Auditors have found numerous faults with construction projects contracted through the US government. The Bureau for Overseas Building Operations published a report documenting the problems in the US Embassy compound. The problems have raised questions about the US ability to shift the focus from peacekeeping to nation building. These sentiments are being echoed by Iraq’s minister of planning, Ali Ghalib Baban who stated that numerous buildings that the US had constructed are unusable because of shoddy construction and building code violations.

These problems could derail the progress the fledgling Iraqi democracy is making, especially if the infrastructure they will be depending on is suspect at best.
