Racsit Hotel owner tells Hispanic workers to change names

NO NO NO Jose won't work how about john... you look like a john.
This is today latest human rights violations.....
Racism is the new stupid...ignorant..._______(insert insult here)

Excerpt from article:
TAOS, N.M. (AP) -- Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.

The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking Spanish in his presence (he thought they'd be talking about him), and ordered some to Anglicize their names.

No more Martin (Mahr-TEEN). It was plain-old Martin. No more Marcos. Now it would be Mark.

His rules and his firing of several Hispanic employees angered his employees and many in this liberal enclave of 5,000 residents at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, where the most alternative of lifestyles can find a home and where Spanish language, culture and traditions have a long and revered history.

Former workers, their relatives and some town residents picketed across the street from the hotel.

    • Not quite sure how I feel about this. I do understand that it would be better for business BECAUSE of racism for them to change their names. How screwed up is that?

    • I would also bet the hotel had an Hispanic name when he bought it.
Not sure what point I am trying to make.
But it seems to me this guy is coming into an established cultural community and is trying to assert his heritage.

      sound familiar?

"Like what Mexicans try to do when they go into American cities....or in California (more specific) try to alter the house of representatives to represent them even though they are not citizens."

You do know the statement you made makes no sense, right? You're saying illegals or legal immigrants are trying to alter the House of Representatives?

      Wow....

      One of many.....

NOBODY in the House of Representatives has more constituents than Denny Rehberg. With some 900,000 people in his district--which encompasses the whole state of Montana--his population base is almost 50 percent larger than that of the typical House member. To complicate matters further, only Don Young of Alaska represents a larger geographical area. "It's a real balancing act," says Rehberg, a Republican. "I find that there're three sides to every two-sided issue."

It would be a lot easier representing all of these citizens if congressmen actually represented citizens. But they don't, or at least not exclusively. Under the current rules of apportionment, the 435 House seats are divvied up on the basis of the total number of people living in each state--not just citizens, but also noncitizens and even illegal aliens. It's hard to believe: People whose very presence in the United States is against the law are granted formal representation in Washington.

LOL... it still doesn't back up your theory of Mexicans altering the House of Representatives. Denny Rehberg is not going to represent "Mexicans" number one and number two, last time I checked and I'm sure I've seen it myself... this country has illegal Russians, Polish, Asians, Africans and every other group of people from a country here, because of illegal Immigration.

Stop trying to put info out there because you "think" you know something. Or because you read it in the newspaper. Mexicans and Latinos overall are in the spotlight because we don't beg for a dollar like the rest of the illegal bums that are here. The illegals you speak of, are trying to find jobs, work wherever they can and keep their family safe.

      Also, WOW....

by the way JJ, do you travel at all? or do you stay in the basement looking up clueless facts?

I've traveled this country and it's many states and when I do, I seem to find a lot of illegal Asians (India, China and Korean) in many areas. Or are you going to tell me that they are illegal Mexicans (who altered their face to look Asian) as well?

Get out more JJ, maybe then you will see the REAL US of A you speak of.

    • JulianCommongold:

We are discussing THIS country. California is the discussion.

      -----------

emocrats benefit. That's because noncitizen apportionment allows the creation of congressional districts full of people who don't have the right to vote--and Democrats almost always win in these places. Consider California's 31st congressional district, where 41 percent of the inhabitants are non-citizens. Last year, Xavier Becerra--one of the most leftwing members of Congress--carried it by attracting fewer than 55,000 votes, despite its population of 639,000. In many congressional districts, the winner needs two times this level of support. Steve Sailer of UPI crunched the numbers for California's whole delegation: In the eight districts won by Hispanics (all Democrats), an average of 80,000 voters went to the polls. In the other 45 districts, an average of 143,000 turned out--that's 79 percent more.

      -------------------------

Considering California borders Mexico and they have found tunnels to and from California that have been there for years...aside from the fact that there were protest in said state via Hispanic persons in mass....how would one think that the numbers are not boosted by Mexico?

People whose tongue teases the word racist but dare not because they know they are wrong.

Facts speak for themselves. Your offense of how I said it is of no matter. I have not said anything offensive. Mexicans come from Mexico and border states get illegals and their majority come from Mexico. It is a well known fact in the border states. It's ignored fact by those that like to toss around insults like racist.

You need to leave New York and come to the border states and then say there isn't a problem.

You know, ignorance gets me going but you're beyond that. "We are discussing THIS country. California is the discussion. " WTF???? Did i mention Spain? or maybe London? no, maybe Russia??

I guess by me saying that I've traveled this country and by me saying that illegal Asians are more common than Mexicans has nothing to do with your statement??? or maybe I've traveled to other countries and saw illegal immigration there and thought it was the Great US of A.... maybe that's why I said those things...

I know California borders Mexico, because I came through there, but you know what smart ass, I also saw Russians and Chinese cross the border with me that day. Or maybe they found a way to look apart from us "Mexicans"

You're the most clueless person I've ever known. STFU!!

You are trying to broaden the conversation so that you can be right instead of remaining focus. I'm talking about California because that's part of the statement you had a problem with.

You want to discuss who is the MOST in all of America...but that doesn't account for what I am speaking.

      You do try.

But I think it's time for you to get over it and move.

Jammer as usual you are speaking to issues that you are ignorant of, I live in California and have all my life. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, half of my family is Mexican and none , I want you to make this really clear..NONE of them are out of work, or illegal, none have ever taken a dime from the welfare dept. I want you to open your damned eyes next time you see on TV or on the streets how very, very few Mexicans are homeless living on the street. I can tell you this much your attitude towards the ethnicity of my family personifies the the ugly American. You won't cop to it, but the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming that what really is getting under your skin is the changing demographics of the USA and there is not a thing you can do about it. The reign of the descendants of primarily northern European peoples is coming to an end in the USA and my friend you can either accept that fact or be tilting against windmills from this point on. In the southwest , no doubt there are people coming across without papers no question, the same way all those years ago the people from Europe arrived, is that old history, yes no doubt, does it change the fact that throughout history demographics have been altered by one group of people moving into anothers territory..no , not at all, it's what human beings have been doing since the beginning of time. Get over it and move on with your life.

I can't take you seriously when you have to go back in time and use that as justification for anything about today.

As for the rest of what you said---you can't find a single thing that I've posted that is wrong or crass. You can find things you found hurtful because you choose for it to be such..which is why you try to insult me in your post.

I know who I am and who I have in my family and as far as I can see in this thread---my family is the most diverse having almost every ethnicity possible.

I don't have a single track mind of one race like you have the pleasure of being, but nice try in your belittling techniques. They are far better than most---just not good enough nor smart enough.

You're right I can't find a " single " thing wrong because in my opinion it's "all" wrong. You make huge leaps that require an individual to agree with your assessments to validate them...for example you have drawn the conclusion that Xavier Becerra won his district because 41% of his district is non citizens...first of all how do you reach that conclusion? Who's statistics are you using and you made no mention of who his opponent was...there are a myriad of reasons that one person wins over another..I could go on but this post is beginning to bore me to be honest, I've grown quite weary trying to explain the obvious . You seem to live in your own state of reality that is far removed from mine. Good luck with your position , and check the demographics in California in about 10 more years and let me know how it's playing out for your side.

      1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

Looks like what they do when they come here and refuse to speak English.

Just like if an American went to France and demanded people to speak English when they've lived there for over 6 months---refusing to learn French. What would they say? Arrogant American.

I suppose that definition would also apply to the both of you for trying to enforce your thoughts on my race. I'm mixed...and there are, as far as I know, a total of three of us. Totally forcing what you think on my race--especially your hatred you're showing in this thread. Thinking you're smarter and better.

If you're so Righteous about other races coming here and not speaking the language, why don't you go to Brooklyn, NY and tell the Russians the same thing. I am from Chicago. I am.....please no polish jokes.......Polish, German, Italian. Hell of a mix EH...anyways there is a very large group of polish immigrants in and around the chicago area. A large number of them dont speak english. Some are my relatives. I tell them to learn the language. I tell them they need to be able to read and write the language so they can be as successful as possible in their new country. Am I wrong for that? I dont think so. If I can tell my own countrymen to do it. I can tell others to do it to.

I would NEVER tell them to change their names. Hell if any of them were ever told to change their names by an employer, I would suggest to them they get an ATTY and file suit. and if ever I was on a jury in that type of case I would side with the folks that were asked to change their names and I dont care whether they are from Mexico, Poland Russia or any other country you can list.......yes in case your wondering...even if they were from Kenya.

I'm sure by ebonics that Ksyris is referring to, "Speak the language of get the fuck out." I'm sure Ksyris meant to imply that you sound like an uneducated inner city kid with a foul mouth when you said this. However, if you want a more accurate meaning of the word ebonics, you are correct that it has racist undertones.

If you want, read the link on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebonics

Now legally, the point here is that unless these people who were employed by this man are illegal immigrants, he has no legal right to fire them just because they have hispanic names and speak spanish around him. Maybe they choose to speak spanish because it is culturally relevant to them and they want to keep their bilingual skills. Maybe they are talking shit to the guy in a language that he can't understand. If they are legals, and he can prove that they are talking shit about him in spanish, then he legally has the right to fire them. If they are illegals, then he should be more concerned with what kind of fines he might be slapped with.

"What's your name!" yelled the overseer, as he instructed another enslaved African to violently whip Kunta. "Your name is Toby, boy! Say it! Toby" the overseer would yell.

After a grueling and prolonged exchange in which Kunta defiantly denounced the slave name and the resulting viscous lashing, he finally relinquished and whispered, "Toby."

"That scene was hard for us all," said a former cast member, recounting the episode at the Apollo Theatre.

"Something changed on the set that day. There was a clear presence of the ancestors' spirit among us that day and after the director said 'cut' we all stayed in character. It was like we had no choice," she says.

"In the scene, Lou Gossett tended to Kunta after he is whipped and after the director said 'cut', he just went into something that was completely off-script, which was later used in the film. As Gossett remained in the moment of the scene, he said lines that just came to him: "Don't you bother what those white folks say…your name is Kunta…don't you worry…there's going to be another day…"

    • It astounds me that some people in the southwest can't stand to hear a Spanish Tongue.

Its like going to Quebec and hating French.

    • The Portuguese (and I believe the Spanish as well) did the same in the 1500's. The Indians in Latin America had to change their pagan names for Christian names.

      Back to the old days...

Ames--: I want to hear you say your name. Your name is Toby. What's your name?

      Kunta Kinte--: Kunta.

The KKK walk around in goofy ass looking robes. I do not. I prefer the brown shirts and the red arm bands thank you very much.

      Sarcasm BTW.

and as far as racist statements. I would look again at what you wrote to me a few down. THAT IS a racist statement.

    • How the hell is ordering a person to change their name to an English version not racist ? How racist do you have to be to think this is OK ?

It's like the racist moron in Louisiana who refuses to marry interracial couples and says ... "but I'm not racist." WTF was he drunk ? Did he think he was talking to his Klan buddies who'd believe that whopper ?

These people are racists. They try to avoid being called racists because they know damn well the world looks at racists with disgust.

Call them what they are because it is the truth.

Why is that the first time we've heard about that judge? If he's been racist all his life then why did it take this long for him to get into the negative spotlight?

It's not the same as having a different name for people to pronounce.

India does it when they have call services. They change their names so that they sound more American since that is who they are dealing with. Oh no India is racist against their own people's names.

No. They are doing it so that they don't cause confusion on the phone and so they can focus on what is more important....the business and the question that the caller is asking not how to pronounce their name.

Want to keep your name as is? Live where it can be pronounced by those that are around you. Or just quit and work somewhere else.

wow, some people are crazy.. reminds me of my ancestors in nigeria. [im first generation, born and raised in the south. alabama and georgia] when they were being colonized by the british and dutch. they had the choice of death or join the anglican or reform churches.. but i guess if you want to live in your own country, you have to conform. right jammer?

Hasn't anyone noticed that JJ would use another country's policy to make a point. IF i lived in India and someone that is from my race asked me to change my name, for the sake of customer service (because that's why they do it, I should know since I owned a call center in India) I would've have said sure. But if someone of another race, wants me to change my name for the sake of their race, nah... that's racist!! but JJ would never see that... because he would use anything in the WORLD just to make a point.

They work for American companies. They wanted the job, they did what they needed to do to get money for their family. Is that not why they crossed the border? For money?

If culture was that important to them then why did they leave where it's most prevalent?

It doesn't matter. Get over it and move on.

Plain and simple people are afraid that their "losing their america" to the outsiders. Just plain ignorance run a muck. This would never fly if Teyshawn and Demarcus were told they will be going by shawn and marcus if they want to keep their jobs.

    • I visit Taos pretty regularly, it's an artist community for those who haven't been there. Now, knowing the demographics of the area what I would suggest to the workers is to quit, and lets see if this man could staff his hotel with anglo workers. I have a feeling after trying to change the sheets, clean the bathroom, etc etc by himself because thats all the help he would have, (there just are not that many "white" folks that are not artists living there) he would be more agreeable to accepting peoples given names. For God's sake the state is named new MEXICO.... It reminded me a bit like the movie "Roots", where Kinta Kunte was named Toby by his master.
I wonder how the folks on here that seem to think it's no big deal would react if they were required to be called some name like, oh lets see, jammer could be Jacque Auf, Rick could be Rymm Geob...it's small price to pay to be able to keep your job and keep on supporting your family ..right? it's no big deal unless it's your name that you are required to change in order to keep your job.
