The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reopened Monday, six days after two steel rods and a steel crossbeam plummeted from the span and caused a traffic nightmare for hundreds of thousands of commuters.

A top state official Monday afternoon admitted that more could have been done to prevent last week's accident.
Speaking to reporters after the span reopened, Dale Bonner, secretary of the state Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, said securing the steel assembly to be safe in high winds and other difficult conditions "should have been part of the original design and it wasn't."
Caltrans chief engineer later said that crews would inspect the repaired section every day for at least the next two weeks and will continue to inspect it regularly afterward.
There are 1,680 eyebars on the Bay Bridge. The California Department of Transportation is currently checking all of them.
