David Cameron sparked Tory fury by announcing he will impose all-women shortlists on constituencies selecting General Election candidates.

In a major U-turn, the Tory leader said he will force some local parties to choose a woman candidate if their MP stands down in the next few months.

The initiative was seen by some at Westminster as a cynical attempt by Mr. Cameron to burnish his image as a reformer, following weeks in which he has embraced a more traditional Tory message.

But he insisted the policy change was needed to increase the number of female Tory MPs, currently just 19 out of 195.

He said the lack of women and ethnic minority MPs was damaging for Parliament, adding: 'It's been an even greater problem for my party and one I desperately want to address and have tried to address.'

The move provoked an immediate backlash. Former Tory minister Ann Widdecombe described all-women shortlists as 'an insult to women'.

She said: 'It will do women no good at all. Every woman in parliament should be able to look every man in the eye and know she got there on exactly the same basis.

We couldn't agree more.

    • Thank you 'mad sam' for illustrating my point so well.

Sexist bigots don't hire women because we 'use our hearts', take less risky and more ethical business decisions.

As an employer, soldier, scout leader you may see that things in our way of life aren't perfect. Take a look at the bigger picture and ask yourself 'if a woman approached this situation with her heart would we be in this mess?'.

I can't be bothered to address your silly and petty remarks about women, work and being a good parent, I'd rather watch paint dry. You're wrong. Simple.

I'm not saying we are perfect, but you lot aren't making the best job of things. Move over and let the women have a crack at it. We should be working together not against each other.

For more info on how to educate your out of date self please see:

2007 Catalyst study, The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance & Women's Representation on Boards; which found that the group of companies with the highest representation of women on their top management teams performed BETTER financially than the group with the lowest female representation.

Just because men don't oft employ their 'hearts' in business/politics does not mean that it is not beneficial to do so.

    • This makes so little sense I can only assume you're attempting to troll.

Don't bother, your points are vacuous, ill considered and verging on illiterate. Spell check friend please.

I wont bother with a retort to your nonsense, I'm assuming you're attempting to get a rise with your illogical BS, however I'd like to address your point on Lynne Featherstone as she is my local councillor. She does a good job. She always replies to the letters I've sent.
If I was her child, I'd be proud of her for leading by example.

    • females and politics do not mix, look at Magi Thacher, there have been lots more incidents after this, like the female mp for somerset who voted in for of the ban on hunting when over 80% of her constants were in objection of the ban, there are also of mother hood in conflikt,
" When there is a clash between the school play and election day as there was on one occasion, the former loses out and you have to harden your heart"

      Lynne Featherstone
      Liberal Democrat MP

females play a good part in politics....they keep the male husbands happy in bed. that is the only time they should be in politics.

and as for the equal right, im sick of the it not being fair, i run my own business and i was forced to higher 5 female members of staff evan thow they were less experienced, less qualified and less suitable for the job purely to reach equality targets.

    • I think Ann Widdicome saying she can look a man in the eye because 'she has met them on equal terms' demonstrates that she has a lack of grasp of the situation.

She has been an exceptional female politician to get so far there is no doubt.

This is about making the playing field level however; men have an unfair advantage, women should not have to be ten times better then their male counterparts to get into parliament.

It is all very well saying 'a woman should be picked for her own merits' but women are not being picked for their own merits as positions of power are obtained by old boy old school methods.

This is about breaking the cycle of the country being run by solely upper class Etonian types, you can't expect these things to change without a big shove.

If I have daughters, maybe they will be able to compete on level ground with men in work and politics. Unless equality is guided there will be no change for generations and the glass ceiling will remain intact.

Values take decades to become ingrained, if these things happened by themselves there never would have been a need for anti segregation laws in the US.
Just because men and women in the UK tend to see each other as equal does not mean that we have equal chances.

      Support mandatory female short-lists!

Check out how Norway are tackling a similar issue:
      http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/mar/06/women.discriminationatwork

"Men need to be trained to look to the other 50% of the population." I wholeheartedly agree with that statement.

    • Okay is it just me or does it actually matter what sex/race/religion/sexuality/disablilty our political representatives are what really matters is that they can perform the job they are in, in a fair manner that supports not hinders the country they represent!!!

    • Okay guys. Forget all that has gone before, and look at this logically. More women in power, is good for women. Who cares how they got there, if do good there?

This is Empowering Women much, much more than it is Devaluing them. It's one of those necessary evils which could bring about a much more balanced and equal society sooner rather than later.

    • We really didn't need more proof that Cameron is politically useless.

If the conservatives think they need more women and non-caucasian ethnicities, maybe they should address the problems within their party by changing attitudes and ways of thinking, not forcing change people will resent.

    • Yet again this totally devalues women in politics, we shouldn't be there because people are forced to choose one of us, we should be chosen on our own merits from the possible candidates.
