Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Sunday that the Democratic caucus is close to the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster and to pass a HCR bill with a public insurance plan (state opt out version). In addition, the the AP mentions that Obama strongly supports a government run health insurance plan.

    • The "opt out" clause is a trap for the Conservatives. They will jump right into it with both feet. I'd love to see them give their constituancies a public healthcare plan and then try to take it away. I don't think they realize how many middle and lower class people there really are out there and how much this reform will help them live happy, healthy and productive lives. It looks like we could have red states and the blue states will become green states. The utopian Green states will have public healthcare and legalized cannibus.
The Red States will have a cast system of "haves and have nots" with privatized industry and services ruling over the people(cops, prisons, hospitals, schools, etc.) It will be a return to the age of plantation owners and slaves. Mass mirgration might be a part of America's future.

I love it that Obama has one eye on small businesses.

    • Opt out option is great for blue states and death for red. This will allow insurance companies to keep their chain around the necks of individual states as it will be much easier to fight the battle in individual states than on a national level.

It will be interesting to see how many people migrate out of red states in favor of affordable healthcare. Hopefully a lot. This bill has vast potential for dividing America more than it ever has been since the Civil War.

It seems the state legislature & governor would have to pass a law that would opt the state out of the system. Which in moderate states, would be difficult. Also, from one NYTimes reader to the next their editorial on HCR said they doubted any states would opt-out. All of that said, I agree that it could allow the industry to keep its control over more conservative states.
