Interracial couple denied marriage? What about Obama?

As I read the unbelievable story of how Louisiana Judge Keith Bardwell showed that racism is indeed a mental illness by denying an interracial couple a marriage license because they were, well, of different skin colors, I thought about President Obama.
As Americans know, perhaps even Judge Keith Bardwell, Barack Obama is the product of an interracial marriage between a black man and a white woman. Terence McKay and his girlfriend Beth Humphrey, the victims of Judge Bardwell's racism are black male and white female.
What was the reason Judge Bardwell gave for his mindless actions? "I do it to protect the children, he reportedly said. The kids are innocent and I worry about their futures."
Ok, so Judge Bardwell's trying to prevent the creation of future Presidents of the United States, right? Because if you think about it, if laws against interracial marriage were still on the books and enforced, we would never have a President Obama.
But my concern is that folks like Judge Bardwell are allowed to practice as a judge anywhere in America. That he's active says as much for Louisiana as it does for him. Governor Bobby Jindal should be very concerned about the message of racial hostility Louisiana sends out to the World with Judge Bardwell's obvious violation of the civil rights of Americans.
What's even more frightening is Judge Bardwell doesn't think he's racist. According to the Associated Press, Bardwell said this:
"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."
That, folks, is the statement of one who in my view is irrational.
I totally agree with my SFGate.com CityBrights friend Yobie Benjamin, who writes:
This case is important as it shows the deep seated ignorance of some people in power. In the deep south, the justice of the peace is an important position of power and influence and is an elected position. From another point-of-view, the case is clearly no different from the discrimination gay couples suffer when government refuses to grant them right to marry.
Bardwell says he isn't telling inter-racial coupes they can't get married..only that he doesn't want to perform the ceremony.
+++++++++++++++
Do you think he should be able to get away with this? Should he be thrown off the bench?

I would like the "Judge" to see all of the beautiful happy and successful children from interracial marriages. Is there going to be some problems for children of bi-racial marriages? Probably. My mother is from Syria and my father is from here and is German and English descent. I have never considered myself bi-racial but that did not stop other people from calling names or make comments. I would not trade my life or my parents for anything else in the world. I have a niece and two nephews that are from an "inter-racial marriage. They are the most adorable and absolutely best children any family could ever hope to evr have. This Judge says he is not racist. He is clearly ignorant.

By not believing in mixing the races that way and by denying the marriage license, is he not playing GOD.
I agree, he should not be allowed to make that choice. If two people fall in love, don't they have the right to consumate that love without some 'holier than thou' jerk denying them that right..?
Just another 'so called' 'pillar of society' trying to prove to his elitist buddies that he has the power to maintain the 'status quo...'
Letting his black friends use his bathroom, definitely proves that he's not racist... inelegant to say the least...

Now, had it been a white man and a black woman, that justice of peace would likely have granted the license.

racism is really an economic problem, and a distraction at the same time. Everyone is trying to figure out whos screwing who but in the end, everyone is being screwed by the same people. As long as poor white people in the south are bickering with poor black people they can never realize they're both poor people that should be working together.
So how does one weaken the proletariat? Perpetuate the existence of racism and its "struggle" to keep them fighting each other... - 2 years ago

The first thing a racist in denial says is something like 'my best friend is black.'
I never really had an issue as a child being biracial. I hate when people say that, "what about the kids?" What about them? I'm fine, my siblings are fine.

"Piles and piles of black friends"? That doesn't strike anyone else as kind of a holocaust reference? I mean isn't that a bizarre thing to say, even for a racist.

In my opinion, this kind of bullsh!t reflects some of what is happening to gay couples in America, but that's just my opinion.

Privatize marriage, let the religions handle marriage, not bureaucrats and politicians!
There is no need for government to be in marriage, it is about money, power, and a way for them to show the fact that they own you

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way,"
This quote should read, "I'm not racist, but, I am racist."
What is it with people who feel the need to say, "You know, I have many black friends who I joke and eat dinner with everyday blah blah blah," when they're questioned about their tolerance?
Sounds like this guy is being overly defensive. His overcompensation (i.e. I have piles and piles of black friends) makes it appear as though even he questions his openness.

Hell of a thing, eh, Jubal? It's not as if Loving v. Virginia is cryptic or open to interpretation or new, right? Amazing. The most disturbing part though is that he thinks (really believes) that he's compassionate and open-minded and not racist. I know homophobic folks like that, and sexist folks, and ageist folks, and xenophobic folks. We delude ourselves, methinks....

Maybe that's the point. Racist assholes from Louisiana don't want any more Obama's around to make them face the reality that they are indeed racist.

Throw him off of the bench. We should no longer tolerate discrimination and racism in any form especially from those who are supposed to be protecting those rights.
