40 million americans are functionally illiterate [less than a 4th grade reading level]. and im sure that another 40 million are right at that 4th grade reading level. so its no wonder newspapers have shortened articles, used smaller words, reported more on celebrity culture, and are eventually now going out of business. the scene is ripe for television news commentators to take over the once somewhat sacred role of investigative journalism.

Couple that with the embarrassingly short attention span of most of today's adult's.
Thank you internet.
People do not like to read or check the facts. They like the pretty picture's or the most sensational statement.
Beck and his ilk will not be around forever.
But they will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Which is ironic because all of his supporter's whine about corruption in Gov. and this prick is playing them for all they have.morrons............

julian - Ur the one being played by the power grabbing progressives in the govnment, and yet you don't believe anyone should call attention to what they are doing.
We are familiar with the tactics of the progressive to steal power from the people-- it didn't start with obama , its been going on for more than a century -- but he sure is acting as their quarterback and def trying to pull the sneak on us. - 2 years ago

I think you only support Beck because he pisses off liberal's.
Not good.
He is a whore that lies for ratings and money.
You do not know my ideologies so I would appreciate you not judging me.
I do not believe in labels...conservative,liberal, republican democrats.
They are all corrupt and only seem to answer to lobbyist's.
I am starting to feel I have been duped. But I did not arrive at that revelation from that sniffling fucking cry baby con man Beck.

http://current.com/items/91251531_wake-up-america.htm200 plus years of unchecked and corrupt capitalism has done damage that can not be reversed.....
Do you have a solution to the problem?
Beck sure the fuck is not the answer to that solution...
he is doing all harm and no good. - 2 years ago

Monte, It is good to speak truth to power and keep them check but you have to have your facts straight to do it. It's just a galactic waste of time and energy to pull stuff out of the "air" or what have you. Opposing this administration as tit-for-tat opposition of the previous administration is simply not valid, intelligent or helpful in any way shape of form.

Talk about dishonest -- whoopi and barbi plotted ahead of time to make this all about the stupid train ride
They too like you guys were afraid that beck was going to say something that would reflect bad on lord obama.
Hence they ambushed Beck on his characterization of barbi's voice which was a totally meaningless subject to interview glenn beck about.
And just because he said he is a commentator and not a investigative reporter does not mean he doesn't have facts. The so-called investigative reporting on most other media is no different that commenting with their opinions. Anybody remember dan rather? Ever watch keith olderman? The fact that these 2 bitties thought beck was a jounalist shows that liberals don't even bother watching the people they criticize -- then they have the nerve to spout the importance of checking facts. What about the false quotes attributed to rush limbaugh just last week? fact checking --- gimme a break. - 2 years ago

You can't blame Whoopi for his lunacy. Beck flat out lied and got busted - by the "View Chics" what does that tell you about his investigative skills? If he's going to take the time to make shit up about the woman on The View how can anyone take anything he says seriously?
The sad fact his just like a broken clock Beck may eventually be right about something but he's such a running joke at this point NO ONE will believe him.

Those of us who enjoy listening to Glenn Beck and can actually tell the difference between his jokes and his truths are sooooo sorry we're too stupid, in your opinion, to know what's REALLY going on.
Please don't go away. We NEEEEEED you to save us from our own stupidity.

While this is not a surprise, the thing that disturbs me the most is that viewers actually believe whatever comentators say on TV as factual informatio.
If beck and other do not check facts, it should be stated somewhere. All the disturbing protests we saw during the town hall meetings during the summer, reflect how dangerous an ill informed group can be.
I think that, what FOX is doing is immoral and kid of mean, because it manipulates the minds of people who are used to get most of their information from TV.

When I read about paid talking heads like Beck the following conversation from, "Gladiator", always comes to my mind.
"Gracchus: Fear and wonder, a powerful combination.
Falco: You really think people are going to be seduced by that?
Gracchus: I think he knows what Rome is. Rome is the mob. Conjure magic for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the senate, it's the sand of the coliseum. He'll bring them death - and they will love him for it. "this is not limited to Beck either, but some of our elected leaders as well.

Beck is the antithesis of the elected leaders as he is the one asking "what the hell are they doing?.
He doesn't claim to know all, but instead invites daily for elected leaders to call and answer these questions, of course they never do because he is hitting the nail on the head and they simply can't answer the charges.
Instead all they can do is put the marching orders out to the bamasheep "destroy him" -- same thing they did wit joe da plumber and sarah palin.
There is no debating what beck says, if there were then we would see some debating, not the usual "he's an idiot" - 2 years ago

They hate Glenn Beck because he asks the hard questions that nobody else will ask. Part of his schtick is funny, the other part is dead on. That's why he's one of the top pundits of the day.

I gather sam doesn't think I check my facts -- which is funny because the last time I read one of his posts he was ridiculing me for citing a wikipedia article on John McCain that popped up when I Googled McCain's name. Apparently my source material was either too easily gathered or lacked the requisite sophistication to meet sam's exacting standards.
McCain was, as usual, being highly critical of any opinion but his own with respect to the proper course of operations in Afghanistan. He was warning President Obama of dire consequences if Obama did not heed McCain's advice.
My immediate reaction was to question why President Obama should heed McCain's advice over the advice of the hundreds or even thousands of military officers who have far more operational experience in battlefield conditions than does McCain. My recollection was that McCain did not have much in the way of experience in operations that were actually on the battlefield since his plane was shot out from under him very early in his tour, and he spent the rest of Vietnam as either a POW or recovering from that horrifying ordeal.
But I didn't want to state that fact categorically without doing a quick check to make sure I hadn't missed something in his biography that indicated that he had somehow got back onto the battlefield there at the end. So I Googled John McCain and, unsurprisingly, the first article to pop up was his bio from wiki, so I checked the dates and sure enough McCain did not return to battle. He DID distinguish himself as a training supervisor in Florida, but I am not aware of any major conflict on the Florida peninsula at the time.
After that relatively short bit of service, he went on to become a military liaison to Congress before leaving the military and running for Congress himself.
I am not sure why I was supposed to have gone to primary source material just to check a couple of dates, but that is the only sin of this kind to which I can think sam is referring. Perhaps he is right. Perhaps I should have read a couple of primary texts on the guy before rendering an opinion. But putting the matter in perspective, I would be interested to know what percentage of those who comment at Current even bother to read the article behind the headlines let alone do ANY fact-checking before expressing their comments.
For whatever it is worth, I testified before McCain's subcommittee on telecommunications a number of years ago. He and I were among the first people in the room in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. He was on the dais at the front of the room waiting for the other Senators and was flipping through a newspaper. I was sitting at the witness table, silently rehearsing my testimony and trying to anticipate the kinds of questions I might be asked on the challenges of deploying broadband telecom services in remote rural areas and pockets of deep poverty such as the Indian reservations in his state and in mine.
He had finished his paper and was, like me idly watching the C-SPAN people set up their cameras, when, one-by-one, the other Senators entered the room and sat down. Almost without exception, they called out some version of "Good Morning!" to McCain. With only one exception, he failed to answer a single one of them. I think my jaw must have fallen at this because I remember him glancing at me and looking quickly away. I didn't want my opinion of his manners to affect his reaction to my testimony. The one exception was that he did grunt at Ben Nighthorse Campbell when the latter clapped McCain on the shoulder as he said good morning. I almost burst out laughing because it was pretty clear that Campbell had been watching and was determined not to let McCain off the hook. Campbell turned to look at me after the grunt and give me a quick grin.
Draw your own conclusions.
