Now when we need it the most, growing our own food may be against the law and punishable by a fine of up to $1,000,000

    • With the gov. and businesses trying to control the food industry, this could have a huge backlash. More and more people will start going to farmers markets, local farmers, and growing their own. Personally I will leave the country if I can longer buy organic food at the grocery store. This country sucks, it really does.

    • Then they outlaw guns so you can't hunt you own meat, and you're totally dependant on the government for absolutely everything.

    • Even if this only stands for the private sector it means Monsanto will own a copyright on all seeds. Only Monsanto seeds are allowed to be grown or they could get crossed with someone else's is basically what they are saying. Monsanto's seeds are genetically modified and aren't worth wasting your time to eat them. Plus, as is common for the US Government, all laws have a creep factor. They creep their way into other aspects of life and mutant until they no longer resemble the original law after a few years. Like, for instance, the seatbelt law.

    • I read this headline and got all worked up and then decided to go and read the bill. I have a bad habit of getting emotionally involved with issues before actually looking at the facts. This is what I found:

This bill appears to be directed towards the manufacturing sector. I don't see anywhere in the bill itself where there is a reference towards personal use of your own organically grown food.

As you can see below it actually exempts "nonprofit food establishment in which food is prepared for or served directly to the consumer" so that would exclude most farmers markets and smaller operations. (see definition of food establishment below)

      (13) FOOD ESTABLISHMENT-
      (A) IN GENERAL- The term ‘food establishment’ means a slaughterhouse (except those regulated under the Federal Meat Inspection Act or the Poultry Products Inspection Act), factory, warehouse, or facility owned or operated by a person located in any State that processes food or a facility that holds, stores, or transports food or food ingredients.
      (B) EXCLUSIONS- For the purposes of registration, the term ‘food establishment’ does not include a food production facility as defined in paragraph (14), restaurant, other retail food establishment, nonprofit food establishment in which food is prepared for or served directly to the consumer, or fishing vessel (other than a fishing vessel engaged in processing, as that term is defined in section 123.3 of title 21, Code of Federal Regulations).

I looked on the internet and the congresswoman who introduced this bill has a very strong background in helping those less fortunate and appears to be focused on the issue of food safety.

Her husband does not actually work for Monsanto, he is a political scientist who owns a consulting firm that has Monsanto along with many other companies clients. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Greenberg

It is very important that we keep abreast of bills that pertain to further government regulation of anything, especially our food supply, but we need to be careful and look at all of the facts before rushing to judgment. An issue like this can scare people and with all the fear out there already that is the last thing we need as a country.
