Interracial couple denied marriage license

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
Neither Bardwell nor the couple immediately returned phone calls from The Associated Press. But Bardwell told the Daily Star of Hammond that he was not a racist. "I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said. "My main concern is for the children."
Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said. "I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves," Bardwell said. "In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer." If he does an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said. "I try to treat everyone equally," he said.
Thirty-year-old Beth Humphrey and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.
Humphrey told the newspaper she called Bardwell on Oct. 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license signed. She says Bardwell's wife told her that Bardwell will not sign marriage licenses for interracial couples.
"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzman. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

That's such bullshit. Most people in America have interracial coupling their ancestry SOMEWHERE. My parents are an interracial couple, my great grandmother was cherokee Indian, and God knows what else is mixed in me. And me and my brother are doing pretty damn well.

So my parents would have been out! Good thing we live in California. Oops Prop 8! People shouldn't be denied the right to wed the person they love if they are of a legal age. You can apply this to the rights of Same-sexed couples to marry - to me it is so sad to think that this kind of blatant discrimination/ hatred is not only present in the minds of some citizens but also continues to infect our legal system.

this jackass Bardwell said,
"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."
"I just don't believe in mixing the races that way" What way?? Marriage?? So, a mixed race couple should just live in sin then, I guess. They can screw and use his bathroom. They just can get married. This guy is a joke of a human being. Is it too late to bring back "tar and feathering"???

Been married almost 25 years. Longer than some folks who are of the same race. I suspect interracial marriages in certain areas probably don't last -- because of the horrible stuff they receive from people like this. But he's wrong to assume that Blacks won't accept the offspring. And I'm not sure about the longevity white/white marriages or black/black marriages. Am not sure if this is the exact opinion homophobic people have about gay marriages and children. Although alike in many ways, racial oppression is very different from oppression toward gays re: child-rearing.

Lol, equal treatment under the law refers to racial, cultural, ethnic and other forms of discrimination.
If punishments really were equal with no exceptions or differences in situation, then the 5-year prison sentence for a guy who stole something from a store should also be granted to the toddler who picked up a candy bar. The guy who accidentally hit a pedestrian should be punished the same as a guy who brutally murdered his wife. A common robber breaks into a home and kills the inhabitant while trying to steal money should be punished the same as someone who breaks into the home of someone they hate because of their skin color or ideas.
The world isn't black and white. Hate crime legislation deals with crimes committed based on hateful discrimination (racism, sexism, homophobia) which should be recognized for what it is.
