Islamic countries push a global 'blasphemy' law

Remember the Danish "Muhammad cartoons" that set off riots by offended Muslims more than three years ago? The debate pitted freedom of press and speech against notions of freedom from insult of one's religion. It rages still – but now in a forum with international legal implications.

For years, Islamic nations have succeeded in passing "blasphemy" resolutions at the United Nations (in the General Assembly and in its human rights body). The measures call on states to limit religiously offensive language or speech. No one wants their beliefs ridiculed, but the freedom to disagree over faith is what allows for the free practice of religion. The resolutions are misguided, but also only symbolic, because they're nonbinding.

Symbolism no longer satisfies the sponsor of these resolutions – the Organization of the Islamic Council. Under the leadership of Pakistan, the 57-nation OIC wants to give the religious antidefamation idea legal teeth by making it part of an international convention, or legally binding treaty. Members of the UN Human Rights Council are passionately debating that idea in Geneva this week.

    • Let them keep trying. Its only going to create a huge backlash. People will get fed up and then banning of religions will become a reality. Why should we cow tow to any delusional fanatic of any religion? That includes all of them and I mean all of them.

And then they wonder why atheists are hostile? They wonder why we support wars that aren't just; from a human rights point of view, it seems that the undercurrent is to fight the spread of Islamofascists. The same is going to start happening to the Christofascits too.

    • They are a plague akamalal and just as deadly to our way of life as any plague you can imagine! everyone of them is a potential terrorist ready to kill us to push forward their warped agenda, which clearly is world domination, and the extermination of all non believers, they even kill their own people for any infraction of their psychotic laws.we in the west must wake up and realize that the presence of these "people" on our soil constitutes a clear and present danger to our beliefs and way of life and get them out of our countries before they outnumber us and take over! it's no coincidence that they have come in such large numbers into europe and the states.while we are distracted by the violence they have taken over our neighborhoods, and like this neighborhood in denmark they go after the non-believers and make them leave.some of them have run for political office and their "people" have elected them.we are at great risk as a result and those of us that are islamic apologists are as much of an enemy as they are! we must remain vocal always and not bow to political correctness and censorship!

    • Believe whatever you want about god or theology, that's your private right.

I just hope your fervor keep to keep Islam out of the government is as strong as it is for any other religion.

This is not a transcendental battle against a demonstrably false faith because ALL RELIGIONS are demonstrably false or at the very least, reliant on zero evidence.

All religions attempt to extort and control mankind through their institutions and the governments they corrupt.

Islam just tends to be the biggest annoyance right now because of the cultural revolution it underwent and the scriptural justification it has to be bigoted and terrible.

    • Saladin:

Yes Saladin we often don't agree and that is exactly the point - - it is "our private right," and there is no imposition upon us withholding those rights . . . yet.
When it is dictated that our will be subject to others because they are the "authority or majority" and we must comply or die . . . there-in lies the problem . . . and there are far to many "problems" these days.

    • Saladin, throughout the ages religion has often been the opium of the masses and the "salve" that has helped to heal the wounded soul . . . I have no problem with mans quest to explain or justify his existence through theology or existentialism.
I do have a problem however with those who take it upon themselves in the "name" of any religion, faith or creed to impose and force their "will" upon me or mankind justified by their fanaticism.
God, being Omnipotent in my view, does not necessarily "need" man to impose his will through violence. . . righteousness does not employ evil to bear the fruit of goodness IMHO

Have you read the old testament? Just checking... because God has often times TOLD people to imposer their WILL through warfare, in fact he's helped them quite a bit to do this. Now granted, the New Testament changes things, but your belief that God doest not want people to enforce will through violence due to him being omnipotent is still false, he was omnipotent in both testaments.

    • So is all religion akamial, I don't give a shit. If people are too dumb to overcome it and won't listen to reason, then there's nothing you can do to deal with it.

It's when people try to put their dumbass religious beliefs in our government that they can kiss my ass. And on that note, Islamic Fundamentalists can get in line if they think we're bound to respect any idea by law.

    • You are only seeing the tip of the iceberg of the denial by most people (they are unable to wrap their minds around this reality) - - thinking that somehow this Islamic plague will just "fade away", or they just don't understand 'ketman' and what it means and how it is employed to cover the clandestine and nefarious purposes of this evil mental disease disguised as "the religion of peace," when nothing could ever be further from the truth...there is no truth in Islam, Islam is a evil lie that preys upon mankind and enslaves the spirit of all who embrace it.

They have been insidiously moving into all countries. They are quiet at first, follow the law until there are a large number of them so as a majority they force the rules to change to allow them to do as they desire.

    • These guys mean business. If they had their way everyone would have to abide by their religious laws. They're already going after individuals like Ezra Levant.

True, Ricky...these bastards won't be happy until everyone bows down to their 'belief' system and pays it homage they consider appropriate.

Screw them. They OFFENDED me when they got pissed off over some cartoons and when they declared a death sentence on Rushdie.

    • Islam....fearful of literature, fearful of cartoons, fearful of clear thinking. Blind obedience seems to be the watchword.

I will give Islam the same respect I give Scientology, Mormonism, Christianity, etc. you stay out of my life and I'll stay out of your house of worship.

You might also ad extremists in the political arena, both left and right. There seem to be a lot of mindless automotons fueling the political discourse.

I am so tired of this. Why can't these damn Shariaists. If the UN includes this in the Universal Human rights, they have completely betrayed all of us.

This guy is damn straight on this issue. I am a blasphemer and I cherish my right to blaspheme any god or religions because we all know that there is no "invisible man" in the sky.

I completely agree that we deserve an apology from the Islamic leaders behind this campaign.

    • Yes anything muslems are for we in the west must be against! these "people don't even have a sense of humor and if you can't laugh at yourself you are really doomed! I am sick and tired of political correctness which allows them to do things like this while their pals continue to kill innocent people! You want respect? then act like humans and stop the killing and the forcing of people to convert to your worldview and start living in the 21st century not the 14th! stop forcing those who choose to enjoy their lives from suffering as a result of making that choice! give your women the same rights your men enjoy! OH I almost forgot contribute to a better world instead of trying to distroy it! course none of this will ever happen! convert or die! Be afraid everyone! be very afraid!

    • Here is a great rule of thumb...anything that the President of Sudan is for...we should just go against it on principle. Imagine if you could prosecute political dissidents under religious reasons. The Saudi family, the Islamic Courts in Somalia...hell North Korea since Juche is basically just state enforced Confucianism wrap in Stalinism, all could have global sanction by the UN to further oppress their people.
