The raids on Mexican drug cartels and the violence in Rio are just the latest examples of America’s failed drug war. Conor Friedersdorf on why ending prohibition is the only answer.
It isn't quite right to say that America has so far been able to avoid the costs of its War on Drugs. It's increased our murder rate, swelled our prison population, made our streets more violent, heightened corruption among law enforcement, undermined civil liberties, and utterly failed to prevent even the most destitute person desirous of drugs from getting high. (We can't even keep these substances out of our prisons. The idea that we'll ever succeed in keeping them from a free people is ludicrous.)

In the end you know who really cares? We still get to enjoy our smoke, albeit it we are branded criminals. Maybe on some sunny day in the bright future we will be free, let's hope.

With all the gov and public policy interest you would have thought we would have won war on drugs?Take a real look around how many poeple have died as a result of poor control of these substances, how many in overcrowed prisions, how many families wrecked? And the list goes on!!What about when alcohol prohibition was stopped in 30s Violence almost stopped and tax dollars rolled in treasury!

I'm no fan of prohibition, but I'm wondering if there's more to it to this issue than that. There are other developed nations with tougher drug laws than ours, but they have fewer people jailed on drug-related charges and also have lower crime rates.
But then it could be argued that America's War on Drugs only exists for the sake of itself and not really concerned with reducing drug use and abuse.

I must say, I support reclassifying cannabis hemp, but I do not support legalizing all drugs. Families are already overburdened. I don't want to add to their problems, by supporting drug use, which can lead to terrible addiction problems.
I support cannabis, because I feel American policy should not be built on 'madness'. "Reefer Madness" was a movie. "Hemp for Victory" was an American documentary.
