Children denounced as witches are tortured, killed

Image
hpseaton
Here we are in 2009 and there are still people, worldwide, who actually think the Bible offers advice for modern life. This is but one example....

Nigeria is at the center of an increasing number of cases in which children accused of witchcraft are then tortured or killed.

Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" that The Associated Press reviewed, and 13 churches were named in the case files.
Click here to find out more!

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises, whose parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

The head of the nonprofit group Stepping Stones Nigeria calls it an outrage that the practice is allowed to take place in the name of Christianity.

A spokesman for the United Nation's Children's Fund says the accusations are fueled by poverty, poor education and triggered by the death of a relative, the loss of a job or the denunciation of a pastor on the make.

There have been thousands of cases over the past decade, and in the past month alone, three Nigerian children accused of witchcraft were killed and another three were set on fire.

comit aduterly dont lie, steal, curse or participate in witchcraft or be gay .. what i dont understand is why being a witch or wiccan or gay is so much worst .. the bible donest have a scale of whats the worst sin so how come being gay or a witch so much worster then lieing stealing or murder doesnt make sence donest it?? but do know what is in the commandments ,to steal ,muder and lie...nd everybody has sin ..being gay and being a witch was just 'mentioned" in the bible think of that

    • obviously it is a terrible thing to be happening but has anyone asked why... there must be a reason why only some of the children are targeted and not other no matter which religion or philosophy stands behind it. this article certainly does not get to the bottom of the problem and instead promotes some outraged responses and simplistic arguments about Christianity.

    • This is the sickest thing I have heard of in a while. They claim to be doing this behind chrisitanity. That's another reasone why it sicken's me, even more. I will never understand reasons why adults come up with some of this stuff?

    • Killing inocent children IS NOT CHRISTIAN!
It is not an act of God.
These people must cease and desist. Where are the authorities in this country? Who is in charge?
God forbid it be these children killers.

    • I love how everyone is blaming god and christians for this but i have to say just because someone says they are doing it in the name of god doesnt mean thatgod or many other chrisitans want it tot happen in many times strong and influencable people used god as there way to gather people to their cause picking on the weak and confused to help them. Im not against christanity in fact im a strong believer but I just had to point it out and heres some examples crusades- people were sick dieing confused and knew very little about muslims so they invaded (the majority of bibles were in latin so a majority of the public couldnt even read the bible to make a eduacated choice about what the pope said) Same thing is happening here Same thing happened in germany in the 30's they were poor hungry starving and hitler told them that he was killing the jews in athe name of god and one more thing Judism , christanity , muslim is all the same religion they all believe in the same god so why do they fight.

    • This is a strong proof that history repeats itself, ignorance is the worse of evils, people need to know the history behind them (humanity in general) in order to move forward.

Personally, i dont blame christianity or religion for things like this, because people can use any excuse to be cruel at each other, so is more about education than about religion.

It is happening in America via the left. They are on a witch hunt for anyone against what they deem a great idea just because the left created it....health care reform.

OH no you don't want that? You must hate people being healthy.

      Oh really witch hunter?

See....religion doesn't have to be part of the equation to be a witch hunter. Don't limit your thinking.

Wait...maybe it was 80% wrong and 20% right. Damn, now I have to go and do some fact checking...

Everyone is part of a group.

Stating you're not part of a religion puts you in a group of people that agree with that line of thinking.

Just like labels. Everyone is labeled. Don't wanna be? Just did it yourself by labeling yourself someone that doesn't want to be label. Guess how many agree with that? BOOM labeled.

Okay...so the Bible says witches can't be children? Do you agree that the Bible says witches should be killed? So then people who read the bible might say 'well, the bible doesn't say children can't be witches'. And we've seen these types of actions regarding the Bible, or any holy book for that matter, for a very long time. It's all how you parse the Bible.

So now go ahead and explain to me how I'm deluded once more.

You posted an article that didn't quote the scripture and you assumed the article to be accurate without looking it up yourself.

      I'm questioning your judgment.

Don't tell me about the scripture you had no idea existed other than being told. Guess you need someone to do your thinking for you.

      I asked a question.

      Don't know the answer...say so.

      Sorceress.

it would only be translated to witch if the language cannot handle a different term.

Why use witch? Because that is a simpler term to control people's fears.

This isn't just the ooh look at me I'm making potions. This is the Ooh look at me I can tell the future with entrails. Do not African areas have people who do that in their tribes? Or Witch Doctors? They would have been done away with in Israel as well.

It wouldn't just be females. Just because the Bible stated one sex over another in certain areas it always (via proof on how they handled the law) pertained to both sexes.

So if they were to really follow what the Bible said they'd kill little boys too.

But since they are only doing what they want. They are doing...well...what they want not what the Bible says.

Thank you for actually sharing the scripture. Unlike the article and the original poster...it is appreciated.

Thousands of Nigerian children have been beaten and killed because of ignorance and superstition. All you can say is that these articles are actually written with anti-religious motives?

Samurai I suppose I should have said 'these are my personal comments' and then did the first line. I apologize as several people seem to be confused as to why it read that way. Live and learn.

But in answer to your question: Yes, emphatically. I'm always ready to show how 'bad' religion is, all religions. But one of the reasons I like current.com is because different people can weigh in and no matter if I agree, or disagree, I usually come away a little wiser.

Once again, I apologize for the opening lines and I'll try not to add that 'personal touch' again.

This is Africa you doofus! Christianity there is highly influenced by the indigenous cultures and religions. Part of that is a very strong, long history of believing in sorcery. Christianity is incidental to that. The REAL problem is lack of education in those rural areas ;)

    • Even in this situation, Christianity is nothing more than an excuse. An earlier article I read about this gave more insight (sorry, I can't find it).

These children are called witches and killed or banished because they are one more mouth to feed for their extended family or community. They are accused of being witches because their family member suddenly died or became seriously ill (this is supposedly a sign of being a witch) and so the child is now dependent on the community to survive. But in such cases of extreme poverty, no one wants to have another mouth to feed so it is easier to do away with the child by calling him/her a witch.

Perhaps this situation has snowballed from "just a (horrifying) excuse of getting rid of a financial burden" to persecuting many more children. Either way, it needs to stop.

    • I'm getting pretty tired of ignorant people making crazy stuff like this a representation for Christianity as a whole. Crazy, murdering interpreters of the Bible do not make up for all christians. If the Bible says to literally kill witches, then what about the sixth commandment: "Thou shalt not kill"?

    • crkelley:

Okay Crkelley..I'll go one better: If one of the Commandments is 'Thou Shall Not Kill' then why, shortly afterwards does God have Moses kill a couple of thousand Israelites for worshiping an idol while Moses was up gathering the stone tablets?

Or why does God have the Israelites kill all the men, women and children of the tribes surrounding the Holy Land?

The Bible is what it is. Christianity, modern Christianity, tends to gloss over those parts that don't agree with its message.

      Go right ahead.

But you won't find where Moses killed after he came down from the mountain with the ten commandments. It was the earth that opened up and swallowed them.
EDIT: I am sorry I was thinking of another time. The earth did not open up. Based on how you answer things it is understandable that you would think it was Moses that did anything.

Everything Moses did (aside from a few things) was done because that was what God wanted. So if you're going to blame someone for anyone's death it would be God because he commanded it and Moses followed orders.

And the rest of what I said correlates with this....
Again sorry. I was thinking of something else. Which is why I state that I am not right on this and can only relate.

God created humans. Therefore he has the ability to see into their hearts and know if they want to change or will continue to persists in their bad behavior. Deciding to kill someone isn't done just out of the blue. It's done because they are not going to change because they don't want to and the heart doesn't lie when it's read by him.

You may not believe in God but he's not weak and ignorant. He's smarter than you and me and all 7 billion people on this planet. He's seen it all. There's nothing new now that humans had not done 1,000s of years ago.

Whatever you're going to show me may make you feel right about what was done, but you won't be right and that's not because I think I'm right. I am not the one that is right. I'll just be the one telling you you're wrong and why. And in no way be saying I'm right. Because it's not a matter of me being right because it's not me doing anything but telling the truth.

I can only relate what I know to be fact.

Whether or not someone believes doesn't matter. A fact is a fact even if the whole world tells me I'm wrong on THIS...it won't change how right it is.

The thing I think that people forget is the bible was not dictated from God to a person. They are writings created by people. Compiled over hundreds of years. Trimmed and rearranged and edited throughout history.

Blame the people. They have a severe lacking of common sense.

Do we allow people to kill when they point to the sky and say God made me do it? No.

    • this honestly has nothing to do with the bible. the whole religion is not to blame, men are. no where in the bible does it make reference to real witches and it surely would not promote killing them. Especially children of all people. These people are interpreting the bible and forming their own reality but it is not truth. I find it sad that something like this could still be happening. It seems like lately history is constantly repeating itself.

Certain actions like this, vile actions based on faith, make me believe we're in a decline of civilization. Pile this and similar religious extremism on top of war, prejudice, pollution, mega-greed, general intolerance and every other negative attribute that humans shoulda forgotten by now,... and one would determine that humans are regressing as a culture and a species.
How hard, in reality, is it to coexist as neighbors? How hard is it to realize certain factors that could induce unity? Are we that stupid as a species? Are we that greedy, self-centered and angry? Witches??? Wizards???
Human nature itself is our bane. Our reluctance to think of ourselves NOT as the point of ALL existence is destroying us. And one day, the Earth will say "Good riddance!" to ta certain lowly, relatively short-lived, violent creature that self-destructed.

    • Horrible. I believe in the words of Christ and I denounce this behavior wholeheartedly. It is unfortunate that some people who wear the name Christian seek to warp the basic tenets of Christianity. This is no different than what happened right here in Salem Massachusetts in the 1600s and in the Middle Ages in Europe when the hierarchy burned outspoken women at the stake accusing them of witchcraft. Sheer ignorance and intolerance that should not be tolerated. However, it appears that all religions have those in them who still live in the 12th Century, and I think this is more of a condemnation of that ignorance and intolerance than on Christianity as a whole.

Those who truly believe in the words of Christ (the actual words hidden in the Gnostic Gospels and not those allowed to be printed in the New Testament) must stand up to denounce such behavior and also denounce those who only use these events to fan the flames of their own intolerance towards an entire group of people.

@Doug & Nettle, you also miss the fact that many words had a different definition at that time and that modern day people are trying to define it in their own way.
EVEN more so, the bible that we read is only a translation of what the original was and in that there are MANY flaws. In many cases it was translated to pander to the Catholic church of that time.

The Bible does have possible or even obvious flaws. Just trying to enlighten your mind.

People have always been killed and persecuted in the name of God throughout history and FAR more evil has been done in the name of God than for any other reason. We as a supposedly civilized people should be strongly denouncing all those who use religion to spread their evil. It has been proven time and time again throughout history that when religion has political power that more evil is done to the common people than at Any other time. Religion itself is not usually inherently evil. It is those in religious power that use their religion as an excuse to spread their evil. When will common sense prevail and these pseudo-religious con artists be removed from positions of power?

Or because I think religions are jokes I shouldn't dare to post articles that paint them in a less then positive light?

In any case though, I don't believe in killing anything unless you plan to eat it! & eating humans doesn't bode well with me ! Here's a little something to ponder! If some one is against Christian beliefs & the idea of Christ, doesn't that kinda mean they are Anti Christ? Most things religion related are full of lies & deceptions! The church alters people's ways of thinking & as a result you end up with these groups of people that are pretty much zombies!

It is getting absolutely ridiculous because although this situation is exponentially more important than local problems I am part of, they still relate and I see it constantly. The thing is, I think what's happening is that the world is becoming less Christian, and the Christians aren't liking it. They don't want to tolerate, they want to save. And that happens in the best cases.

But you have to understand that more often than not if they cannot save then they forsake, they brand them sinner and tell them to go to hell. i'm not saying all do this but it happens and i have witnessed it with my own eyes. the ideals of christianity are well meaning but they fail to realize they must also educate if they are to save someone. They must be truthful up front about the church's past good and bad... and further explain that the book is not scripture but guidlines to do with as you see fit...

    • i take offense to the beginning lines of this article - "Here we are in 2009 and there are still people, worldwide, who actually think the Bible offers advice for modern life."

the bible offers great advice on living in all ages. though some of it is antiquated, do not be so quick to judge. it is obvious to me that the writer of this article has never read the bible in its entirety.

i do not consider myself christian, but i have gained many life lessons from reading the bible. you should do the same. do not paint the entire collection of books with one stroke. there is MUCH wisdom to be gleaned from reading this literary treasure

brob...I have read the bible numerous times and those opening lines were mine, and I stand by them.

You go ahead and list all the 'good' moral lessons in the bible and I will list a 'bad' moral one for each. I am positive that you will run out of good ones long before I run out of bad ones.

I think there are great moral ideas to learn from Shakespeare's works, but I wouldn't go using his ideas to perform medical examinations or scientific analysis. The bible, if treated as just a book, is fine and dandy. But I think we all know that it can never be just that for the majority of people.

    • All of your comments are prejudice, hateful and arrogant. Nowhere in scripture does it say to do the things these perverse religious people are doing. This is not a representation of true Christianity. Give it long enough and man will pervert anything to serve his own agenda. I am proud to call Jesus my savior because his heart breaks just as yours- more so for these people and us all. We should all be a little more careful with our words.

He missed a LOT of parts.

I appreciate what you're trying to do Bigs, which is take only the parts of the Bible that you agree with and build a philosophy out of it. Although you probably won't admit that's what you're doing, because you're in denial about some of the contents of your "scripture". But really, that's what everyone should be doing, and if they're wise they'll use more than one source.

@Doug & Nettle, you also miss the fact that many words had a different definition at that time and that modern day people are trying to define it in their own way.
EVEN more so, the bible that we read is only a translation of what the original was and in that there are MANY flaws. It many cases it was translated to pander to the Catholic church of that time.

The Bible does have possible or even obvious flaws. Just trying to enlighten your mind.

Completely correct. The Bible has been translated over and over and there are probably many, many incorrect statements in the book, but do you really think the ones adhering to the 'burn the witch' mantra are really going to listen to that kind of reason? Nope.
