UPS third-quarter profit fell 43%

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- United Parcel Service Inc. /quotes/comstock/13*!ups/quotes/nls/ups (UPS 55.76, +0.06, +0.11%) said Thursday its third-quarter profit fell to $549 million, or 55 cents a share, from $970 million, or 96 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Sales fell to $11.1 billion from $13.1 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of 53 cents a share on sales of $11 billion, on average. For the fourth quarter, the Atlanta shipping giant forecast earnings in the range of 58 cents to 65 cents a share. Wall Street expects a fourth-quarter profit of 64 cents a share, on average. Shares of UPS fell 1% premarket to $56.50. (Corrects net income figures for most recent quarter and year ago.)
