This kind of thing just makes me so angry at the NRA and the gun cabal that keep spreading the myth that having guns in the house is a good thing, makes you safe and secure. The worn out cliche that "when seconds count the police are just minutes away" in this case would have meant the woman would still be alive and instead of a funeral he would be going to his wedding. So very tragic.

If he would have had a little more firearms training he would have known to identify the person first, either by using a flashlight or ordering the person to identify themselves.
Then nobody would have had to call 911 in the first place.

This fits the definition of epic failure very well, maybe more so if he had shot himself.

In 1982 38% of murders were committed with guns in Chicago
Today 70% are commited with guns. They have been outlawed in Chicago since 1982.
The law doesnt work.

So you are saying that if there were tighter gun control laws in Florida she would have been much more likely to have been shot?..Curious the conclusion you drew from this tragedy.

A few of the responses that made me think sooner or later someone here was going to call for more gun control because of this story. And the first response was one of them here they are:
FROM BOOMCHAKA:
youre 22 times more likely to shoot a family member than an intruderMANNY0409 SAYS:
this is a good reason why people should not have guns in their homes or anywhere else...at all! I bet he won't pull it on anyone anymore...and I do feel sorry for him. It must be tough to go through this. And of course there is always unimatrix0 who never misses a chance to run guns and gun owners into the ground with insightful comments such as this:
Another reason for more gun control and a sensible national policy on guns.
Also, yet another example of how that gun in your house will not shoot the bad guy; that gun in your house will shoot you or someone you love.
A sensible policy of gun control does not mean ban all guns.
The gun lobby and the NRA are as corrupt and deadly as the Tobacco lobby once was. It is only a matter of time until America wakes up to the truth.
I would like to know what more senisble guns laws she thinks would have prevented this tradegy? Are there any other than a total ban on guns. People like her wont rest until every citizen is unarmed. I wont rest as long as someone is trying to get my guns.
I just jumped in with the numbers from chicago to show that gun laws only work for law abiding citizens. Making more gun laws only affects law abiding citizens. we have enough gun laws and laws in general for that matter. Enforce the ones that are on the books before they make more.

Would this have been somehow better if he'd brained her with a golf club in the dark instead? Should we then outlaw golf clubs?
Gun control would not necessarily have prevented this.

One of the main 4 gun safety rules is "know your target and what's behind it." That is why every person I know who has a firearm in their home keeps a flashlight next to it so they can identify the person in the dark. If everyone who had a firearm trained regularly and exercised common sense these incidents wouldn't happen.
Having a firearm does not make you safer, knowing how to use it and utilizing common sense does.
That said, this story is a shame.

Can you say "isolated incident?"
And yes it is a horrible story, but a horrible, emotional story shouldn't spell the end of the 2nd amendment.

IMHO the question becomes should people be allowed the personal freedom to exercise their rights even though it potentially causes as many problems as it solves and not everyone likes it. Either you are for that kind of thing or against it.

Honestly, who just pulls a gun and shoots blindly?
Would you not try to be a bit more stealth and try to catch them by surprise? Furthermore, why a lethal shot if you're not sure.....
