Obama's Nobel Win: Reactions - Is it too soon?

Image
afitzgerald
FROM THE NEWS BLOG:
My first reaction to the Obama Nobel announcement was "What? Really?" Completely surprised. And it turns out, so was the rest of the internet (er, the world) was too.

Why Obama? Well the Nobel committee cites his efforts to create a new climate of international politics. Good reason, but you could argue he's only just begun with that. From the statement: "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future."

Is this award a boon to Obama or a new albatross of expectation? Many commentators fear it will be the latter.

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo sees the reasons behind it:
"This is an odd award. You'd expect it to come later in Obama's presidency and tied to some particular event or accomplishment. But the unmistakable message of the award is one of the consequences of a period in which the most powerful country in the world, the 'hyper-power' as the French have it, became the focus of destabilization and in real if limited ways lawlessness. A harsh judgment, yes. But a dark period. And Obama has begun, if fitfully and very imperfectly to many of his supporters, to steer the ship of state in a different direction. If that seems like a meager accomplishment to many of the usual Washington types it's a profound reflection of their own enablement of the Bush era and how compromised they are by it, how much they perpetuated the belief that it was 'normal history' rather than dark aberration."

Time's Mark Halperin writes that it's only fuel for his critics:
"Barack Obama's critics have long accused him of being a man of "just words," rather than concrete actions and accomplishments. The stunning decision to award him the Nobel Peace prize for, basically, his rhetoric, will almost certainly infuriate his detractors in America more than it will delight his supporters."

And The National Review seems to support that, echoing a pretty wide cynical tone from the right

"Obama isn't the first American president to win the Nobel Peace Prize, but he's the first to win it without having accomplished anything. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt (five years on the job) had encouraged international arbitration and helped mediate peace between Russia and Japan. In 1919, Woodrow Wilson (six years on the job) helped end the First World War through American intervention and then worked for peace afterward — the Versailles Conference was a disaster, but nobody understood quite how at the time and Wilson, for all his faults, was certainly well intentioned. In 2002, Jimmy Carter (more than two decades after the job) was recognized, rightly or wrongly, for a variety of humanitarian efforts. They all had track records. Obama's award is simply the projection of wishful thinking."

What do you think of Obama's surprise win? Will it help or hurt his efforts?

you don't award people for being black and not white or being "better".

No one mentioned race but you. I said it was a poke at GW Bush and his arrogance. Race is what is on your mind.

    • Being the Noble prize tends to award efforts instead of results, it's no surprise he was nominated, but winning it being he's not even done with his first year in office is quite ridiculous. I agree with Obama himself, he doesn't deserve it at this time. Why award this honor so prematurely?

In his heart he wants a single-payer health care system as I do, that's why I voted for Nader. Instead, he pushed the impotent government option because the democrats are a bunch of pussies who care more about re-election than actual change, and this maneuver not only made it easy for the republicans to stop the government option, but it has the potential for a reverse effect, it could very well hurt the democrats chances of re-election now. Also, if Obama decides to give into the military and the military industrial complex, and send more troops to Afghanistan, he will then deserve to have his Noble prize taken away. We all know this "war on terror" is bullshit, let's just be honest here, and we all know what happened to the Soviets when they tried to tame Afghanistan. Real change IS NOT continuing the same BULLSHIT! I'm so sick of this shit. How in the world a Noble peace prize fits into this clusterfuck I have no idea. Another fricking distraction I guess.

....and I didn't even get to finish what it was I wanted to accomplish. I may have the means, but that doesn't matter as much as me just saying.

This is an awesome world Obama is creating for us.

I could win the best father of the year award by stating how I will raise my kids and beat out those that have already started to do it.

      LOVE IT.

I could buy Disney on an IOU because I will have billions let me tell you about the plan and you'll be forced to agree that with in years it'll be true. Because the plan makes the man not the action.

    • I think people sometimes forget (or don't know) that all not Nobel Peace Prize Laureates have accomplished their goals of peace. Sometimes, Nobel Peace Prize are awarded for the effort to achieve peace.

The Nobel Peace prize can sometimes be awarded for effort. Remember Aung San Suu Kyi from Burma? She received the prize in 1991 for promoting democracy in Burma and fighting against the military junta. Unfortunately, Burma (Myanmar) is still under a military junta, and Aung San Suu Kyi is currently under house detention.

Should the Nobel committee rescind her award? She still hasn't accomplished her goal, yet.

What about Shirin Ebadi of Iran? Her goal of promoting women's rights in Iran is going well, right?

The Dalai Lama also got a Peace Prize for the struggle to liberate Tibet. Clearly, we could see the results today since Tibet is now independent from China.

Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize should be a great moment in American history. He is currently promote diplomacy among other countries and trying to get rid of all nuclear weapons. His efforts to create a nuclear weapon free world and promoting international cooperation are the reasons why President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize.

To better understand this rambling, you should watch Rachel Maddow's explanation of why Obama should have gotten an award. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/

    • Let's deal with the "he hasn't done anything" accusation.

First, let's look at the the reasons the Nobel Committe gave for awarding Obama: "The committee said it honored Obama for his 'extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.'”

What has he DONE to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people?

-He fulfilled his campaign promise to reach out to the Muslim world by giving a speech at a major Islamic forum. He gave several speeches like the ones in Turkey and Cairo, where he reaffirmed that we are not at war with Islam and would like a new beginning for Muslim-American relations.

-He is in the process of fulfilling his campaign promise to end the war in Iraq. Though not on the schedule that some may wish for, troops are gradually being sent back to America with 4000 more due home by the end of THIS month. The goal is to end our military presence by 2012.

-Another Iraq related promise was to increase diplomatic efforts with Iraq’s neighbors to ensure Iraq’s stability. While these efforts are “in the works”, those appointed as diplomats have visited Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other middle eastern countries and will continue “ongoing, high-level engagement” (in the words of Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.)

-Obama is working on another campaign promise, the goal to reduce nuclear stockpiles around the world. We have been working closely with Russia for the first time in many years on this goal. In an act of good faith and repaired relations with Russia, Obama dropped plans for a missile defense system in Europe.

-With Russia and other country’s help, Iran is (seemingly) cooperating with the international community in the matters of nuclear power and the development of nuclear weapons. Recent talks with Iran marked a historical shift in America’s foreign policy towards them and Iran’s attitude towards the United Nations.

-Obama dismissed the concept of our “War on Terror” and banned torture and so-called “extreme interrogation techniques” such as water boarding. Signing an executive order ensuring lawful interrogations was done early in his Presidency.

-While we are currently seen as being “at war” with Afghanistan, we are actually working with the government and military there – part of the troops being sent to Afghanistan are military trainers, with the goal being to help train the army and police in the area.

-Obama has proposed a doubling of U.S foreign financial aid. Budget pending! It would be about $50 billion a year if it passes with the goal for 2012. In addition to this, “The 2010 Budget includes funding for the first year of a multiyear effort to significantly increase the size of the Foreign Service at both the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).”

-Another proposal in the budget would give $2 billion into a global education fund. Pending!

-In April Obama lifted restrictions on both travel and money in regards to Cuba, allowing Cuban-Americans to visit their families and send them money and donation items for the first time in years.

-Another campaign promise was creating a “energy partnership” with the Americas- as in, Canada and South America. Obama traveled to many countries to talk with leaders about sharing emissions data and collaborating on energy issues. The Mexican president and Canadian Prime Minister are among leaders who agreed to the efforts.

Many of these concepts are in the works. But the Nobel Committee was very clear that they are awarding his EFFORTS – I hope I have shown enough evidence that those efforts are real and deserving!

Delia, I don't think they would really accept all of that, this is the most of what they don't appreciate of him, because of what Obama does not meet their needs and wants, or expectations, so its clear, to them, that he "doesn't deserve" the Prize, and that too is the reason of why those who say he hasn't done anything, because its not anything of their expectations...

Except that I was wrong. I should have read more and refreshed my memory before posting rather than after. I'd forgotten about the abandonment of the missile shield (and what that means to easing tensions and showing good will) as well as the nonsensical War on Terror. And there is more to what he has done regarding Iran (and the region) than simply failing to rattle his saber. Basically Delia's post (which I admit contains a few I hadn't known to forget.) He still has work to do but it cannot be said that it hasn't begun and that is what he has been honored for. I guess then that if there is anything to be questioned regarding this years Peace Prize, it is whether or not the committee had high enough standards. I say yes but I have been wrong already at least once today!

    • I have been thinking about this all day. The only sense I can make of it is that it is a ploy to shame him into following through with the things he said he would do. I mean, the only thing he has done that I know of is not assume an aggressive posture towards Iran or any other country. And that is a good thing. But he hasn't closed Gitmo or gotten us the hell out of Afghanistan or ended Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell or made any other positive move. If you look at the non-posture towards Iran, good thing though it is, and all of this other, you see that he has literally done nothing! So maybe this award is an effort by the committee to oblige him to do the things he must in order to actually earn the honor. I voted for him and even I don't think he deserves it.

Obama plans on doing good, has done, and is doing good. This may be premature, but this award is saying, "Hey, America. We like what you've done with your makeover. Keep it up, be the Nation of peace and good that your President has promised." And that's some good encouragement, and one big global stamp of approval.

    • Congratulations President Obama on the Nobel Peace Prize -- Now Please Earn it!

      Friday, October 9th, 2009

      Dear President Obama,

How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

      But...

The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of our War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do.

There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.

The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee.

You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don't, you'll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.

      Yours,
      Michael Moore
      MMFlint@aol.com
      MichaelMoore.com

P.S. Your opposition has spent the morning attacking you for bringing such good will to this country. Why do they hate America so much? I get the feeling that if you found the cure for cancer this afternoon they'd be denouncing you for destroying free enterprise because cancer centers would have to close. There are those who say you've done nothing yet to deserve this award. As far as I'm concerned, the very fact that you've offered to walk into the minefield of hate and try to undo the irreparable damage the last president did is not only appreciated by me and millions of others, it is also an act of true bravery. That's why you got the prize. The whole world is depending on the U.S. -- and you -- to literally save this planet. Let's not let them down.

Even though the war started before Obama became president, he was already on the Senate at the time.

But who cares about the Nobel Prize anyways?

PEACE 1 OBSCURANTISM... (well pretty much the whole friggin' ball game up to now)

The potential for peace is there alright since most of humanity wants it, but will the military industrial complex let it happen ? If the past is any indication of the future...

Peace, if it really arrived, would upset things. At present, arms expenditure and (military) aid to other countries are bolstering business. U.S. News and World Report, December 31, 1948

but a matter of what is perceived to be true." - Henry Kissinger

True peace is not merely the absence of tension:
it is the presence of justice - Martin Luther King, jr.

Let's not forget that being president is a job--one that he isn't doing a very good job at. But man, he sure can deliver a speech! I'm thinking instead of the Nobel it should be an Oscar. He sure can act. I'd like to find out more about his director though...

Um... really name someone else pushing for peace as much as him... You'd have to be an idiot to think he could pull out of the wars in just a years time... he has back out of Iraq and is taking the necessary steps to eventually have peace in Afghanistan...

but once again... this prize is not for him policies... it is for him as a person, and right now nothing give the hope for peace more than Obama...

oh yeah, Bush should have received a peace prize right?

I think it is interesting that you refer to ideology - what does that mean? This country is at war... war is not an ideology. Should a leader of a country at war receive a peace prize?

    • he won a prize... so what... doesnt change what we as people think about him.

if anything it helps our political standings with other countries.

a president who has been recognized by the nobel peace peoples for efforts in diplomacy (is how i read it)... i would think you would be a bit proud of it. the prize isn't for his policies but for his action in dealing with the global community and treating people around the world like people.

    • The Nobel Peace prize doesn't mean jack shit.

Milton Friedman was nominated for it.

And Henry "baby-killer" Kissenger won this award as well.

But so did Martin Luther King Jr, Aang Sang Suyki, Wangarai Mattai, Nelson Mandella, as well as American presidents Teddy Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. He's amongst good company.

    • I admit I was surprised to see Obama get the award, however I really do think he disserves it. I can't think of any other political figures that have tried to bring everyone together to solve the major issues with the world today. I may disagree with a few policies that Obama does, but ya really can't deny that he is doing his best to make a world better for not just America, but for everyone in the world. For that congratz Obama!

Okay maybe he's trying, however he hasn't done anything. That's the rub of this whole situation. Guy hasn't DONE anything yet. I think he won because he is a dark guy with a funny sounding name that got elected president of U.S now that is an accomplishment. Maybe I'm just being too cynical in this thinking but I can see no other reason.
