    • I received so many silly responses to my first post ever I'm not sure how to respond. Not one of them addressed my question. What are we fighting for? To force our beliefs or our way of life on a country that seems to have no interest in it. Kind of like certain religions forcing their ideas on people at the end of a gun. When will people understand that to show that your way of life is a good way of life to others it MUST be done in a peaceful way or they just won't accept it. The ancient Greeks created the Olympic games as a way for countries to prove themselves to each other without resorting to violence. Wars are only fought for conquest or extermination, things that we claim to take no part in. Wake up America. Your hypocrisy is beginning to shine like the sun.

    • A photo op was "Mission Accomplished", this is respectful for the military families. I agree it shouldn't be used as a political tool during campaigns. But to those who hate obama, is this really disrespectful or opportunist? And would u feel that way if it were someone else you liked? Other administrations refused to allow pictures of caskets returning, that is the disrespect.

    • Manu12:

This is not something he was "supposed to do". Bush never went to Dover so see this first hand. These planes are coming in regularly. If he had wanted to make a photo op of it he could have met one during the day on a Friday and owned the news cycle. He certainly didn't have to give up a whole night's sleep in the most demanding position in the world.

He left alone at 11:30 at night with no media coverage. He spent the entire night there. He spent over 2 hours just talking to families. He returned alone after 4am. You've been shown 1 minute of a 4+ hour night and only because the family has requested you be shown it.

Stop being such a disrespectful P.O.S. Real world decisions are more complicated than you perceive. If he decides to pull out, that too will lead to deaths. Different people will die. These are heavy choices. Obama honors us all by acknowledging their true weight.

Actually he IS supposed to SHOW his respect for the dead soldiers. He is the representation of US.Feeling good about a person for grieving/mourning or paying respects to the dead is stupid all by itself.

    • yeah it's pretty ridiculous to call this a photo op. I'm sure that is what Obama wants, to be assosiated with dead soldiers returning friom a war he did not start. To use this as yet another opportunity to bash the president is an affront to those that have died to protect the innocent.

    • I do not hate many people but Obama can consider himself in that list.

I do have to say even though this was initially a photo-op for the President I think it was something he needed to see and I am glad he went. As with all Presidents they need to visit Dover and also visit with the families to get a true idea of what impact their decisions (or 'dithering') has on a Soldier and a Soldier's family.

Next time do it without cameras as other Presidents have done in the past.

I hope we do not see these pictures reproduced for political capital.

Your first sentence is a lie.

If you hate Obama than you hate many many people. You hate millions of Americans who's personalities and ideals are represented by Obama.

In this country, you are free to be a hateful person. But don't try to come on here and pretend you are not.

I hate him more for his arrogance and naivety than actual positions.

I do not hate people with other oppinions and directions that they would want to lead this country (although I do not agree).

    • I believe to end a war, people need to know what's going on. People need to know how many are dying. US Troops outnumber the Taliban 12-1, time to pull out and start increasing aid for education and energy.

    • Manu12:

      They don't care.

      Example?

There are more people upset over the gang rape of a 15 year old, who didn't die, over the 95 that died in that recent car bomb(?). When a car bomb happens it turns into political fan fair. Who do you blame. Tears? Nah. Why? Because it's over there, it's not over here.

Don't act like numbers will do anything but distance them from those numbers actually meaning human lives. They don't care. It matters not if it's conservative/republican or liberal/democrat or independent. Unless they have someone in the war or are not as politically angry---they will only use the car bomb as a strategic political move. Those deaths do not matter.

    • Manu12:

Another Republican defending gang rape. What's with that?

Seriously though, Jammer, dude, you're making even less sense than normal. How can you complain about the desensitization of people who think about casualties of war as just numbers at the same time that you criticize the President for highlighting the dear cost of lost lives? Can you say partisan hack?

    • J_Jammer: I disagree with you because taking a picture of a casket returning is an image that will stick with people. Let those who bitch about their everyday life realize that families and soldiers are going through hell everyday. We need more pictures. When we don't show people, the deaths are just another statistic. Obama doesn't have to be in any of these photos, but we should know who died over there.

US troops had their worst month in deaths last month in Afghanistan, but the media would rather talk about Ballon Boy. They were having a press conference about Afghanistans mission, an they broke in to report Limbaugh isn't getting a NFL team. Priorities. We need to acknowledge the wars in order to end them.

    • Manu12:

You know how long war has been going on in history? If pictures stop wars then there shouldn't ever been a war after Vietnam. How many more wars occurred after Vietnam that America was in?

People strap bombs to themselves to go out and make a point to "change" the world in their people's favor. Do they not notice that there have been hundreds of people before them that has done the same thing and the world is no more in their favor than before the first person than blew themselves up?

War is dirty. No photo has ever stopped war. No protest has ever stopped a war. The war stops when the government decides to stop it. The people have no control. It's an illusion to think otherwise.

    • I think it's a terrible idea to allow the photos to be taken. Would Obama had gone if there was still a blackout on photos?

Want to show respect? Taking photos isn't it. Neither is video....such a terrible idea and stupid.

    • It cracks me up that people are calling this a "photo op"... Yeah! This is exactly the kind of publicity a US president wants. Maybe he will use it in his next campaign. Pictures of the president with dead soldiers is always good publicity. That sounds just plane stupid to me. The fact is that he makes decisions where lives hang in the balance and he knows that. That he went to see this first hand just shows that he is taking his responsibilities seriously. Maybe if those making the decisions in the past stopped counting their profits long enough to go and see the actual cost of war the US would not be in this situation. No... I guess not... I kind of doubt that...

    • Entering a plane, paying respects, and leaving in the dead of night with one camera filming from a distance away is somehow a photo op??? Sure sounds like one.

It doesn't matter whether you like the President, no one in their right mind can question his sincerity in this. Presidents need to see the results of wars they wage or continue, the troops deserve at least that much respect.

    • "and its 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting 4.... I respect those that go and sympathize with families of those that die, but again I have to ask what are we fighting 4? don't we have more important problems within our own borders to focus on?

    • Really? After other administrations and even Canada not wanting media to photo caskets returning, this is anwelcomed change. Honor those that fought for you, and it should be front page everytime a soldier dies, with their history. Maybe people would think twice of wanting war.

I know you meant welcomes them back, and you must know how hard this is to battle the military industrial complex at this moment in history. It's a hell of a lot more then Bush ever did, don't you think.

Well, when you compare anything to Bush it looks good. So is that the Democratic strategy? If you don't agree with something Obama does you're automaticaly wrong because it is perceived as better than Bush? Amazing how you and others can now turn your eyes away from this unnecessary war that is catering to the military/industrial complex. And I meant what I typed. When are we going to have a president who will welcome our troops home alive? What 's wrong with that?

    • I posted this 17 hrs ago on the first thread to start on the subject. Would be more appropriate here..........

"Please God dont let anybody troll this post. (note Current that i am not accusing anybody of trolling. I know you hate that word.)

I think the man is being sincere here. He knows any decision he makes to send troops to Afghanistan and the deaths there of will way on his shoulder's.
He is showing great respect for our soldier's and it has got to be eating at him to put more in harms way just to finish what Dubya and his cronies started.
Lets be respectful on this one please."

I would also like to point out that I am not an Obama groupie. I never drank "The Kool aid". I do not agree with all of his policies. I did, however, vote for the man because I felt we needed to head in a different direction. I never thought of him as a messiah and thought all the hype surrounding him was ridiculous. He is nothing more than a politician.

I can't think of a better salute to our fallen soldiers that the President saluting them for the highest price that can be paid by a citizen. You assholes had better wake up and maybe join the service to understand what the hell is going on. Your harsh words are words of cowards and I hope you can sleep tonight knowing what an asinine statement you made.

    • I remember during Vietnam they would always show the caskets of the dead soldiers I would really like to know why there was a ban put on it. We should be able to see what war really is.

The ban was put on in 1991 by the first Bush during the first Gulf War.

The media played a kind of dirty trick on Bush. He was shown live laughing with someone at some fundraising event in split screen with live pictures of fallen soldiers being carried off a plane. It looked bad, so he made sure it wouldn't happen again.
