Obama's marijuana policy - What's next?

"The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday."
This is a much different tact than the Bush Administration, which carried out federal raids over the protests of state and local officials.
As more states relax their laws around medical marijuana and dispensaries like California's become more common - should we anticipate a shift in federal law that follows this trend? Or will marijuana legalization prove to still be too divisive of a national issue to tackle during Obama's term?

YES! YES! YES!
Its being recognized..thats all its take. Recognition at a national level. Next is legalization for everyone. Or everyone is going to get a license and it'll be like the same thing. !!!! This excites me! - 2 years ago

If cannabis is great for several ailments then it's criminal not to let sick people use it legally. Come on.
Depressed people self medicate with alcohol.
People are so much nicer after some THC. Alcohol causes anger, weed makes you feel good toward others.
Hemp is also a valuable fiber resource. It's natural, biodegradable and great for clothing!
Makes nice fabrics. - 2 years ago

Obama is simply trying to deflect from his failed health care bill by putting this out there. He is not serious about marijuana reform or he would declare the criminalization of drugs as unconstitutional.
Just last week Obama's DEA cronies were raiding California pot shops. And now they had a sudden change of heart.

There are many people making billions on government spending on the war on drugs. Lots of private contractors who were ex-military industrial types sucking up our tax dollars.
And big pharma does not want a cheap medicine for glaucoma and insominia or nausea from illness or chemo. And it could be taxed from farm to point of sale. MArginal land farmers could grow it for a cash crop. It provides durable biodegradable FIBER for clothes and other needs.

it is inevitable at this point. people use marijuana as recreational as they use alcohol and cigarettes...
there are no death reported from overdose
there are many doctors that see medical benefits for it
there are many industrial uses for hemp.obama is a smart guy.
and will see how history repeats it self.prohibition didnt work with booze... why would it work with bud?
not to mention a huge loss in power for drug lords in mexico and a huge reduction in spending on part of the feds.
just wait, and for activists like us... dont stop yelling.

Sorry gay rights activists, try again when people aren't worrying about a boy's life rather than the rights of millions of people.
Also, to throw in my opinion on the marijuana issue:
I never used weed myself, nor will I ever see myself using it in the future, but if it's going to benefit people's health, then I would want them to use marijuana if their lives can be saved somehow... I see no reason why it should be otherwise...

And just where do you expect to get all the seed to start all this farming? Just kidding. I wish they would do something to get things moving I like Hemp products but right now the prices are so wrong on them. I would love to get a set of Hemp sheets for the bed but I'm not going to pay the price they want over a hundred bucks for them.

actually, I think that should be expanded to drug-related reform. The war on drugs is actually a war on drug users.
A year in prison costs much more than six months in rehab. Americans addicted to drugs are treated like criminals rather than people who need help.

This "might" become a bad thing.
Much like the healthcare debate, Republicans feel they MUST oppose everyhting he says/does.
So in the event that a republican takes office. They'll reverse the policy simply because it's Obama's issue.
And the reversal could put us in a worse postition than before.
