White House boasts: We 'control' news media

Kylsport
Communications chief offers shocking confession to foreign government
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dunn was speaking at a Jan. 12, 2009, event focusing on Obama's media tactics and hosted by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, which seeks to promote collaboration between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. The event was held in Santo Domingo and was attended by the country's president.

Dunn has been facing some criticism since she led a White House campaign last week against Fox News, slamming the top-rated network as an "arm of the Republican Party" and "opinion journalism masquerading as news."

Fox hit back this past Friday, releasing a video of Dunn speaking to high school students last June in which she lists her two "favorite political philosophers," including Communist Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung, whose draconian policies are blamed for the deaths of tens of millions of people.

Look up the definition of "out of context". What she was saying was that they "control" the message of the media, not the actual news outlets themselves. Even though it seems that most of the outlets are on their team, but that's not what this posting is about. Read the actual story.

Well, so snippy! I did read the article and watch the post. I also watched another post where she discussed it. Controlling the message that the media puts out is controlling the media. Semantics!

Didn't mean to sound snippy, I just don't think the headline of the post fits the story. As I said earlier, I don't especially like this woman and am no fan of the president, but I think that there were some very smart moves as far as the way they put their messages out.
I don't think that is especially good for the citizens of the U.S., it controls the information we get, but smart for them winning the office.

    • i could also claim that she delcared "we" "controlled" "youtube" "four years ago," since it's apparently acceptable to quote a single word and then put anything around it to form any sentence we choose to convey a meaning of our choice that does not reflect the truth of the statement made from which the word was clipped.

from the video: "... a huge part of our press strategy was focused on making the media cover what obama was actually saying... we controlled it, as opposed to the press controlled it... we went to as much live television as possible so it couldn't be edited when it came to him, so he could speak longer than a 12-second sound byte... so that what the voters heard, we determined, as opposed to some editor in a TV station..."

"we controlled it" isn't "we controlled the media," it's "we controlled the message." they wanted their message to reach the voters without being manipulated. of course, anyone could later take those words out of context, but if someone bothers to check their facts, do their research, and listen to the candidate without a bias influenced by a media spin, they would be able to find the full speech in question and judge for themselves without media manipulation. taking out the "middle media man" so to speak. heck, even the title given to the linked video is a misrepresentation of her words. it would be more accurately titled "obama's campaign didn't want 'some editor in a TV station' putting a spin on their message." it's easier to cause damage than it is to repair it.

will a candidate's message be biased? likely! they want to make themselves look good. they want your vote. i'm saying, i don't think there's anything wrong with them speaking directly to the people, live or on youtube videos or whatever, as opposed to going through a reporter who can edit their words. i'd say this no matter who's campaign or political career was in question, in case you were wondering.

further in the video: "... the extraordinary power of technology simply means that the premium for what ben(?) calls 'authenticity' but i might just call 'being honest' is much higher than it used to be. that what people could get away with even, four years ago? just isn't gonna happen."

    • I want to know why they are giving advice to other nations on how to develop a state controlled media. This administration said it was not going to do any nation building, yet they disapprove of whom the people in Afghanistan and Honduras have elected. They sent James Carville (a democratic political strategist from the Clinton era) to help out the campaign of the opponent to Karzhai. They also disapprove of the outsting of the socialist leader Zelaya in Honduras. They should take their own advice and stay out of other nation's business.

    • They control the media. The state run media.....ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, NOT FOX NEWS. That is why idiots like axlerod do their best to discredit FOX NEWS by saying they are not really a news org. Well maybe in the eyes on the WH they arent because they dont promote the agenda put out by the WH. It must really piss off obama, pelosi and the rest of the mob that runs the mobocracy under which we live to no end. They do everything in their power to dissuade folks from watching it and in the end it only gives them more PR and the number of viewers increases. The rest of the country, other than the people who are here on current, are waking up to what obama is really about and its starting to scare them. If folks could "recall" their vote, obama would lose big time.

Really? How can you actually defend Fox News? Dont get me wrong the other 24 hour news stations suck too but Fox is by far the worst of the worst when it comes to journalistic integrity.

"The rest of the country, other than the people who are here on current, are waking up to what obama is really about and its starting to scare them."

I would bet all my savings that the average IQ of people here on current is probably a great deal higher than the national average. Hence people on current HATE Fox News. Only idiots take what Fox News says without a grain of salt.

Your opinion is that the left leaning stations are crap but the right leaning station is somehow better or more reliable. If you really think those other stations are "state run" then maybe you should take a look at your own bias.

Its not that they are doing something right its that they are doing something wrong! They use inflammatory headlines and accusations not backed up by fact to get the Republican base riled up in order to get HIGHER RATINGS. That is why the left is so vehemently opposed to Fox News.

@fun-size,, I watch a lot of Fox channel, and MSNBC, as well as read or at least cruse headlines on a couple of national news papers, and blogs. You really have to look at both sides to get a reliable picture of what's going on. ALL news outlets have a bias or a lean on not only the story they give but the way they tell it.

I think the other problem is people confusing the actual "news segments" and the "commentators". Big different. If you watch Olberman, Ed Show, or even Chris Matthews, and called it the news on MSNBC, yes they are in Obamas pocket. The same as confusing Hannity or Beck with the actual news on Fox.

But it wasn't that long ago that it was a badge of pride by media types to have the President or the White House pissed at them, it was a sign they were doing their job. I really think (hope) this lockout by the WH has a huge chance of backfiring on the WH. Remember when Daniel Shorr was on the same kind of list from Nixon?

Excuse me, they are not just doing it to avoid reporters questions, but so that they are not caught saying what a majority of Americans would greatly disapprove. Take for instance, the person with the camera/video phone that recorded his conversation with a group of commies in SFO regarding the tradition of people in America or when he was confronted by Joe Wurzelbacher.

A majority of Americans are not ignorant as to why this administration is doing; an attempt to pull off what Huge Chavez has done to the Venezuelan media that opposed him. Thanks to technology, politicians now are accountable to what they say whereever and not just when they are talking to a reporter.

    • This bunch in the white house has been conversing with their friends over in Hide Park for so long. They have no idea how much Americans reject the ideas of people like Chairman Mao and Castro, Bill Ayres and the like. They actually think we do not care, or know or paying attention to how many people who are actual committed Commies or far left socialist have the Ear of the leader of the free World. ...We know now...and yes we give a shit...many of our Fathers died fighting the beliefs of commie bastards like those. I am sure most Americans would not supported Obama if the “Change “was spelled out to mean switching over to Communism. We have seen video of this woman telling our Children that Mao was a great thinker...Were Pissed. We’re going to our Schools and demanding that these ideas that are being fed and indocratining our children to have them all turn in to little socialist who idolize Mao and Lesson plans wrote by Ayres instead of Washington and Castro instead of Lincoln. This is going to stop....Are you paying attention? One way or another this SHIT is going to end! You don’t get our Fucking kids heads and fill them with the teachings of Bill Ayres. W will tear down the leftist school of Reeducation Brick by Fucking Brick. And re Build it again the American way with Capitalist Teachers who are proud to be an American and teach our young that the system we have had for the last 200 years is the best there has ever been in the history of the World period. We are done with you filling our young with ideas from failed ideology’s that only work in the Brain of some Terrorists like Bill Ayres on a hit of Acid!

    • I don't particularly like this woman, I've seen the video with her comments about Fox News, and the Mao quote, however in this instance I think the part about controlling the media, means more about controlling the message more than the actual media. The part about having live messages from Obama so they can't take things out of context is really pretty shrewd politics.

Yet another example of how they out smarted the Republicans in '08. They had a smarter more streamlined package and message, as well as control of the message.

Of course most of it was presented to appeal to their base, and they do indeed have the main stream media in their pockets, and that never hurts your cause.
