Its easy to see how they made this mistake, as a species we still grossly mismanage our natural environment in most parts of the world, and we have a lot more knowledge on the subject than they did.

What you say sounds good on its face, Wetdog, but it is not applicable to this particular situation. The types of trees that the Nazca cut down took hundreds of years and suitable climate conditions to grow in a very harsh and sensitive ecological niche. The Nazca, in a relatively short time span, removed the trees much faster than the trees could be replenished, even if they had planted replacement seedlings. It is simply a sad story of people whose lives were lost because of ignorance, lack of resources, and the vagaries of weather. And since the Nazca are not here to speak for themselves, we can't know what it was like for them.

Progresshiv:
Of coarse it is applicable to the Naszca----it is applicable to everyone everywhere. A similar type of ecological collapse occured on Easter Island,(google it)---and possibly to the Mayans. And many other civilizations.
The Inuit(Eskimos) have been building boats seaworthy enough to cross the arctic ocean and hunt whales from for many centuries. They are called umiaks and kayaks. The Inuit do not have trees today, and never had trees.
The real lesson to be learned is, learn to use all your resources, care for and replenish your resources--------or perish.
A lesson that Western Civilization seems to be ignoring.

The Naszca civilization disappered because they did not plant new trees to replace the ones that they cut down. Not because they cut down trees. If they had planted two trees for each tree they had cut down, we'd have more old growth huarango forest now than they did when they started. And the Naszca might still be around.
