Study Says Hungry Yosemite Bears Prefer Minivans

Here's a word of warning from someone who's seen a rental car or two ripped up in his day. If you find yourself on this side of the Earth, and happen to stop in in Yosemite National Park -- for the love of all that is dear -- put your food, diapers or anything that may remotely carry a scent in the bear bins that are provided. You really have no idea the kind of damage these animals can do to metal until you've seen it.

    • There seems to be a shortage of food to catch in their environment, Polar bears in Alaska were coming into town raiding dumpsters a few years ago, Maybe the park police should talk to the food police and try to hook up some food for them, other than the tourists that visit, and what they bring, maybe the bears are either really smart and really lazy, it's easier to pull apart a secured vehicle, Seems like a lot of work for what little food would be there.

Sorry my friend, but this is not a new phenomenon. I saw it for the first time when I visited Yosemite about 15 years ago. Fact is, bears have the greatest scent of any animal on the face of the planet and the boxes are there for a reason. Like I said in my introduction, it's not hard at all for the bears to rip into a vehicle. Feeding them is also a no-no. Besides being a felony, it's extremely dangerous. If humans start feeing the bears they'll look for food even when a person doesn't have it, and that's bad news for that person. They are wild animals and should not be treated like pets.

Oh, I'd like to add one more note here. If a person's vehicle is broken into, not only are they responsible for the damage but they also receive a hefty fine from the park.
