    • Great post! Moskos is not a retired cop. He is a Sociologist whose work is mentioned in Freakonomics. He did do a stint as a Baltimore Police Officer while in his PhD program---but he did not retire. His book is a great eye opening read.

    • Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis has been debated, it does have several well-documented beneficial effects.

Cannabis is indicated for treating and preventing nausea and vomiting, stimulating hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients and for the treatment of glaucoma due to its lowering of intraocular pressure, as well as a non-addictive general analgesic (pain reliever). Other studies have show that CBD (cannabidiol, a cannabinoid in cannabis) can lower the affects or stop schizophrenia. Individual studies also have been conducted indicating cannabis to be beneficial to a gamut of conditions running from multiple sclerosis to depression. Synthesized cannabinoids are also sold as prescription drugs, including Marinol (dronabinol in the United States and Germany) and Cesamet (nabilone in Canada, Mexico, The United States and The United Kingdom).

Currently, the FDA has not approved smoked marijuana for any condition or disease in the United States. Regardless, thirteen states have legalized cannabis for medical use.[50][51] Canada, Spain, The Netherlands and Austria have also legalized cannabis for medicinal use.[52][53]
