Huge Holes in the Earth: Open-Pit Mines Seen From Space

People have become significant earth movers, outpacing all sources of natural erosion. More and more of our footprint can be seen from space in many forms, including cities, reservoirs, agriculture and deforestation. Among the most impressive human scars on the planet are open-pit mines.

    • i worked briefly at a gold recovery mine in the upper mojave. we had large ponds built from the tailings of old gold mines and filled them with sulfuric acid and water. they were always full of poisoned birds who had tried to cross the desert and stopped for a drink.

    • we buy products that don't last and throw them away. if we bought lasting products there wouldn't be these scars in our mother's face.
