves the award.and obviously no matter what i say you wont agree with me. so why keep replying. i understand your point, but it hasn't to do with why they awarded him the prize.
