    • @stupidy Well, stupidy. Look again - this time at her eyes. Just because she cannot make noises (you need air passing over the vocal chords to achieve that) does not mean that she is dead. If you are happy that this is the appropriate way to deal with 'beasts' as you term them, rock on ;)

I do admire your concern for the starving 28 million African people though. So, what stops you from walking your talk? It is very easy to start a petition. Seeing it through is the tough part because you will always find people like you whose cynisism outweighs their compassion.

    • "Hundreds if not thousands of animals are unceremoniously slaughtered in inhumane ways every day in North America" Actually, it's much much worse!!

I just looked up these facts:
"Americans consume a million animals an hour. Every second, 300 living beings are slaughtered for food. There are virtually no local, state or federal laws protecting animals, either throughout their lives or during slaughter. Factory farm managers and employees can treat animals in any way they wish in order to maximize profits, with no regard whatsoever for the suffering involved." THE SAD TRUTH.

This is my #1 reason for being a vegetarian for 22 years. i'm not "perfect" i can't say i'm vegan and i take a nutritional supplement that's derived from shellfish, but i do my best. I am insanely healthy and i'm totally middle aged.

I ask everyone to "give animals a break" just one meal a day! HAVE A CLEAR CONSCIOUS, LIVE LONG, GO VEGGIE!

    • I watched your video, while not ideal family viewing, I saw nothing wrong in it, the beast was dead or unconscious 30 seconds into the film. This to me is acceptable. Ideally it should have been sleeping, before the cutting, but it has to die and people have to eat.

Do you think that the beasts behind the one that just got killed and lifted by its ankles on a conveyor belt don’t realise what is in the post for them in your humane abattoirs? Or do you give them blindfolds and play classical music and a wee gin and tonic to help them on their way?

If you are looking for a cause or bandwagon to jump on, there are 28 Million humans on the verge of starvation in East Africa today who would love you to start a petition for them. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8321575.stm see if you can organise some rain.

I would also like to congratulate South Africa in bringing the World Cup to this beautiful continent and hope it is a wonderful success.

    • Sacrificial death African Style is slow and torturous. There are at least two ways in which an animal can be sent into the hereafter:

      1. Killing a bull with bare hands. Naturally, said bull is lying on its side, feet tethered together while the gathering rips out what they can.
      2. Killing a cow with a knife or something similar. Knife could be sharp or blunt, depending what is available. The cow, like the bull, is lying on her side, feet tethered together. She is not unconscious / stunned / sedated. Somebody hacks his way through the skin at her throat. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaxRE44Erss
for live footage. You need not be vegetarian to find this footage shocking.

Comparing this type of inhumane killing to what happens at an abattoir shows REAL ignorance.

An ePetition was launched 4.5 days ago to oppose this proposed slaughter at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Stop-2010-World-Cup-Animal-Sacrifice. The petition is getting a great deal of international support and will be submitted to the FIFA Executive Committee.

      Sincerely,

    • Whatever. Hundreds if not thousands of animals are unceremoniously slaughtered in inhumane ways every day in North America. If people are going to get up in arms about this, they'd better be vegan or at least vegetarian or they have no right to be on a soapbox.

    • Some of the comments here just prove how the world is full of ignorant people. Slaughtering the animals is prior to having a feast and eating the animals. Just because you buy your beef, pork or chicken from the supermarket does not make you any better just because you don't get to see the animals being butchered (unless your vegetarian!) Congratulations once again to South Africa for being the 1st African country to host the world cup.

    • This is a dumb story, with equally dumb comments.
This is a cultural thing, they are not doing it to hurt the animal, it dies peacefully and quickly, and then they will eat the animal.
Calling a whole continent "Sick pieces of shit", and then doing the same thing yourself at Xmas, weddings, funerals, New Year and Thanksgiving etc says volumes about you and your mentality.
This has nothing at all to do with homelessness, the World Bank or drunk idiot football fans, did you comment on the wrong story?

Beautiful picture of Cape Town .

ofcourse this specific story had nothing to do with the world bank, or drunken football fans, i was merely bringing up something that was totally relevant to south africa and the world cup, I thought thats what posting stories on current was about, creating discussions on the topic and sometimes these discussions go wider whilst still remaining on the main title.
"This is a cultural thing, they are not doing it to hurt the animal, it dies peacefully and quickly, and then they will eat the animal." so if it dies peacefully and quickly would you be willing to die being slaughtered, seeing as it's such an alright way to go? and helps bless a stadium?
btw im a vegetarian so animal abuse in any shape or form is sick in my books.
"Beautiful picture of Cape Town though" please tell me that was sarcasm, there's nothing beautiful about a multi million pound stadium with surrounding shanty towns where people dont have proper access to water and electricity etc.

This Stadium is built on top of an old stadium and part of my old golf club, Cape Metropolitan. There are no Townships anywhere near this area; I am unsure where these homes you are talking about are located. If you look at the picture you will see the stadium is very close to the City Centre. The townships tend to be away from the tourist areas, it is better for business. If anyone lost their home to build this they were well reimbursed. Houses in this part of town are very expensive.
For centuries your ancestors have dealt in cattle, traded cattle, sacrificed cattle, and gave dowry of cattle. It is a way of life. Their culture is based on cattle trading and breeding. The more cattle you have the more powerful you are, it is just the way it is.
When a big event happens, animals are killed, it may not be your (western) way of doing things, but the people are not wrong for doing it.
I understand that a vegetarian could find this distasteful, but these are not vegetarians, there are very few vegetarians in Africa through choice.
I agree with many of your posts and like what you have to say on the whole, but this one I am having trouble with. Sorry.
Finally, I would not like to be killed, thanks for offering all the same.

That other post was a mistake, I am still learning this internet thing, soz

You seem very good for a beginner.
I understand that this may seem very gruesome for a vegetarian. The statement "bless the stadium" may seem very strange or absurd to some of you who live in your 'perfect little worlds' and do not understand other people's culture, especially African culture. Perhaps the way they choose to do some of their traditions may come across as "out of this world" but it is only for good will.

I have never slaughtered an animal for a ritual or a blessing. I eat them. They do not die a ritualistic death. They die as humanely as possible at my farm. Sorry but anyone who kills animals as part of a ritual or a blessing is a sick piece of shit.

    • I dunno how I feel about this, I cant help thinkin that if it is their culture then ok, as long as the sacrifice is quick. Is this sort of ritual any different from decapitating turkeys for christmas? I dunno, maybe cos I'm the daughter of a butcher tho.

    • watched a documentary about how the south african government were kicking people out of their houses with nowhere else to go so they could make room for car parks.
When you have a country that cares so less for human life, it's hard to be shocked by their attitude towards animals.
But hey it's gonna be great because loads of drunk idiot football fans are going over there and put loads of money into the economy which will either go into the hands of the government or go toward their never ending debt to the world bank.
