current community "TOP 100" Group List Petition
But they are groups like the Squirrel group. No offense to that group because i am a member.
They should just list the TOP 100 Most Popular groups . Or a list of all the groups in order. I am talking specifically about groups like H.E.M.P. ! A group that has 130 members and still is not represented ? You current people act like you are ashamed of us potheads, i swear. LET'S LET CANNABIS OUT OF THE CLOSET TOO ! ! ! CURRENT ! WHAT DO YOU SAY ?
At least just give us a TOP 100 groups list. Whoever tried to do the top groups list didnt work.
lets be fair. allow the people who have the most joined have the most coverage..come on guys...i dont gripe about much.! but when i want to go to to my own group with more than 100 people on it "imagine that" to see positive stories about cannabis..i have to search for it or go all the way through all my other groups to get to it. fair is fair ! quit trying to hide cannabis, its time to embrace it !

It would be a fantastic feature of the groups page to simply have a sort-by popularity button on it. Also would be nice to have the ability to "show all subgroups" for each of the categories instead of getting the parent group when you click on a category on the groups page.
Good luck on the redesigns.

The existing /groups page is flawed. We have a redesign in the works. We could spend time fixing these inconsistencies, which will only further delay our present projects in process thus pushing off the /groups redesign, or we could let this be for now and work towards the bigger picture -- redesigning the groups page in a way that makes sense.
We're planning to put our resources on getting the bigger projects completed so we can work on the full /groups redesign.
I think we've covered this pretty clearly. We recognize the need to rework the /groups page, we're working on it, and we think you'll be happy with the changes once they are in place.

hemp and mmm have 250 people combined. im not talking about most people joined in a day/week/month whatever. im talking about the TOP 100 groups being
listed at all times. like it is right now but with exposure based on how many people want to see it. by joining sites it would be like voting all the time. let the most popular groups to the top........it seems fairer to me....
just saying ! thanks.... - 3 years ago

The redesigned /groups page will have a list of "all time most popular." It won't be "top 100" but it will essentially be what you are asking for.
BTW, those two groups have 250 combined members, but have you de-duped the membership? From my viewpoint it seems like we have a total community of pro-marijuana advocates close to ~125 members, each of which belong to these two groups. This isn't exact, but pretty close.

@hunzedog and @spacemikey -- let me answer a few of your questions/proposals:
1. Groups page layout (http://current.com/groups/) -- we have changes planned for this page in future releases. The plan is to display the most popular in list views. One of those views will include the most popular groups of the day. These will be auto-generated based on a combination of TOTAL members, ACTIVE members, stories contributed to the group, etc. We have a few big projects in the pipeline, but this is definitely a part of the plan.
2. Deleting your groups -- this is also in the plan, but much further down the list of priorities.
3. Herbophobia on Current.com -- this a fallacy. We've promoted marijuana-related groups and stories on several occasions, both on the /groups page and on the homepage. Our community often votes up an occasional marijuana story which makes it onto our homepage as well. Consider the following:
The two most popular marijuana groups on the site in the last 30 days are (edit note: I added the clarification of "the last 30 days" after realizing this may be confusing to some):
- "Make Marijuana Matter" (owned by hunzedog) -- it has 24 members, and in the past 30 days ranks as the #5 most popular group.
- "H.E.M.P." (owned by JackHerer) -- it has 10 members and over the past 30 days sits at the 15th most popular group.
All of the other marijuana groups in the system have only 2-5 members apiece, and while "Make Marijuana Matter" and "H.E.M.P." are both popular, that doesn't mean that all marijuana stories posted on Current.com are going to be voted up by the rest of the community.
We pick stories for featuring, but the community also plays a hand in this. If something isn't growing in popularity, we might not choose to feature it. That said, the Herbophobia you mentioned might actually be the result of members of the community not liking what is posted.
Lastly, we also take timeliness into account when picking stories to feature. We update features stories frequently, and even if a story is popular in a popular group, it might not meet our other criteria for featuring (e.g. timeliness or relevance).
Thanks,

Soo, I have another question other than the one above you, and that is :
Some celebrity gossip articles/websites promote under the group "News" instead of "Celebrities" in which "Celebrities" is their specified group that the article rightully belongs in...I have urged the posters to stop putting the article as "News"....
I'm asking you what should we do about this situation?~

The best thing to do with Celebrity articles is to not tag with "news." Regardless, our classifier may still place things in News, if they appear to be newsworthy. Just because it's related to Celebrities does not automatically constitute as being "not news."

Great topic thanks for the submission Hunzedog. The groups feature is absolutely retarded and counter productive. Since there are only so many groups the current staffers should just list all the groups and THEN provide a keyword search as a backup or extra tool. Seriously how much crack does one have to consume to reach the opinion that searching for something you may or may not be aware/interested in is easier done through a keyword search instead of a categorized list of all the active groups?
What's really mindboggling is that each group page operates exactly as I just described, so the idea is by no means new to the community.

@Ricky84 -- When was the last time you visited the /groups page? There is a keyword search on the page below the featured groups carousel.
Additionally, when you do any type of search on Current.com, we surface potentially related groups on the search results page.

they already have about a hundred groups. why not just show the ones with the most people on it ? whats the point in making groups if the best ones arent represented. thats like hiding the chocolate chip cookies from a fat kid. you know he is gunna find them cookies. would you please help make it easier to find the cookies we want. ! or the peanut butter cups.? whatever....

the groups listings are kind of a mess, i found a group for electronic dance music with only 1 other person in it, maybe a top 100 group list will make finding groups easier to join.

yes , now that a couple of reporters know what its like first hand to be held against their will in jail for something that well. {Its not up to me to say what is right or wrong.}
but thats how you get treated for smoking cannabis. i wonder now if anybody at current who might smoke a joint in your bubble bath. to have the doors kicked in and to be taken to a place like (gitmo) for smoking a herb.
i was one of the first folks to wish those girls well when they got snatched up . i knew they were smart. i knew they would be ok because of it. but when they bash cannabis because of the criminals who are forced to sell it to us because of our dumbass laws..who are you helping here.
i wonder if they would like to see their friends sent to jail because they choose to use cannabis now? - 3 years ago

I see it, current is more for promoting sodomy, which makes me want to go smoke a joint and forget about; at the same time they seem to have a little "Herbaphobia" going on.
You're right dog, and I really don't want to see one of there Vanguard reporters, destroying or bad mouthing marijuana anymore I don't care who grew it.
Look just because for legal reasons your users can't technically bring their pot "out of closet", doesn't mean you should contribute to a "herbaphobic" society...
It's crazy they got a whole H.E.M.P. section, and then send clearly biased reporters out with the DEA to hunt the devil weed....
And creators should have more options...

I don't like NOT being able to arrange posts in a group I created. I see it done on the 'news' group , where older posts are moved to the top of the list... why are other groups prevented from the same type of control?
I would like more options to arrange posts as 'the creater' of a group.

ThoughtNu:
@ThoughtNu -- I'm not sure I follow this. Where featuring stories are concerned, group owners and staff members who own groups have the same abilities. The functionality is as follows:
- You can promote a story into one of the top four positions on your group by clicking on the featured button -- this works on the "list," "blog," and "playlist + list" templates in your group admin panel.
- The top four featured stories can be positioned up or down using the admin buttons "up" and "down."
- The popular and new lists for your group are determined by the following:
-- Popular: votes, comments, and views on stories in your group, by members of your group AND the Current.com community.
-- New: the order in which a story is added to your group.
Staff admins have these exact same controls. So, for example, our online producer for Current News is Andrew Fitzgerald. He can only re-position stories he's chosen to feature in positions 1-4. If there is an older story appearing in the popular list of Current News, it's because the community has made it popular via their activity on the item, not because Andrew has re-positioned it to be there.
Let me know if you have further questions.
