Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

afitzgerald
In a surprise move, the Nobel Comittee in Oslo, Norway announced today that they would award the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama. Obama, accepting the award, said he would take it as a "call to action". While some were enthusiastic for the decision, many of Obama's critics said that the President had not yet accomplished enough to earn the award.

    • Wow, I was going to leave a comment but it seems it'll be overshadowed by some of the other tremendously informative statements above.... What the hell. The Nobel Peace prize has as much VALUE as the American people give it. The World as a whole is hoping that by backing Obama for PEACE that the American people will back him for the same reason only with greater resolve. We live in a CORRUPT government that has a systematic recycling program that just breeds corruption, it bi-partisan! The WORLD knows how fucked up it is and really wants to help us break free inside so they can be freed outside. Its really that fucked up in here and they know it. We have a chance for change, not Obama, but People determined to live in PEACE can drive Obama to PEACE, REAL PEACE! PEACE, NO AMERICAN HAS KNOWN PEACE!!!!! Think about it, please?

    • ........And Obama's nomination in the swill world of the Orwell Peace Prize is in good company. Although they didn't get the prize, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Joseph Stalin were nominated. History has proven what kind of 'peace makers' they were and history will prove that Obama is of the same ilk.

Ha ha ha that prize is a joke.....

    • "That's pretty amazing, winning the Nobel Peace Prize," Jay Leno said Friday night of President Barack Obama's latest accolade. "Ironically, his biggest accomplishment as president so far ... winning the Nobel Peace Prize."

That joke may be indicative of the TV comedy world sharpening its arrows a bit more when the current occupant of the White House is the target, The New York Times reports.

President Barack Obama Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

The Times quotes Bob Lichter, who has tracked themes in late-night humor for 21 years, as saying "it will be telling to see how the comedians treat" the president's winning the peace prize: Is there now a caricature taking hold of a man more celebrated than accomplished?

Lichter, of George Mason University's Center for Media and Public Affairs, said it was too soon to tell whether the Oct. 3 Saturday Night Live skit suggesting that Obama has accomplished nothing is a "harbinger" or not. "The danger is that Mr. Obama is going to be defined by inaction and not living up to expectations," he said.

SNL skit: Obama has done nothing

SNL this weekend joined in the jokes about Obama not deserving the prize just yet, suggesting that honors like People's Sexiest Man designation may soon go to children.

Last week Jon Stewart continued with the "done nothing" theme on The Daily Show, chiding Obama for not yet getting around to reversing the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy about gays. He cited Obama's "full plate" of business.

Stewart then acted apoplectic, displaying his exasperation. "All that stuff you've been putting on your plate?" he said. "It's [expletive] chow time, brother. That's how you get things off your plate."

Ric Keller, a former Republican congressman from Florida who once wrote jokes for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, told the Times: "There have been some clear shots coming across the bow from the comic left."

But Jeff Nussbaum, a Democratic speech and joke writer, disagreed that late-night comedy is a leading indicator of the zeitgeist. "To use an economic term, it is more of a lagging indicator," he said.

Those old enough to remember Watergate might recall that it took Johnny Carson awhile to start making jokes about President Richard Nixon and his connection to the break-in. But once the Tonight show host did, it felt like the beginning of the end for the U.S. leader who eventually resigned.

    • This is so much a joke. Nominations due 12 days after him taking office. He appears to have won for being elected.
Obama had, and continues to have, zero accomplishments. Like Gore and Carters awards for the Nobel, what a farce.
With this as a barometer, I should win the Pulitzer for the novel I might publish as some future point

On a scale of 1 to 10...how much damage has the previous executive branch has bestowed on america compared to Obama ?

Robert Kennedy Jr. nailed it when he said that during a Repug administration Big Media goes AWOL but comes back with a vengeance as soon as Dems get to power...

The GOP stole 2 elections… the first by perverting the supreme court…nothing happened…Then 9-11 and a war based on a 1000 lies + the treacherous hoisting of a CIA agent… nothing happened… ENRON....zzzzzz....they proceeded to shred the constitution, kidnapped imprisoned & tortured the world over…nothing…spied on one & all, fired top US attorneys, destroyed evidence… nada… conducted Katrina’s thinly veiled ethic cleansing …zilch…then they took us to the cleaners…

Some education & a sense of history is needed to get a little perspective & relative assessment of guilt for the situation we are in but that is waaay to much to ask for the obscurantist crowd so proud of what they ignore ;)

    • When a statesman wins a prize it's as much about the state as it is about the man. When I heard that President Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize yesterday, my first thought that it was actually nod to the United States not the man.

Looking at the Noble Peace Prize through this lens, the prize is a nod to the American people living American ideals. We are a nation where despite our known troubles with race anyone can achieve their dreams and become President of the United States. No matter your political leaning, this is something to be proud of. In face we don't necessarily need to agree all of the time, but we should stop and recognize that we do in fact live in a more perfect union.

Many are too focused on their own perspective to look at this through someone else eyes or too partisan not to stick to the parties line. Fortunately, the Nobel Committee is not fettered with our history or political rivalries or biases. They are looking at this through a longer historical lens that recognizes progress even if some do not. We should all be proud that we are all have the opportunity to live the American dream flawed though it may be.

    • I'm happy for that. just give a chance to obama. things can't be changed in a day. it takes time. he is trying. at least he tries! many of us could do more and we stay in our cosy home, delivering judgements without even trying to help our next door friends. i'm with obama. finally someone brought hope to believe there can be a better living.

I gave him a chance but after spending 2 trillion dollars in his first 90 days I say screw him. He did know we are in a recession when he spent it. He was irresponsible with the checkbook and now we need to take it away. And by the way none of the radicals will be pleased either. We have more troops fighting now then last year, he will send more troops, hasn't done a thing for gay rights, Immigration reform hasn't even come up, and I haven't received my health card in the mail yet. A lot of promises not kept. Maybe next time a candidate promises so much crap the radicals won't believe it.

    • um i believe obama wasnt involved with clinton's deal because he had yet to be in a position to do so.he may have very well been in college at the time.
      what has ron paul done.
i mean saying is great but doing is what matters.
has ron paul been smart enough to refine his message to get elected to actually do the things he talks about, or much rather just stand on his soap box preaching.

Obama never called out Bush like this! He just nods his head and the media and people go crazy as our country drifts closer and closer to corporatism! Obama is a fraud, not a hero.....a warmonger and fearmonger!

Your real beef is with what GW and the neo-cons have done. They did so much that it will take years and years to get it undone.
And guess what? The Republicans don't want it undone!

You are right, the Republicans and Democrats are working together to expand the U.S. Empire.

The real beef is not with a political party. It is with the political system.

    • Yes, do something like educate people on why he is a fraud along with the neocons! How can people actually believe this Nobel propaganda just amazes me. I hope a few of you are waking up to this BS! It's all about power and control, the media backs it up, and now people actually believe this guy has something is common with Gandhi.....just kills me inside knowing this guy just killed 9 Pakistani civilians yesterday with his drones! The President is NOT peaceful, he is a power control fraud like Bush! The same Bush who ran in 2000 on a modest foreign policy and no nation building. It is such as disgrace........the Nobel prize has been taken over by the Internationalists and statists!

Yeah but no one said change meant an increased budget for the Department of "Defense," more troops in the Middle East, and more civilian casualties.

There are easy steps Obama could have made, but chose not to, towards ending the senseless and bloody wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The reality is that Obama has made the decision to continue and expand the neo-conservative agenda of nation building, empire expansion and endless war.
