The President Says Marijuana is Medicine. Change the Schedule

Image

DESCRIPTION/OVERVIEW

The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). The membranes of certain nerve cells in the brain contain protein receptors that bind to THC. Once securely in place, THC kicks off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the high that users experience when they smoke marijuana.(2)

CONTROL STATUS

Marijuana is a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Schedule I drugs are classified as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.

    • National Conference Praised Cannabis Therapy Potential

In November1975, virtually all of America’s leading researchers on marijuana met at Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, California. Seminars were sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to address a compendium of studies from their earliest to most recent findings.

When the seminars were over, practically all the scientists concluded that the federal government, with the hard evidence collected so far on the therapeutic potential of marijuana, should be rushing to invest tax money into more research.

They felt the taxpayers should be informed that there was every legitimate reason for the field of public health to continue large scale research on cannabis medicine and therapies. All the participants, it seems, believed this. Many of them (such as Mechoulam) believed that cannabis would be one of the world’s major medicines by the mid-1980s. In March 1997, Mechoulam, in a speech at the Bio-Fach in Frankfurt, Germany, still believed that cannabis is the world’s best overall medicine. In 2006 Mechoulam started using cannabis to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

    • You can take most crime, dissect it and find it is caused by the controlled substances act. From the death panels to street crime. All because of the controlled substances act we are enslaved to doctors, pharma companies and pharmacists. I can treat myself. Free the medicine, free the internet for medical knowledge. The colleges don't want that. They want to "Sell" knowledge, which enables the buyers a slavemaster's license.

    • Change comes slowly; sometimes unexpectantly. Texas has no law allowing for the use of medical marijuana. By my choosing to fight a possession charge, a landmark decision was won under a "necessity defense", the first known acquittal of it's kind in this state. My point: perseverance wins the race. Fight the good fight.

    • hunzedog smoke a lot of seeds and stems?;

"A dry, shredded green/brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the plant Cannabis sativa, it usually is smoked as a cigarette (joint, nail), or in a pipe (bong)."

Don't be teaching the newbs that... You'll have some poor kid trying to get high on seeds and stems, and all he'll get is a headache. Counter-productive man, you don't want them all hating "headache weed"...

Remember childrens the flowers are best, followed by leaves... Seeds & stems are only in your bag because they add weight to a skimpy sack, SO DON'T SMOKE THEM....

    • You know, my last statement above maybe has more value than the humor I intended.

Wouldn't you say that the stoners of this country are a major block of business for those companies? Shouldn't we be thinking along the lines of Corporate sponsor? Surely they know which side their toast is buttered on.

      Yup. Feeling my Cheeros today.

    • How many people, I wonder; folks that have nothing to do with cannabis and know nothing of it, would have the slightest clue what the photo is. They'd probably figure it was psychedelic pop art from us hippies. You know, that's not a bad description.....

I'd give long odds the fed isn't going to do this guys. Not on their own hook. The only way we're going to get any redress is to force their hand. That's exactly what's happening now.

The folks in CA have taken the bit in their teeth and they're running with it. We're getting a big assist in creditability from the Medical Marijuana side. That issue has a lot of grass roots support and the states are coming around - slowly; but coming around. It's making the main line news and in those states where the activists are working hard it's getting on the ballot.

What we need is to keep right on supporting the Medical folks - they deserve first call and have it coming anyway. We'll sashay in on their skirt tails.

When the Fed challenges California's positive vote for legalization, and they will, we've got to have lots of help lined up for them in the form of Medical Marijuana states that have been able to put the rhetoric aside and change their laws to deal with the situation as it is.

Sure as I'm sitting here, CA will pass this. Hopefully with Oregon and Mass right on their heels. If
CA wins in court, then we've got a new ball game. But that's not the end of our troubles. Then it becomes a battle with your state. Folks in GA have my sympathy. But don't lose heart. We're making some LONG strides. And don't forget the employees of Frito Lay, Kellogg's and Hostess are depending on us.

    • At times like this I like to ask myself, what would Jesus do?
He would turn all tobacco fields into marijuana fields and get all of our politicians high, plus he would look cool while doing it with his long hair and goatee.

Naw but seriously it is time this plant resurfaces above persecution and becomes a household name for all the good reasons, not the bad.

    • Throughout history marijuana has been used for many uses. The first cars were powered on diesel made from hemp. When pharmaceutical companies grew larger they decided to eliminate competition and marijuana, as well as many other substances, became criminalized. The only true crime was that you weren't paying taxes to the government or profits to Baxter. I believe the textile industry, DuPont, also had something to do with ridding of us this 'devil weed'.

    • hunzedog, I have seen many, many positive stories about cannabis in the NEWS section. I thank goodness for current.com every day. Current.com is one of the few places cannabis hemp supporters can come to share facts and know they have the ability to make it to the front page.

Jack Herer is out of action for the moment and cannabis hemp posts have slowed considerably. I sure do miss the posts from Jack Herer. Jack and his wife Jeannie were a treasure here at current.

Kudos to current.com for the opportunity to post positive cannabis hemp information. I think with the help of current.com many cannabis consumers will come out of the closet and join the conversation. If people came out of the closet, cannabis hemp would be reclassified tomorrow. It's the #1 cash crop in America. Many, many people are unable to speak, due to the challenge of their pee. Drug testing is alive and well in America. Often ones urine determines more than ones abilities.

    • The real reason cannabis hemp is still illegal, but gaining ground. Education! Education! Education!

Cannabis hemp facts were removed from educational material and replaced with names like (other), ie. cotton, flax and other. Ordinary Americans do not know the factual history of cannabis hemp. Real cannabis hemp facts were removed from American history and replaced with 'Reefer Madness'.

Politicians spun disinformation for political gain. Once the 'war on drugs' started, facts were longer a requirement. People were free to state opinions, while not revealing facts, which contradicted their opinions. People in media did not counter the opinion with fact, they just spun the opinion as equal to fact.

CNN was quoting the percentage of Americans who support cannabis legalization. They stated it was almost 50%. That may seem like a relatively low number, but when you count the people who still believe the 'madness' because they have been denied the facts, that 50% would be much higher, if the history of cannabis hemp is openly discussed. The history of cannabis hemp is astounding.

It's not fair to take a vote, before everyone has a change to hear the real history of the plant cannabis hemp. 'Reefer madness' should not be our guide. It's time to have a real discussion and leave the 'madness' behind.

As a matter of fact, in many cases it is. Jack Herer wrote a book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes". I am providing the link for Chapter 6,

      Chapter Six

The Body of Medical Literature on Cannabis Medicine

Our authority here is the ‘Body of Literature,’ starting with ancient materia medicae:

Chinese and Hindu pharmacopoeia and Near Eastern cuneiform tablets, and continuing all the way into this century, including the 1966-76 U.S. renaissance of cannabis studies—some 10,000 separate studies on medicines and effects from the hemp plant.

Comprehensive compendia of these works are designated as the prime sources for this medical chapter, as well as ongoing interviews with many researchers.

      Affordable, Available Herbal Health Care

For more than 3,500 years, cannabis/hemp/marijuana has been, depending on the culture or nation, either the most used or one of the most widely used plants for medicines. This includes: China, India, the Middle and Near East, Africa, and pre-Roman Catholic Europe (prior to 476 A.D.).
      (Continued at link)...

Everything printed in Jack Herer's book is footnoted, providing back-up documentation of facts. Opinions should not circumvent facts. Take a look at Chapter 6 and see how many facts, you did not learn in school, or from MSM. They are willfully spinning opinion and ignoring history.

    • it should be considered a medicine... i mean why not? it's more safe than oxycotton and xanax and those are considered "medicine" by the FDA but yet, hundreds of people die each year due to drug overdose from both drugs but not one case of a marijuana overdose have ever, and i mean ever, been reported.

while I agree with you to some degree, The problem with OCs is they were only approved because the company claimed that the pill system prevented them from being abused.

Since this was clearly totally ineffective, (You'd think they would have at least tried heating them first ) I would argue that instead the argument should be that OCs should be reclassified as schedule 1.

This does not necessarily mean though that marijuana's classification should not be changed, merely that the argument is weak.
